I'm sure I don't need to tell you what my advice would be.

Then, I'm sitting at the volleyball game with another teacher and I had three female students of mine come and sit near me. Not "by me" but near me. I didn't really say anything, but I felt like I should have gave some, "This is for teachers only" comment or something maybe. Just seemed awkward-ish. The teacher I was with was talking about leaving and I told her she couldn't, because then I'd have to tell them to move or awkwardly sit alone with three 14 year old girls.

You should've said something like "Sorry girls, this is faculty seating only. Student section is RIGHT HERE" and point to your crotch. If even one of them comes and sits on your lap it was worth it.

By the way, I told them about our vocab quiz. They had the 10 words and 10 definitions as they would be on the matching quiz. I gave them a homework assignment that night before that would force them to address the vocab for at least 10 minutes.
Class average across all freshmen (like 75) was a 5.4 out of 10. I realize part of it was my strategy, but cmon. 5.4/10 AVERAGE? wow.

This is mindblowing.

I look forward to hearing about, while feeling sorry for Solo and our whole planet about, the parents complaining about unfairness to their kids. And wonder how far they might take it.
I do wish it would not come down to that. But given ... the givens ... my usual rampant optimism is tempered.

I allow one absence--and that covers stuff like abdominal injuries. So, right now, she's fine. If she misses another class, she will lose a letter grade. I will make exceptions in extreme circumstances--I'm not a hardass.

Okay, logically it's #1 exam grades because exam grades are everything.

Re: Teaching Stories...Brought to you by SoloAJ...
There are obviously classes where exams don't fit, even in technical classes. Any programing class that has an exam is poorly structured. Quizzes on some sections or concepts are ok. But if you are going to test someone's programing ability, you should have them write a program in a setting like you would actually program as a project.

Re: Teaching Stories...Brought to you by SoloAJ...
I pinned myself down for tomorrow, unfortunately. I had them read a short story, but now I only have one day to work with it AND review for the quarterly test. So I can't do much with the short story. Stupid quarterly test at the midway point of the quarter. So stupid.
I got a little lazy this week. Not terribly, but I basically planned my whole week ahead of time and didn't adjust when I should have. Lesson learned.
My school has so much goofy crap going on. Rumor has it that by March, we will have ZERO budget for office supplies of any kind. No more books, no more paper, no more pencils even. They're going to preemptively freeze department accounts in a couple months, apparently. Oh boy.

Re: Teaching Stories...Brought to you by SoloAJ...
I take issue with the fact he thinks we have easy weekends and 9-5 (usually less). lol please.
Some of that is probably true. I am pretty sarcastic with my students. I'm not always mean about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if a couple students hated it. The girl who is in love with me seemed pretty mad at me today. Oh well.
Today was fun Friday. That involved a quiz and a study guide for the midterm. I basically jabbered at them the whole time, though. Whatever.

It's better than her ignoring you; it means she's paying attention to you and cares enough to get upset. And she could just be getting all pouty and playing hard to get. High school girls love to make you work for it.
You've got the whole semester. Just take your time and you'll get this bird no prob.

Re: Teaching Stories...Brought to you by SoloAJ...
haha. Love it Landon.
She told me today that she had a dream about me. But she prefaced it by explaining how she fell asleep reading the homework assignment, so English class was on her mind. Then she had a dream that I was yelling at her and her friend for something or other. She was all right when telling me that story early in the day.
Later in the day she was hating life. Maybe I spurned her in a daydream. I don't know.
I need to get my act together. This was seriously such a lazy week. Time to step up my game.
