****Weird Film Draft # 2 Official Thread****

Here we go!

You are picking from these categories:

  • A movie with Donald Sutherland where he is not top-billed
Meaning, he is not the male lead or co-lead in the film

  • A movie with a number in the title that’s not a sequel

  • A movie that stars or co-stars a musician/singer not playing him or herself
No concert films, cameos, or roles where the musician is ONLY performing music - it must be an acting role

  • A movie that takes place in Florida
For the majority of the film

  • A movie in which we see the naked breasts of the female lead
More so than a side-boob quick glance if you pause the film juuuuust right. In other words - full-on titty shot!

  • A movie about a car
In which the car, truck, bus, other road vehicle plays an INTEGRAL PART in the film

  • A movie about a writer, real or fictional

  • A movie whose title includes the name of a non-human monster

  • A movie that takes place on or in water
For the majority of the film

  • A “realistic” musical
Meaning, one where characters do not unrealistically break out into song - like in Oklahoma! or West Side Story. The musical aspects of the film must be realistically motivated by the plot.

As in past drafts, I encourage you to interpret these categories broadly and to think outside of the box. As long as your defense of your pick in your write-up is entertaining and somewhat valid, I will probably allow it.

The only rules in this draft are as follows:
  1. You can pick any category at any time.
  2. When making your pick, choose both the film and the category for which you are picking.
  3. Once a film has been chosen, it cannot be chosen by anyone else for a different category.
  4. Your pick gets you exactly THAT FILM - not its sequels, etc.

The draft will be a reverse-snake. Here is the draft order:

Zeno
vixticator
mrbaseball
Klavs
nyc999
LOL LDO
Ryan Firpo
BrokeDonk
MSchu18
nunnehi
kudzudemon
hotdogfallacy
Bo Goldman
John Cole
Dominic

The 2nd round is the exact opposite of this. The third round the same as above, etc.

After you make your selection, you are required to PM the next person who drafts so that they are made aware that it is their turn in another way as well. This should serve to speed up the draft somewhat.

When making a selection, it is required that one includes pictures of whatever it is they are drafting, as well as a write-up which explains their selection. The write-up should be at least a couple sentences, and can be as long as one likes. The selections should be as specific as possible, and if they are too vague, one will be asked to clarify/specify. Also, make sure you start your post with something like this:

Round 1, Pick #7

Spoilers are usually used, although I don't know why and don't feel you have to do so. But if you want to, go for it.

Once the draft starts, posters will have 4 hours from the time they are on the clock to make their pick. If they fail to make their pick within the 4 hour timeframe, the next person has 4 hours to pick. However, the person who was skipped has the opportunity to draft at any point, but if what they wanted was taken by someone whose draft selection was after them, they are out of luck. There will be no "deadzone" in the middle of the night because people keep very random hours & are in different time zones as it is. If you are not able to select when it's your turn, it is not a big deal, and you will be able to do so the next time you sign on.

If your pick was skipped one round, it will be automatically skipped the next round (which means the next person does not have to wait before making their selection) if you have not made up that pick yet.

If one does not expect to be around at the time of their pick, they can PM their pick (and potentially back-up pick if their 1st choice is gone) & write-up to me or someone that will be around to post these for them.

For now I will make all rulings as to what is ruled out by various selections, but I might enlist the help of others depending on availability.

Have fun with this draft! Make serious picks, make silly picks, make controversial picks and picks that generate discussion.

The draft begins now, so Zeno is up, but he will not be on the clock until he sees this thread. Once he picks, Vixticator will be on the 4-hour clock.

SPREADSHEET

It has two pages - check it out and familiarize yourself with it. When you make a pick - UPDATE THE SPREADSHEET - BOTH PAGES!

Re: ****Weird Film Draft # 2 Official Thread****

As I mentioned in the interest thread, this will be tough for me before Monday - currently traveling, with a 6-hour flight tomorrow.

For the most part, I'll be posting picks this weekend, but writeups will have to wait until Monday.

With that said, gogogo

I might have Hikeeba picking for me now and then, but I'll try to make most of my picks. Fortunately, he doesn't think like me. Unfortunately, he thinks like Zeno.

So does Jonathan Swift, H.L. Mencken, Voltaire, Mark Twain, Karl Kraus, Ambrose Bierce and Denis Diderot, and come to think of it; so does Christopher Hitchens for the most part (though I arbor Trotskyism) and on many important issues so does that verbose hellhound Kudzu. Of course, I’m smarter than all those guys.

As I expected I am first up and already had my silly Donald Sutherland movie picked out, so I will be posting shortly.

Good luck to eveyone. It will be interesting who comes in second to yours truly.

Round 1 Pick 1 [A movie with Donald Sutherland where he is not top-billed]

Kelly’s Heroes (1970): where the big Donald Duck Sutherland plays Sgt. Oddball. I know this pick is rather obvious but I truly love this movie and Don does an excellent job as the off-the-wall tank commander. Besides, this movie is just plain fun, entertaining, with great comedy mixed with war action and suspense and it is always a pleasure to watch. And one reason is Don’s great contribution to this classic film. Oh yeah – and any movie worth seeing multiple times is a great movie – and I submit Kelly’s Heroes fits the bill.

Don soaks up some rays:

I'll PM Vixticator...........

Round 1, Pick 2 [A movie with Donald Sutherland where he is not top-billed]

Just call me "X".

Oliver Stone's paranoia fueled whirlwind conspiracy masterpiece, JFK. I never really understood the criticism of this one, I don't believe it's meant to be taken seriously in that way - Stone himself refered to it as "counter-myth." I love, love, love the courtroom scene; when Costner directly addresses the audience "it's up to you" it gives me chills. The cast is unreal good, including Sutherland as the mysterious X. Edited to perfection. One of my favorites.
