This is a challenging catagory so I'll get it out of the way while I can with my first choice.

I love this movie but it was not a financial or critical success. In fact it drove director Martin Scorcese to depression and drugs due to its lack of success.

Liza Minelli is a singer and Robert DeNiro is a saxaphone player. All of the music in this movie is part of the story as they perform and audition and the music is tremendous. If you like big band, jazz and 40's music you should enjoy the soundtrack. It is the only soundtrack I have in regular rotation on my ipod.

As the war (WWII) ends they meet at an audition, eventually join the same band, marry, seperate, have a kid, but always follow their music.

Great pick. One of my favorite movies of all time. This was my original pick for this category, and I figured I'd slide it over into the "musician starring in the movies" category.

Sorry, Dom, but this is Glen Hansard's finest hour. And Natalie singing "I Never Loved A Man"? Sweet Lordy Gosh.

As I said before, I believe this is my first draft so forgive my ignorance but: is the primary purpose to make as creative a pick as possible, or as indisputable a pick...? I can think of many obvious choices but also some less obvious more off-the-wall ones. Which are better?

That's up to you and I think part of the fun. I have some serious picks and some creative picks planned. The main thing for me anyway is to talk about movies I like. Even if a pick is indisputable I won't pick it if I don't like it.

Round 2 (last one) A movie with a number in the title that’s not a sequel


8 1/2 (1963) Black and White film by a guy with a name that sounds like a type of pasta.




Impeccably dressed film hack is hounded to insanity; he has flashbacks to his tortured life as a man-child goon under the thumb of a decayed Italian social system bent at the spine by Religious Quackery, wine making gone amuck, and fat dancing prostitutes. Bouncing back and forth from past to present is countered by scenes with his lover(s) and his wife- a wife that is almost as impeccably dressed as he is and has a mannish appearance to created the illusion of Freudian dysfunction. The media are dogs, people are parasites, sex is a tool, the church is a farce, and making films is an art no respectable person would indulge in. At the end you dance – or float in the air, take your pick.
