All,
If you want an affordable, lower $/oz alternative to Trappist/Belgian beers, I HIGHLY suggest giving the Trippel and Abbey from New Belgium (Fat Tire). They do a fantastic job with these two beers, especially the Trippel. Although the Abbey doesn't compare to a Rochefort, and the Trippel falls short of a LFDM, they're both extremely great value beers. I believe they both weigh in at 7.0% ABV.
Although these beers are quite what they're Belgian counterparts are, they're a great alternative if you like having a few smaller bottles in the fridge, rather than one large 750 that needs to be drank in one sitting.
Trippel:
Pours with a nice large head and smells of straw, coriander, and other spices, very sweet. Taste is very complex and round. I taste a lot of sweet yeast and other things I can't quite pin point. Carbonation is lower than a LFDM, and the alcohol is pushed back a bit (it's lower). A great tasting, easy to drink Trippel.
Abbey:
.5
Pours with a nice two finger foaming head that comes down in about a minute. I'm smelling roasted malts, and something sweeter, maybe grapes? Taste is smooth, clean, and mellow. If savored, you can taste the alcohol on the finish, nothing up front though. Mellow, natural carbonation due to the bottle conditioning. However, unlike great Trappist Dubbels, I don't see any sediment floating in the glass. A great beer though I prefer the Trippel.
*Both beers are bottle conditioned
New Belgium did a damn fine job with these two beers; it's too bad they're best known for Flat Tire, I mean, Fat Tire.
