I think I disagree with The Talking Heads being underrated. I'm certainly an appreciator, but not really a fan. I LOVE maybe 5 of their songs, but I seriously can't stand most of the rest. They have their moments, but overall, I can't listen to them for too long. I'm sure that's a taste issue though. It's like that with The Clash for me as well. Love a small handful of songs from them, and never want to hear any of the others again.

It's also weird, because I'm a firm believer in "In their time they were..." but I can't seem to go there as easily with those two bands.

It's probably safe to say all "blue-eyed soul" bands are under-rated. Just because it's not "supposed" to work. Probably for the same reason Living Colour is under-rated.

Not sure if the band Yes is over, under, or correctly rated. I want to say under based on how good their bassist and keyboardist were but I'm not sure they ever found a level of synergy that matched their individual skills. Really like a lot of their songs though.
ZZ Top's first three albums are way underrated. From number four on-way overrated. The more popular they got the worse they became.

the Velvet Underground is a funny one. Virtually all music critics (and aficionados) at least recognize their brilliance and influence, so much sometimes that they teeter on being overrated. But then you have the casual music fan (even the casual classic rock fan) and most of them haven't heard more than the name (and certainly couldn't come up with Lou Reed).

so I guess that makes them underrated?

agree in a sense (no pun intended). basically the entire setlist of Stop Making Sense is great, with some of my all time favorite songs on there (Heaven, Psycho Killer, This Must be the Place, Once in a Lifetime). but I do agree with you - a lot of their other stuff is just hard to listen to

Underrated:

Kris Kristofferson - legitimate claim for greatest country (real country!) songwriter of all time. he's one of the best lyricists of any genre, period (though his melodies are also incredible). Just massively underrated, especially given the fame that guys like Cash and Willie attained, which is not a dig on either of them

Yo La Tengo - very underrated band with a discography spanning 30 years. their albums range from good to excellent and I hardly hear people ever talking about them

Just saw Mavis doing Funkadelic's "Can You Get To That" on the Daily Show. Both are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and both are still underrated.

The highest they ever got during their initial run on the billboard charts was 171 and my understanding is that it took most critics a decade or more to realize they made amazing music. This is according to Wikipedia on The Velvet Underground & Nico...

The critical world also took little notice of the album. One of the few print reviews of the album in 1967 was a mostly positive review in the second issue of Vibrations, a small rock music magazine. The review described the music as "a full-fledged attack on the ears and on the brain" and took note of the dark subject matter to be found in the majority of the song's lyrics.

It was not until a decade later that the album started to receive almost unanimous praise by numerous rock critics, many of whom made particular note of its influence in modern rock music
Most critics give them a nod nowadays, but afaict, under appreciation haunted the band, despite each well-crafted, pioneering album they churned out (before reed left ldo...lol "Squeeze"), and ultimately brought about its dissolution. I can't agree that they are now almost overrated. It's nigh on impossible imo.

I want to add one here that isn't rock: Nora Jones is massively overrated. Her music is just eye-glazing.

Back to rock: I think one of the most overrated albums of all time was Counting Crows' August and Everything After. I can't believe that album is so well-loved. Every single song, except for Mr Jones, sounds exactly the same (round here, reduxed over and over and over and over), yet it still has a 4.7 on Amazon, won awards, and... Did everyone go insane?

Interestingly, I really do like the music they created afterwards, so I sort of feel like they are under-rated, but then again, that lead singer is a major weirdo.

That is one of my all-time favorite albums. It's mostly due to era, but still.

And Duritz has the best list of celebrity bangs in history. Straight up elite.

Yo La Tengo is likely a victim of the worst band name in the history of American music, which I'm guessing is self-inflicted. I've heard a ton about this band, but it's always, like "Yeah, I don't want to listen to Spanish Cadenzas."

yeah they're from Hoboken, New Jersey, so the name is probably somewhat confusing. they're also big baseball fans: (from wiki, ldo)

They chose the name "Yo La Tengo" (Spanish for "I have it"; or referring to a female-gender object or person, also "I've Got Her") in an effort to avoid any connotations in English. The name came from a baseball anecdote. During the 1962 season, New York Mets center fielder Richie Ashburn and Venezuelan shortstop Elio Chacón found themselves colliding in the outfield. When Ashburn went for a catch, he would scream, "I got it! I got it!" only to run into Chacón, who spoke only Spanish. Ashburn learned to yell, "¡Yo la tengo! ¡Yo la tengo!" instead. In a later game, Ashburn happily saw Chacón backing off. He relaxed, positioned himself to catch the ball, and was instead run over by left fielder Frank Thomas, who understood no Spanish and had missed a team meeting that proposed using the words "¡Yo la tengo!" as a way to avoid outfield collisions. After getting up, Thomas asked Ashburn, "What the hell is a Yellow Tango?".

I was thinking about this a bit and thought Darius Rucker (both with Hootie and the blowfish and as a solo artist) is imo underrated.

I am at work and just found this thread interesting to pass the time. I was never a big NiN fan but I saw them perform live and it was truly an experience Trent reznor is a beast. Better than a lot of acts that sound like crap live you can't take out the live performance aspect. Pearl jam was another band that made that impression.

If you have never heard Steve Vai and dream theatre or Joe Satriani incredible musical talents.

What category are those you listed in?

Especially Vai and Satch. Those, and artists like that, could be an interesting discussion, but there may not be all that many people to participate.

Instrumental.... Santana doesn't have lyrics nor does that flamenco guitar guy. I believe that would be the category.
