But I still had a great time. When my friend and I were sitting there waiting prior to the show, two younger gents carrying brand new binoculars came in and sat next to us... we proceeded to share some kick arse spleef with them in exchange for usage of the binoculars during the show. About 20 minutes into the show I look over and both of them hand there heads hanging down in the hands on their laps complete blotto. My friend and I just laughed and after another 10 minutes we looked over and somehow these two other guys had disappeared... completely gone for the rest of the night. Needless to say we picked up a brand new pair of binoculars.

My first concert ticket was in the spring of 1979 for Styx and The Cars. I didn't make the show though.

KISS - 3x
The Who
The Tubes
The Plasmatics, opened for KISS in Dubuque, IA
Rush
Van Halen with Sammy Hagar
The Police - 2x
Trent Reznor without NIN
Tom Petty
James Brown
Foreigner
INXS
Joan Jet
Flock of Seagulls
Willie Nelson
I think I saw Morris Day and the Time one night at a club in Chicago but I was so drunk it could have been anyone.

KISS shows never disappointed me.

I saw hundreds of shows, but I would say Top Ten were:

The Clash
Public Image Ltd
Swans
Mogwai
Mono
Tom Waits
The Cure (1981)
Minor Threat
Gang of Four
The Pogues

I would likely change that list tomorrow, but that's what comes to mind right now.

Some favorite times:

Phish at Deer Creek- busting into Fluffhead while it was pouring rain outside.
Beastie Boys- Bringing George Clinton for an encore
Paul Simon- all the musicians he played with were incredible
Phish at the Palace of Auburn Hills 1997-First Phish show..tripped on shrooms and was blown away by the music and crowd. Sick ass Tweezer too. Prob my fav concert ever.

Regrets:
Passing on free tickets to see Pink Floyd
Passing on free tickets to see RATM and Wu Tang Clan
Going to see the Wallflowers
Got busted at The Other Ones concert in the parking lot cranking off a nitrous tank. Sercurity took all our weed, alcohol, mushrooms, and tank, and then sent us into the concert with nothing.
My buddies car got broken into at a Steve Miller Concert and a bunch of stuff got stolen. That sucked.

Seen hundreds and couldn't even begin to list them all ( or remember them all ). But the first concert I saw was Joe Walsh in 1973. The last show was last month in Nashville, the Avett Bros.

The 1st two concerts I went to were "The Supremes" & "Cream". Both in St. Louis.

Probably my favorite concert was at one of the outdoor venues where they have seating for so many rows in front of the stage with some type of roof & behind that is a big grassy hill where folks bring their blankets & also some goodies of choice to enhance their listening experience.

I was living in Ohio at the time & the venue was called Blossom Music Center. The band was Pink Floyd right after they came out with "Dark Side of the Moon" & that is what they played.

Another enjoyable concert that comes to mind is seeing Brian Auger & the Oblivion Express right after they came out with their album "Closer To It". I saw that at the E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Center which is by Akron University.....anybody heard of the "Zips" (Akron U.'s nickname).

That building was almost brand new at the time & was supposed to have been built for great acoustics & Auger & the O. Express sounded great. Although I do remember we had to sit through the warm up act which was Suzie Quatro & that was pretty brutal. Anybody remember her?

If memory serves that was the 1st and last "Rock Concert" they held there. I think it was built for more of a chamber music & classical pianist type performers & audiences, but I'm not sure about that, was a long time ago.

I also think that in some instances how concerts are remembered have quite a bit to do with how you were feeling at the time.

The original Live Aid, JFK Stadium in Philly. Was mad at my mom when we missed the Hooters opening. I was tired and kept begging her to go home during Mick Jagger and Tina Turner singing "Dancing in the Streets". I was young.

-Jackson 5, with Micheal.

-The Who

-Rolling Stones

-Pink Floyd w/o Waters

-Roger Waters x7

-Madonna

-David Bowie

-Genesisx2

-Yes (From the 4th row)

-Metallica x4

-Pearl Jamx2

-Grateful Dead

-Paul McCartney

-Paige + Plant

-Plant solo

-Green Day x3. (Got kicked out of one for smoking pot in the bathroom. Talked a scalper into selling me a ticket for five bucks to get back in. Girlfriend was pissed I disappeared.)

-Megadeth x2 headlining

-Antrax x2

-Monsters of rock tour w/ Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer. (Alice in Chains opened, and were horrible. "Man in a Box" was a big hit at the time and I didn't recognize they were playing it till half was through the song.)

-Suicidal Tendencies

-REM

-Hootie and the Blowfish. (My least favorite concert, wanted to take a nap during the show.)

-Alice Cooper (Free concert in Philly during the day so I didn't really see his stageshow.)

-Tom Petty x2

-Rush x2

-Kiss

-Candlebox (Flaming Lips opened and blew me away. I'd never heard of them but they immediately became my favorite band.)

-Flaming Lips, headlining in a small place in Philly. At most, 50 people were there. I could literally walk up and stand front and center of the stage. They were visibly disappointed by the turnout and didn't bother with an encore.

-Ozzy w/o Black Sabbeth

-Black Sabbeth w/o Ozzy

-Donny and Marie (My first concert)

-The Hooters

-Blink 182

-Lynyrd Skynyrd

-Snuck into Bon Jovi half way through. Same for the real Guns and Roses.

That pretty much describes Black Sabbath in '72 at the Forum in Inglewood, Ca.
Wild Turkey and Sabbath opened for Yes.

David Bowie at the LA Amphitheater in '74, long before they put a roof on it.

Rolling Stones in '75 at the LA Forum and again in '83 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Rod Stewart and Faces, Loggins and Messina, Fleetwood Mac at Anaheim Stadium in '75.
Saw Rod Stewart solo in mid or late 80's, don't remember where.

The Who at Anaheim Stadium in '79.

Prince opened that '83 show for the Stones and got booed, and food and drinks thrown at him for most of the set.

Lots of LA Forum shows early/mid 80's,
Genesis, Journey with Loverboy opening, Yes, Def Leopard, Ratt, Poison...

Phil Collins early or mid 80's at Universal Amphitheater and at the Greek Theater in Griffith Park.

Peter Gabriel early or mid 80's at Universal Amphitheater.

Cheap Trick at Disneyland 1984.

Beach Boys mid or late 80's the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, CA.

ZZ Top mid or Late 80's at Universal Amphitheater.

Deep Purple late 80's Irvine Meadows, Orange County CA.

Oingo Boingo early 90's at Universal Amphitheater and again at Irvine Meadows.

Lots more I'm forgetting right now.

Seen a lot of the rock/metal/punk bands already mentioned and by far the most disappointing with regards to expectations were Guns n Roses. Every song was half a song, 3 minute Slash solo whilst Axel wandered off stage followed by the other half of the song.

All, except for Peter Yarrow, were seen in their prime and not on the "casino circuit." Many of the '60s performers listed were not seen in entire concerts but as parts of shows with several acts. Some of those listed were also seen in clubs rather than concert venues. The most memorable, of course, was The Beatles. However, the "best" concerts IMHO were those of Ricky Nelson, James Brown, and Harry Chapin.

I did some bouncing at a smallish club for a while in the early 2000's. College town, interesting mix of shows. Just some I remember, with some notes-

Kenny Chesney (this was like a warm up for a stadium tour. Not my cup of tea, but a terrific performer. And the girls were woo)
Robert Earl Keene (Always a great show, fun crowd)
Evan Dando (Dick)
Particle
Mike Doughty
Southern Culture on the Skids (the worst humans on planet)
Arrested Development (the best humans on the planet)
TMBG
Pork Tornado
Galactica
Richie Havens (just great)
Frank Black (my favorite show)
Dinosaur Jr.
Yo La Tengo
Chris Robinson
Gavin DeGraw
David Allen Coe (funny, somewhat racist)
Dickey Betts
John Mayer
Cracker
Camper Van Beethoven
Fastball
Melissa Ferrick
Indigo Girls (shows with a bunch of lesbians were the best. Clean, nice group)

Sure a bunch more. It was a fun gig, but got hard to get up for work the next day.

Best shows I actually paid for are Arcade Fire most recently, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, and the Cure when I was younger.

Saw a great REM show at MSG in around 96

Ramones in a small club around that time was pretty crazy.

OP, I'm mostly impressed that you're into jam bands and have only seen Dave Matthews Band once. I catch a lot of flack for it (douchey fan base is a major image problem for us "hipster" DMB fans), but my tally is well above 30, close to 40. Three day stints at The Gorge help boost that total.

Beyond that, I used to keep a hand written list of concerts I've been to, and it was lonnnggggg. Went to tons of indie rock shows, close to weekly, when I lived in Seattle late 90s, early 2000s, and there are a few bands/artists that are so good live I'll see them whenever they're close. Bands other than DMB I've seen multiple times include Robert Earl Keen (4), Modest Mouse (~5), Built to Spill (~8), Bad Religion (3), Flogging Molly (4), Counting Crows (5), Jimmy Buffett (4), and I'm sure a bunch more I can't think of.

I have a pretty good list for a 31 year old, but there are SOOO many shows I wish I had gone to. So many shows are in the middle of the week and I feel old and tired and don't go, but I honestly can't think of a concert I've been to where I haven't been really happy I did. Live music is just awesome.

List of people on my must-see list that I haven't seen include John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker (who doesn't really tour), and Social Distortion.
