Just call me "X".

Oliver Stone's paranoia fueled whirlwind conspiracy masterpiece, JFK. I never really understood the criticism of this one, I don't believe it's meant to be taken seriously in that way - Stone himself refered to it as "counter-myth." I love, love, love the courtroom scene; when Costner directly addresses the audience "it's up to you" it gives me chills. The cast is unreal good, including Sutherland as the mysterious X. Edited to perfection. One of my favorites.
I checked this on IMDB, knowing that Costner gets top billing. But not according to IMDB. I like this one a lot too, and I'd like it even more if Stone really does see it as a myth.

Imdb does not necessarily bill from the top star down. That is NOT how I will determine if DS is top billed or not.

Wiki usually does a good job, as well as some other sites.

this is well said
Quote:
One might say that Stone's cinema in JFK turns its viewer into such an outcast. This fusillade of imagery tears a hole in the fabric of truth, bombarding the viewer with the perpetual sensation of forbidden revelation. We are forever divorced from a pure, unquestioning acceptance of history as given to us by the mainstream. What we are left with is the impression of reality as a grim, deterministic struggle between various forces competing to wield the most compelling, most seductive narrative for us to accept.

In the middle of this is Stone's cinema, carrying the viewer aloft in its sheer force, disorienting in its persuasiveness, persuasive in its disorientation. Not unlike the authoritarian forces against which Oliver Stone wages movie warfare, instead of speaking truth to power, JFK speaks cinematic power to truth

If DS is top billed OR 2nd or even 3rd billed where he is the male lead or in a equal role type film, I will probably rule against it. For example, MASH would not be accepted.

I agree its well said. The mythmaking of film enacts its own grand narrative, leaving all other narratives, official and otherwise, impotent in its arc. In other words, Stone trusts, it seems, his own narrative when he should know better.

Round One
Donald Sutherland

Animal House

Looks like Donald is going fast here He has a few really good choices left but this one is my favorite. Might as well take my all-time favorite comedy which features him as a professor at the very prestigious Faber College. Of course he's bopping a coed and we even get to see his naked butt although that didn't influence my pick. I just love this movie. A true classic.

so far:
Animal House (Donald Sutherland)

First movie I thought of when I saw the category. You sniped me, mb; I have no choice but to place you now on double secret probation.
