So the last one was just a bad episode? No artistry?

The last one was a mess. How could he take a show like this and do what he did to it? I mean he created these characters, he made us love them. Frankly, and I'm not even kidding around when I say this, I think he sort of screwed it up.

Well he's a little warped that's all!! And he has such a horrible way of ending his series . And he's creepy. But if you guys like him then I guess I can respect that and anyway I wasn't seriously going to lose respect for you.

Newsflash: The Definitive Gold Edition comes out tomorrow (30th October), containing the pilot, and every episode of season 1 and season 2, remastered! Plus extras.

I'm probably gonna buy this, or ask for it as a Christmas present, just to get a definitive set.

SWEEEEEEET!

I saw this, too...I wish I had not watched the whole thing recently! I'll probably buy it, though...the second season really does stink after Leeland dies and before Annie arrives...

Yes, but using this thread, you can work out which episodes to skip!

I finished watching the Gold Edition of Twin Peaks. The parts directed by Lynch in particular are the best things ever put on TV. The series of 29 episodes is excellent except for the stretch after we discover who killed Laura Palmer. It just became a normal TV show for that period, with some silly subplots and lack of development. But it picks up, especially from episode 25 onwards when Agent Cole (Lynch) makes his appearance.

The first episode of season 2, number 8 was fantastic and scared the hell out of me. I haven't seen anything on TV as frightening as those scenes with Bob.

And my God, what a finale. Absolutely awesome. As interesting as a season 3 would have been, it is unnecessary. Haunting.

It's easy to see how Twin Peaks paved the way for one of my other favourite shows: The X Files.

First, not everything has to end happily. Second, Lynch may have thought he was going to get to continue the series (maybe the movie deal was already definite or looking good?). Then with the movie, he was supposedly promised a Season 3 and/or more movies (if the movie had done well, there were going to be 2 more), so he may have decided to make it a prequel rather than sequel thinking he WOULD eventually get to continue.

I don't know if the ending is that bad. I think (haven't seen Fire Walk With Me yet) that Cooper will eventually prevail, or at least escape the Black Lodge.

What do others think happens afterwards?

The thing is that obviously if they were given a full third season, Cooper would get out and be alive and well (possibly intermittently possessed though I guess).

Lynch does a movie in 2014 (25 years later)? One time?

Interestingly, I am much more frightened by the non-obvious scares than the obvious normal horror movie scenes. I am scared just from the atmospheric shots of the Palmer household. During the Leland/BOB/Maddie scene, my emotion was that of relief. I was terrified by the anticipation, but once BOB showed himself and became a traditional horrific villain I was fine.

Similarly, BOB's destruction of Windom Earle briefly eased my tension. I see that scene almost exactly like the scene in Jurassic Park where the t-rex comes in and attacks the velociraptors. The Threat From Before coming in and destroying the Threat at Hand.

I am, however, definitely terrified when BOB and then later Laura come directly at the camera.

My female rankings, based on how they looked on the show:

Audrey
Norma
Annie
Maddie/Laura (this is tricky because I'm scared of her)
Lucy (yea I said it, and tbh she may deserve to be higher)
Shelley (obviously gorgeous, but looks too thin on the show - is, remarkably, hotter now than she was then)
Donna
Catherine

Nadine and Josie do not make the list.

Also, I think my favourite and most moving scene in the whole series was Leland's death. It's still vivid to me.

Hell, I might watch the whole thing all over again.

Well apparently I have a very sketchy memory!
ok, i just googled her and I know who you're talking about now. She's the one Andy liked. I should probably rewatch some of these just so I remember all the characters. I'd forgotten all about Lucy and Andy and Dick! lol.

Hah! Now THAT i remember.

Check this out, the part was originally written for James Spader (who turns me on for some reason)

David Duchovny quote:
Quote:
David: That part was written for James Spader who knew the producers of "Twin Peaks". And he, for some reason, had to drop out and they were desperately trying to cast the role and I think I came in on a Friday with an emery board. That was my big deal. That's all. That's what I did during the audition and it worked. I just remembered thinking 'oh my God, I've never been in a dress or shaved my legs and now I've got to go do this on Monday'. And I had no idea what I was doing. I was thinking why, aside from sexual preference or liking to wear a dress, would a man want to be a woman? And I just felt well, you get to be more spontaneous and open and friendly. That's kind of the approach I took. A very innocent, friendly kind of point of view.

Well you are probably asking the wrong person here . In terms of it being a classic and something that will always have a place in TV history, then yes it's worth seeing. There's really nothing like it...kind of a weird blend of soap opera and art. But if you are expecting it to have some sort of cheerful resolution, then be forewarned. Personally, I think the creator botched the ending and I don't know why he would do that. But Diebitter and Dominic disagree so it would be fun to get your opinion! It's a long series so takes a commitment.

My favorite moment by far is Albert giving the speech about violence, quoted earlier in the thread and now again for posterity:

Albert: While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself on taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely pride, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. I love you Sheriff Truman.

[Albert leaves]

Cooper: Albert's path is a strange and difficult one.

That exchange alone puts it into the top 5 shows ever as far as I'm concerned.

I don't find Josie attractive at all. Catherine I think I would have fun with, even though she's getting towards being over the hill on the show.

The Gold Box set has fantastic extras. Everything from promos and Japanese coffee commercials (which are all quite good, the latter telling a somewhat silly story of another missing girl with the Black Lodge involved) to the actual 1-900 number audio messages from back in the day*, to SNL skits, to info on the real-life locations, to pictures taken on set by Richard Beymer (Ben Horne), to really solid discussions with Lynch and crew and a long documentary on the making-of.

Also, it looks like we will be getting it on Blu-Ray soon. The question is what will we get? I am betting that it will be the show and movie, plus more special features, PLUS the long sought-after deleted scenes from the movie (possibly re-edited into it), some of which take place AFTER the events of the series and might shed some light on things. This guy is teasing the announcement:

http://twinpeaksarchive.blogspot.com/

I also would not write off the possibility of there being a continuation of the story at some point. MacLachlan this year supposedly said he was interested in doing short webisodes.

So what do you guys think? Is Cooper trapped forever?

*For those of you too young or not in the U.S. who don't know what 900 numbers are: In the late 80's through early 90's these were huge. There were constant commercials asking you to call "1-900-xxx-xxxx", $1.99 the first minute, $0.99 each additional minute (or whatever). They had them for everything you could imagine. The Twin Peaks line was a recording with weekly recaps, read by Lucy and Andy in character. Many other shows had something similar, and they even had random things like a "Two Coreys" line where you could listen to Cory Haim and Corey Feldman be dreamy together. All in all it was a pretty predatory practice and obviously was geared towards getting kids to call without asking their parents first (of course they told you to get permission, but...). Totally a relic of the early 90's.

I also like the character of albert. I'm not sure if he's being totally sincere in that speech, because he is standoffish and also judgmental at times. He is actually pretty confrontational, and instigates the fight where Sheriff Truman knocks him out. The speech may crystallize his understanding of love, but he acts rashly and also works for the FBI, not exactly the foremost peaceful organization. It shows the split between conceptualized principles and objective social reality, to the extent that such a thing should be trusted

Our confusion at him making the speech is what makes it so great and hilarious. I think that he is being 100% sincere. He was definitely judgmental and confrontational in prior episodes, although they largely did away with that after he gave that speech. Did he ever actually initiate or encourage violence? It's possible his character was planned that way all along, or it's possible that when writing that episode they thought "hey, wouldn't it be funny if Albert gave a speech denouncing violence?", retconning his personality to an extent.

In any event it's all explained away by "Albert's path is a strange and difficult one."

When I eventually re-watch the series, am I allowed to skip most of the second season after episode 16? I'll watch those first 16 again in a heartbeat, but getting through 17-25 or so will be a big chore.

I think this trhread is a good way to skip the bad ones, just read the synopses and comments, and you can still cherrypick good scenes at least.

Not reading the thread since I have only managed to get through Season One (as its the only one on DVD; wait is that still true?), but have watched season one multiple times. I'd just like to add (if it hasn't been added already) that the opening music and shots is probably my favorite of all time. The music especially really captures the show, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on.
