Just finished watching the Waco series. Really good. I've watched a documentary on it, but man this really shows the human side of the story. I nearly cried in that last episode and I haven't cried in a crazy long time. Just absolutely brutal.

I've just started Wild Wild Country on Netflix, which is a documentary about an Indian religious cult that tried to build a utopia out in rural Oregon. It's a slow burn so far, but I'm loving this bizarre clash of cultures and apparently things get really bananas as the series progresses..

I loved Wild Wild Country. This is what I wrote about it in the Netflix thread

Wild Wild Country - 96/100

What a story. I definitely don’t think it can be lumped in with Jamestown etc because I don’t believe Osho’s core principles were bad (and after having read what a lot of ppl say about the documentary, I think most of what he taught was quite good)...in the end I think the whole idea got led astray, the good stuff got forgotten, and bad things took its place.

As a sociological experiment I think it’s absolutely fascinating and completely unique.

I went through the whole doc despising Sheela, thinking she was just the biggest sociopath, but then felt a ton of sympathy towards her at the end. Idk what my feelings are towards her really. I think the doc, as good as it was, couldn’t possibly have explained the reasons for why things went down as they did. The main thing that happened is that a lot of mistakes with unintended consequences were made.

What a great watch though. And fantastic music.

Oh and both my gf and I found the lawyer to be SUCH a nasally self-important blowhard

*to me, one of the things that made it so interesting was that it wasn’t like Waco or Jamestown where there is a clear “climax”, a resolution, and more or less a well-defined idea of who the bad guy was. There is a lot more gray in WWC and I think that is part of what has made it stick with me.

Evil Genius https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8342862/

Superb Netflix Original Documentary about the incredible and bizarre 'pizza bomber heist' in Eire PA in 2003.
A man walks into a bank with a home made cane gun and a bomb strapped to his neck and demands money. After being cornered by the cops the bomb detonates and kills him.
This was the first act in a decade long saga that leads the FBI to a string of truly weird and colourful chatracters all of whom have their own story to tell.
Fascinating case that has a truly sad ending.

Agree Barry was great!

Over the past few days I have been bingeing season one of I'm Dying Up Here which recently started season 2 on Showtime. It's about an LA comedy club in the early 70's and I am really enjoying it. Almost caught up to the new season.

Is there no one else in The Lounge watching The Terror? It’s spectacular. Some of the very best television I have ever watched.

Evil Genius just barely worth watching 3/4 episodes in. There is a lot of fat that could have been trimmed. Some might disagree but I don't find the people involved to be very interesting. Not as "genius" and/or "diabolical" as the doc tries to spin it up; more like mentally ill and sad.

I really hope Stephen Root is coming back.

The Noho Hank character is really well thought out.

Watched first 3 episodes of second season of Handmaid's Tale. It sure looks like it is going this (flashback) way. Expanding backstories. Second season still good, but IMO, not as good as the first.

I liked it, but it could have been trimmed by a couple hours. Coincidentally, I had just finished the British series Collateral the day before. So if you want to see two shows about the killing of pizza delivery drivers, these two will do it.

I liked it quite a bit; it lays out so many of our fears, not just about immigrants, but the sort of fears we have about how qualified we are at what we do. I found the captain a particularly compelling character.

John, you've got to watch The Terror....I'm sure you can find the season somewhere...it's spectacular.

BTW, Killing Eve is pretty damn great, too.

Alias Grace was an excellent historical drama. Starred Sarah Gadon as a possibly unreliable narrator telling her origin story of coming to Canada from Ireland and working as a servant in these big houses. Eventually she is convicted of murder and so the show is her telling everything leading up to that to a psychiatrist that has been hired to get her pardoned. Fascinating.

The craziest thing about Evil Genius is the pizza dude sucking on a lollipop while robbing the bank and wearing a device that will take his life hours later.

Agreed; in fact, that was probably the most interesting minute or two of the entire series to me. The "Charlie Chaplin" image of him swirling the cane gun made it especially intriguing and was kind of darkly amusing.
