I thought episode 4 of the new season was kind of beautiful and touching.

^agreed. The monster subplot was pretty forgettable with a dumb ending, but this one felt like some of the older episodes. They also seem to be getting more comfortable getting back in their character compared to previous episodes.

X-Files was great last night... a Superb Juxtaposition of love and hate beautifully portrayed by chris carter's writing and extremely poignant with modern societies issues.

I liked last night's ep. I thought Mulder & Scully seemed the most "in character" that they've been all season. Mulder's interactions with Agent Einstein kind of cracked me up as well.

S1E08: Ice

Summary: An Alaskan drilling site, which has collected ice as old as 250,000 years old, suffers a spate of murder and suicide. Mulder and Scully go with a team of scientist to investigate the occurrence, discovering a parasite that precipitates murder and aggression in its host. When one member of the team is murdered, everyone suspects everyone else.

A pure grade A episode, with 1982's The Thing being filltered through the X-Files sensibility to great effect. We see how the fear and lack of sleep precipitate the small party's paranoia, and how the experience affects Mulder and Scullly's relationship. Every single beat of this episode is about perfect.

9/10

Yesterday I finally got caught up with the new season, and I think I like the monster of the week episodes better than the main story arc. The Trashman episode is brilliant. As is the Werelizard ep -- how it turns the trope upside down and sideways, and does it laughing all the way, well, just awesome.

The were human episode was the best of the new series, I'd say.

I just watched the finale, though, and on my holy **** I thought it was terrible. Just an abomination. Like I loved this show, even with the unevenness of the final couple seasons (and my firm belief that it's not really the X-Files without the Mulder/Scully dynamic), and I have a very low threshhold for enjoying pop culture, particularly things I have a soft spot for. I had pretty low expectations for this 10th season but was overall fairly pleased - the first five episodes weren't classics but they weren't terrible, either.

But this last one. JFC. If this is the sort of dreck you're going to produce just stop now. You're killing a franchise and a pair of characters I loved.

yeah, that last one was bad, like didn't know what to do so let's throw **** together and hope it works bad. OTOH, I thought the were human one was a classic.

I really enjoyed the were human episode but I'm not sure it's as good as the ones I'd considered the best of the best.

It was certainly very good and clearly the best of this season. I'm just not sure it's top of the heap X-Files material. It would be the next tier down, though, IMO.

That's fair. It's not as strong as say Squeeze, Ice or Home, but it's as good as say The Post Modern Prometheus, or Josie Chung's From Outer Space.
