Now I'm trying to remember if I started a Camper Van Beethoven thread here in the Lounge years ago that I need to bump. Geniuses! Key Lime Pie probably a top 5 80s album.

One of my med school classmates and talent-show/follies band members suggested we play "Excitable Boy" at our show. I didn't know that much about Warren back then but I feel like I learned a lot about my classmate after he picked that song...

This is a great song off Traverse City, maybe one of his least appreciated albums. Such great lyrics. "Michael Jackson in Disneyland, don't have to share it with nobody else. Lock the gates. Goofy, take my hand. And lead me through the world of self."

There was a period in the early/mid-80s when Zevon was living fairly reclusively in Philadelphia, later he said all he did for months was drink and eat Philly cheesesteaks.

I am almost ashamed to admit that somehow I completely missed Warren Zevon, except for Werewolves of London, until about five years ago. So much great music.

A truly great artist. But how on earth has no one mentioned Desperadoes Under The Eaves yet? If not his best track, it's at least top 3!

I should probably add that I have a tattoo sleeve dedicated to him and his music. With his character creations, I had a lot of stuff to choose from when it came to ideas for tattoos!

Listening to this right now, if I'd heard if before I don't remember it. Great song!

Kioshk, just in case you haven't heard it, another GREAT Zevon track somewhat similar to that is The French Inhaler, also from his not quite debut album, Warren Zevon. I'd post a YouTube link to save you the trouble of searching for it, but I'll hold my hands up and admit I don't know how.

Enjoy!

I think Linda Ronstadt covered this one, a few others too.

Ha, bizarrely, I listened to that for the first time in about 3 years earlier today. Life'll Kill Ya is a great album. For My Next Trick I'll Need A Volunteer is another of his standout tracks for sure.

CaptainRocknRoll, you should post more here in the Lounge. You remind me a little of a Lounge stalwart named kudzudemon. He loved him some Zevon too.

Our hero is 18 across in today's NYTimes crossword. "Warren with the 1978 platinum album Excitable Boy."

WZ is also in a crossword in an early episode of 'Californication'. "What's a five letter word for excitable boy?... ZEVON!!!"

The writers and/or Duchovny must be big fans because many of his songs are played throughout the series. WZ is also mentioned at least one other time when Hank is relaxing at home and a friend inquires what he's been up to all day. Hank replies, "Whiskey, weed, and Warren Zevon. It's the little things."

Ya he's mentioned dozens of times in Californication. Whiskey, weed, and Warren Zevon is actually Hank's ritual anytime he completes a book... it's just not memorable because he does it so infrequently.

I agree with the poster above who says Zevon isn't underrated. He enjoys that perfect balance of obscurity and popularity where everybody who's heard of him loves him. Any more popular and there would be audible haters, any more obscure and he would be criminally under-appreciated.
