Stone Gossard does some great rhythm work for Pearl Jam and has written many of the legendary songs. In the grunge area, also thought James Iha was very good with Smashing Pumpkins.

Iha was more of a melodic/lead guy though. He was pretty great, regardless. The wall of guitars (up to 30 tracks) was all Corgan.

I heard Corgan wrote the bass parts for Darcy Wretzky too.

Darcy was useless. It was an art project at first....

Page does some epic stuff in this extended version.

I like the part around the 6:00 mark where JPJ and Bonham are looking at eachother trying to guess what to do.

Also this reminds me of the hilarious scene in This is Spinal Tap where Christopher Guest plays a guitar with an actual violin. LOLLLLLLLLL

If you're asking for someone who plays chordal underpinning, it's Keith Richards, and it's not even close.

"19th nervous Breakdown", "Brown Sugar", "Tumbling Dice", "Honky Tonk Women", which pretty much defined the whole concept, for starters. And this little under-appreciated gem.

Malcolm Young would be second, and yeah, it is a true damn shame about him.

Yeah, it's not just the "right field" of a rock group, contrary to popular opinion.

You can teach yourself scales, speed and technique. I know about a dozen players, locally, who can shred with anyone. Those guys are a dime a dozen.

They can't lock in, and they can't groove. You either have it, or you don't. Guys who have it are harder to find than guys hiding behind fretboard gymnastics.

And guys like Bob Weir (and most of the time, I'd rather listen to a parrot on downs sing the Taylor Swift catalog than the Grateful Dead) and Keith Richards added a harmonic element that is easily overlooked.

lol hell yeah. They are considering when and where to accompany/ follow Page's lead. Bonham clearly shaking his head in disapproval or annoyance to having to add to wat he's doing to mimic Page's extra few notes lol Classic.

I interpreted it as Bonham wanting no drums or bass notes at that part and Jonesy hitting that bass note and Bonham shaking his head no then Jonesy shrugs like "who the hell knows". lol. Page always said their virtue live was to play "tight but loose".

Damn I forgot about this EVH isolated track.

Entire track is great, esp. from 2:21 on.

1978. This is basically a standalone song. You don't even need a vocalist, bassist, or drummer.

2 guys from the underground metal community who deserve mention:

Dave Knudson from Botch
John Adubato from Burnt By The Sun

Both have some of more unique riffing in the genre.

That dude from the Scorpions. One solo'd every note the other carried the tune.

I think Alex Lifeson is one of the best. And always like The Edge's rhythm work, especially the earlier stuff. Also, as other have mentioned, EVH.

The Edge is a very interesting choice. His stuff is really easy to play and pretty simple. However, he has his own signature sound where it would be really easy to identify one of his pieces even if you've never heard the song before. That quality is really rare. I wouldn't put him up as the best but the fact that he has such a unique sound makes him a damn good guitar player IMO.

Yeah he uses a lot of technical know-how with the amp and all kinds of effects. But his sound is very much his and it seems to work perfectly for U2 songs. Which is what music is about - not how many notes you can jam in and how cool you look onstage (well OK it's a little of that!)

Yeah, I like his sound and style. All the harmonics and effects and the choppy muted strings stuff.
