I'm a big fan of Rogue beers. Although, they've upped the prices considerably, most go for $5+ for a 22 oz bomber...a bit spendy.

The Shakespeare Stout is very good. I also love the Dead Guy Ale, a very good maibock style beer. The Yellow Snow IPA isn't bad, it runs at 70 IBU, I like my IPAs a bit bigger; I wouldn't drink it over a Two Hearted or Furious. I think Rogue has some impressive beers, you'll enjoy.

Drinking SN Torpedos right now.

Very good.. similar to the original although it feels a bit "heavier".

Yeah, you can def feel the hops in this beer. It's a slower drinking IPA for me.

All,

If you want an affordable, lower $/oz alternative to Trappist/Belgian beers, I HIGHLY suggest giving the Trippel and Abbey from New Belgium (Fat Tire). They do a fantastic job with these two beers, especially the Trippel. Although the Abbey doesn't compare to a Rochefort, and the Trippel falls short of a LFDM, they're both extremely great value beers. I believe they both weigh in at 7.0% ABV.

Although these beers are quite what they're Belgian counterparts are, they're a great alternative if you like having a few smaller bottles in the fridge, rather than one large 750 that needs to be drank in one sitting.

Trippel:
Pours with a nice large head and smells of straw, coriander, and other spices, very sweet. Taste is very complex and round. I taste a lot of sweet yeast and other things I can't quite pin point. Carbonation is lower than a LFDM, and the alcohol is pushed back a bit (it's lower). A great tasting, easy to drink Trippel.

Abbey: .5
Pours with a nice two finger foaming head that comes down in about a minute. I'm smelling roasted malts, and something sweeter, maybe grapes? Taste is smooth, clean, and mellow. If savored, you can taste the alcohol on the finish, nothing up front though. Mellow, natural carbonation due to the bottle conditioning. However, unlike great Trappist Dubbels, I don't see any sediment floating in the glass. A great beer though I prefer the Trippel.

*Both beers are bottle conditioned

New Belgium did a damn fine job with these two beers; it's too bad they're best known for Flat Tire, I mean, Fat Tire.

you should try la folie by them. Eric's ale lips of faith (the sour peach ale) is also great and the best session beer i've ever had

I like the "enlightened" black ale, 1554 or something along those lines.

1554 is pretty good, but not even in the same league as the other two or la terroir.

Had a few LeFreak's by GreenFlash.... those are pretty damn good concoctions.
8.3/10 in my book.

I'm drinking a big bottle of Westmalle Tripel right now and it's good, it's not my favorite Tripel, but it's good, and it's giving me a nice buzz.

Breakdown to follow.

Drinking a 22oz Arrogant Bastard Ale right now. Halfway through, it's everything it is chalked up to be. I'm also doubting my ability to finish the whole thing in one sitting; the Double Bastard must be damn near impossible to take down in under an hour.

9.5/10 so far.

Time to review a classic that I oddly haven't tried before:

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. It is a fairly light 5% ABV. I'm not sure how much it costs, as the bottle was a gift.

It pours a nice dark brown with a goodly tan head.

The aroma of the beer is classic stout, with a toasted nuttiness forming the bulk of the smell. The flavor is rich and delicious and balanced. There's the toasty malt and hit of nuts along with some coffee, a light grassy hopping, and I feel like there are a couple other things in there I'm missing. It lingers nicely. I must say, this can even give the Elysian Dragonstooth a run for its money as the best non-imperial stout I've had. This is a little more subtle and balanced while the Dragonstooth is more bombastic and bold. I'll still give the nod to the Dragonstooth, but I'll still give this a and a half rating.

I had two of those last Saturday night while watching the hockey games.

Excellent stuff, although I didn't find it too hard to drink?

To be honest though.. I fill the pint glass and carry the bottle with me to my desk and hurriedly drink enough to pour the rest in the glass.. so I'm prolly going a little quicker than normal with this size bottle.

My reviews have gotten somewhat infrequent ITT, but it's time for another. This time Troegs's Flying Mouflan. I don't really know what style this beer is, but it's 9.3% ABV. I really enjoyed the Mad Elf from Troegs, so I wanted to try another beer from them. This ran me around $7 for a 22 oz bottle, but I lost my receipt and I'm not totally sure of the price.

The beer is a reddish brown ale with a head that's light but respectable for a beer this strong. It's not really cloudy, so it's probably not bottle conditioned.

The smell, however, is deliciously hoppy. This beer may be a competitor with Stone's Arrogant Bastard. Yeah, that's exactly what this is. The hopping is delicious -- citrusy and potent, but it's still backed by a potent, somewhat sweet brown malt. If I was to be given this, Arrogant Bastard, and the Double Bastard in a blind test, I'd probably have a hard time picking them apart. As a consequence, I'd have to get a more accurate price for this and both Bastards and see which is the cheapest and which is the best buzz for your buck. I'd tend towards the cheapest of the 3 first, then the best buzz for your buck. If this was indeed around $7 for a 22, I think I remember the regular Arrogant Bastard being cheaper, so I'd tend buy it if I was just planning on having one delicious beer, but the Flying Mouflan might win if I was planning to have more than one on the way to getting wasted. The Flying Mouflan is a beer. Any fans of Arrogant Bastard should try it.

I have never had Arrogant Bastard...it is weird because before I opened this thread, I was committed to picking some up on my way home. I am becoming somewhat of a hop head.

Tonights review is a new one from Southern Tier, a NY brewery that's a little hit and miss but always cheap. I picked up their Iniquity imperial black ale for probably less than $6 for a 22 oz, but I lost the receipt and forget the exact price. It's a 9% ABV beer.

The beer doesn't really deliver on its name. It's definitely dark brown, not black. It's light on head, but so are most beers this strong. The head it has sticks around very well, though, and it laces my glass.

The aroma is of a sweet dark malt, a good dose of floral hops, and a hint of cherry, a winning combination. The flavor doesn't really live up to the nose. It's not bad, but it's not as great as it smells. The hopping is only moderate, and the feel of the beer is thinner and more watery than I expected. The malt does have a nice mild smoky flavor I didn't smell that's welcome in the finish. This beer isn't bad if it's as cheap as I think it was, but it's not really a stand out.

Wookie -

The Iniquity is $5.99 at my liquor store, probably a bit over priced. I haven't been super impressed with their beers, the Hoppe was alright, and the Cherry Saison wasn't that good.

It might be a bit overpriced, but it's hard to find a 22 oz of 9% beer for less than that. I remember finding a bargain or two in their beers, but I don't recall right now.

True. However, I can buy LDFM and all other Unibroue beers for $6.05/750ml. That makes me happy.

+1, except I really don't like dead guy ale at all.

I've been cutting way back on my beer drinking so haven't been reviewing much. I did have a Russian River Damnation recently (beglian golden), and it was v good. I might get another one soon. If I do I'll put a review up.

I'm getting out of shape since drinking on a weekly basis. Beer is making me weak and unhealthy.

Just curious, how many beers/week do most of you have? I'd say I'm at 1 or 2/night 4 nitghts/week, and then more on the weekends. Probably 12-15 total/wk.
