Also lol'd at Mulder's ringtone being the X-Files theme.

I miss Flight of the Conchords... they picked the perfct action or for that "monster" part in this episode.

One of my personal favorite episodes was the "cops" episode... this was very much in that vein.

Not one mention of some nice cleavage?

I thought ep 3 had a lot of Twin Peaks style to it

This may be the funniest ep since Jose Chung, but I'll have to give that one another view in the next couple of days to see how they compare.

Also loved the ringtone, as somebody pointed out.

LOved this episode! Very meta and funny.

Did anyone else notice that Guy was dressed like Darren McGavin/Kolchack the Night Stalker?

S1E06: Shadows

Monster of the Week episode, involving a violent spirit protecting a vulnerable, grieving young woman from shady employer/terrorists.

A slapdash episode, with a messy plot. The strands don't really tie up at all well, and there's not even some exposition from Mulder to give us a possible cause or explanation for the ghostly activity.

Despite this, it does have some cool effects of ghostly, invisible attacks against people that remind you of The Invisible Man or The Entity. But overall, rather messy.

Yes, episode 3 was a great episode. Did anyone notice the guy was the leader of the werewolves in What We Do In The Shadows?

Yep, also the tourism guy in Flight of the Conchords. He's a funny guy, inspired choice.

S1E07: Ghost In The Machine

This episode takes some of the ideas around HAL in 20011: A Space Odyssey and fails to deliver anything memorable or even interesting in this story of a murderous computer. The proclamations from the computer after each death ('file deleted', 'command executed') are eye-rolling. Mulder doesnt even act like Mulder much.

It does have some nice moments - the death of the agent in the falling elevator is tense, and cameras self-focussing have a knack of making the viewer uneasy. The final shot of the computer reactivating is also fun, and evokes the final scenes of the first two Terminator movies.

Yeh Ghost in the Machine is prob. one of the worst X Files episodes.

based on your review of the early forgettable eps, u should skip S1E09 "Space". I can already guarantee u won't like it. Even Chris Carter has admitted it turned out pretty bad.

on the other hand, the next ep "Ice" is considered the ep that really put the X Files on the map. Even though it was an obvious "ripoff" of John Carpenter's The Thing, the production values were movie-quality. Ice demonstrated the X Files was going to be something above the standard syndication-type of quality show that was so prevalent back then.

Yeh, Space is probably the worst episode of them all. It was terrible.

I wonder if anyone genuinely liked it?...

ugh, "Home Alone" was disappointing, easily the worst of the 4 they've shown so far. Too much Scully's mom/brothers drama & Mulder comforting Scully (and leaving mid-investigation while more people get killed lol). The Banksy-themed or whatever MOTW also didn't seem too well thought out and was pretty lame imo.

It might have been the weakest of the series to date for you, but it wasn't anywhere near lame.

Dealing with separation issues and abandonment, specifically of the offspring, was refreshingly humanizing... whether that progeny is a child or a meaningful work of art.

Both live on with a life of their own and are infused with the source influence of the creator.

Space and Ghost in the Machine are indeed easy contenders for any bottom 5 X-Files episode list.

Like most shows, season 1 had a ton of growing pains. Ice and Darkness Falls, Squeeze and Tooms, and a the myth arc stuff were the best to come out of that season. Most of the rest you can just ignore.
