HOLY ****!

Last Episode

I have no clue why I do this to myself, watch David Lynch in an empty house at night. I'm a grown ass man and I am not afraid to admit that Lynch just plain freaks me out. His movies burrow under my skin and his tentacles of terror envelop me in ways I do not grasp. I know this was aired on network TV but I still refuse to believe it.

The whole thing gets blown up. Some of it literally. Poor Audrey, if she is dead that is a sad and pointless way for her to go out. Something was always off with Ben's "face turn", he may be dead now too, but in the end I believe he really did want to become more of a family man. Nadine, back to reality and concerns over her drape runners. Old banker Dell's glasses up in that pine tree. All that wasted fresh mint toothpaste.

And of course, "How's Annie?"

Just an exceptional bit of television history.

Now I gotta find a copy of Fire Walk With Me to rewatch.

I was obviously speaking from the point of view of having episodes left to watch in the original series. Chief Gordon Cole is one of my favorite side characters in TV history.

New book coming out from Mark Frost:

From the co-creator of the landmark series, the story millions of fans have been waiting to get their hands on for 25 long years.

The Secret History of Twin Peaks enlarges the world of the original series, placing the unexplained phenomena that unfolded there into a vastly layered, wide-ranging history, beginning with the journals of Lewis and Clark and ending with the shocking events that closed the finale. The perfect way to get in the mood for the upcoming Showtime series.

I wonder how risque it can get on showtime, and how much they decide to spice it up?

Showtime's CEO already watched the new Twin Peaks and described it as “the pure heroin version of David Lynch.”

David Lynch's comment: “I hear heroin is a very popular drug these days.”

RIP Miguel Ferrer

Agent Rosenfield "Now you listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman."

It is amazing some of these aired on network TV in the 90s for sure. I know what you mean with the late nights. Watching Mulholland Drive in my dark bedroom in the middle of the night, I did not know what I was getting into. I don't know how Lynch does it, but god damn.

Twin Peaks S2 finale was a masterpiece. Ultimately I think the best episodes were the first and last. SO hyped that it's actually coming back.

Same, that destroyed me. Literally too scared to close my eyes until daybreak.

A few years later, Rabbits destroyed me as well. I slept with the light on for weeks. In my mid-20s.

Scene at the end of Mulholland Drive where

Spoiler:
tiny old couple comes in under the door

is still one of the most frightening things I've ever seen in a movie. Completely freaks me out and I can't even pinpoint why.

David Foster Wallace wrote a fantastic (and long) essay on Lynch, one quote I like from the essay:

Quote:
Lynch's movies are inarguably creepy, and a big part of their creepiness is that they seem so personal. A kind and simple way to put it is that Lynch's movies seem to be expressions of certain anxious, obsessive, fetishistic, oedipally arrested, borderlinish parts of the director's psyche, expressions presented with little inhibition or semiotic layering, i.e., presented with something like a child's ingenuous (and sociopathic) lack of self-consciousness. It's the psychic intimacy of the work that makes it hard to sort out what you feel about one of David Lynch's movies and what you feel about David Lynch. The ad hominem impression one tends to carry away from a Blue Velvet or a Fire Walk With Me is that they're really powerful movies, but David Lynch is the sort of person you really hope you don't get stuck next to on a long flight or in line at the DMV or something. In other words, a creepy person.

Yea I was checking under the door the whole rest of that night and probably a bunch of nights thereafter. Rabbits was even worse. Twin Peaks had me shook for the whole length of time I was watching it. I kind of long for that type of fear again; I've gotten "used to" Lynch to a large extent.

Unedited Footage of a Bear, a random Adult Swim short that's on YouTube, does a pretty good job at the same type of thing.

I don't know that I agree with DFW there, seems a bit over-intellectualizing.

I'd love to get stuck next to Lynch on a long flight.

Lynch is a teddy bear and not at all creepy. I worked on Lost Highway for two weeks as a location coordinator for the main house in the movie...he was really funny and kind and friendly.
