My condolences John. With my own parents in their 90's I am dreading this inevitably in my own situation.

My heart goes out to you and your family.

I only tried once. I too survived. I'm too irascible to give it another go. But it couldn't hurt - much.

My condolences JC. My grandfather has Alzheimer's. It's a nightmare to see someone you love disintegrate before your eyes and you know you can't help. I wish you the best.

Thanks, everyone. My children, family, friends, and all of you give me a great deal of support and comfort. I feel quite fortunate.

so those living in portland oregon have found themselves with ice everywhere and roads closed even i84 the main road east to west. ice is two inches around hood river on the road.
oregon gets not much snow and ice so they are ill prepared for it by any means.

next is warming and many inches of rain in the next couple days and high winds. lots of flooding to follow.

appreciating the weather is something to think about as i do a lot. it controls much of our lives and where we decide to live.

I have always been a bit of a weather junkie. But, since moving to the middle of nowhere with significant distance to travel on crappy roads to get anywhere it becomes even more important.

The road I live on (Hwy 212) is a 2 lane Hwy that gets a lot of truck traffic and travels through some country where you have a lot of really bad drivers. In bad weather is really can be scary to go anywhere. I do not worry so much about be getting somewhere or screwing up. It is all the other idiots out there that may collect me in their screwup. Just last week we lost another person in a car vs. Semi accident during a bad snowstorm.

yea fish thats the problem, as good as you can prepare and have the tires and stuff it doesnt do a bit of good against the idiot that swerves into your lane drunk as a skunk.

worst time is after ten o'clock in the evening. last i remember they said over 50% on the road in montana at that time was drunk.

the semi's are scary nowadays. the day of the professional driver is long gone. who knows who the hired.

Semi's are incredibly scary now especially on a 2 lane Hwy. I have seen some incredibly scary/stupid moves made by Semi's over the years and it just keeps getting worse. We had a stretch of time a few years ago when there was a major slide on the main Hwy that wiped out a bit of the road on a very hilly part. They got it open for Cars/Trucks but shut the Hwy down to Semi's for about 9 months. It was wonderful to be honest. The only good thing about having that Semi traffic is that when there is bad weather they keep moving and it helps to burn some of the icy stuff off and blow away snow if it is light.

A couple nights ago I came out of a bar in downtown Providence to find someone had stripped my car of all four wheels. The police came, took the report, and told me that "scumbags" are doing this all over the city. For some reason, I recoiled at the description of the thieves as "scumbags." I guess I just don't have it in my heart these days to think of people as scumbags. It's too easy.

Zeno, I don't need to follow the link. I know the derivation. But I try not to think of it when I do use the word.

True, and I suspected as much. But it is useful to give others the chance to understand the derivation. Thus the link.

Phat Mack with his east coast Coney island whitefish reference left me, the westerner, completely in the dust. That's ok. I'll just gun him down from ambush when he is not suspecting it.

oh the poor under nourished persons needed to steal your tires so they could eat. its so nice of you to think of them in reasonable terms.

scumbags would be the least of my thoughts on what to call them and have done to them if they get caught.
