Great first day/night.. Put his bed on our bedroom floor last night instead of the kitchen where it usually will be and he went to sleep when I did and didn't make a peep all night.. I got up at 5:30 and he was getting up then too.. Took him outside for a bit, I wanted to get back to sleep, he wanted to play, so I put him in the kitchen while I tried to get more sleep and he was crying.. glad we didn't do that throughout the night

Thankfully my g/f is doing work from home during the day throughout the summer and has class at night so someone will be home with him at almost all times.. Should lead to a fast potty training..

$60 at Petco, if it makes him comfortable it's well worth it imo.. He's def a sweetheart, he already got my g/f to skip class this morning and stay home with him because he started to cry when she was leaving.. I had a feeling that would happen

Just remember to set the rules early though, the quicker you can start training the better (within reason). The cute chewing of shoes etc when they are small and their little accidents which dont do much harm soon turn into a more valuable chew toy such as the tv wires being used and a ZOMG where the hell did all that come from.

I can't recall ever meeting a golden retriever that wasn't pretty friendly.

With someone being home with him for almost all hours of the day I'd imagine we'll do a good job of having him outside when he needs to go to the bathroom and rewarding him for that.. Last night he started to pee on the carpet but as soon as he started we saw him and got him outside to finish.. both craps so far have been outside so that's good

He really hasn't started chewing up shoes or cords at this point.. He will if you are playing with him but he's mostly just sniffing stuff right now.. g/f said he started to bite the sticker on a cord and she stopped him and he walked away back to his toys as soon as she did

One thing about puppies for sure is that they can make it almost impossible to go to work.

Rolling around on the floor with them when you get home from work is incredible, though. What joy! I feel sorry for kids who never had that. And the adults who do are among the luckier ones out there.

So glad my parents always had dogs when I was growing up and I can't see us ever being at the point of not having at least one dog at the house..

We had one of those when I was a kid, and it was really a cool dog. Acted like a big dog, maybe partly because we didn't raise it as a whiny little lap dog. I seem to remember reading that, since then, they've been bred into a more bitey dog that isn't a good one to have around tiny children. Could be wrong, just came to mind.

Mostly I'm a big dog guy, though. Can't stand the yippity yippity yip or the frequent diarrhea of the little ones, and am not that big a fan of their fragility, either. I think if I got a Pomeranian, I would still consider myself as not having a dog yet.

I had a few collies and a golden retriever as a kid but they were all on my grandparent's farm.

The dog I have now I found with an ex-gf from the time she was 6 months old. We found her running around our neighborhood and adopted her which was weirdly almost fate-like as we were looking for a dog at the time. She's a german shepherd cross type dog, pretty much a mutt but she's the smartest dog I've ever seen. My uncle trains hunting dogs and I own a pet waste removal service (yes I own a pooper scooper biz) so I've seen my share of dogs.

She hit 14 years old last month which sucks because I know the inevitable is getting closer and closer. She has arthritis in her hips and limps a bit after she tries to run too hard. She has totally verified that I have issues with acknowledging death as I often find myself damn near crying when I think about her dying because she was by far the best dog I've owned.

be careful with this. you don't want a dog with separation anxiety. congrats though....

I had kinda been thinking this too. Sometimes it's good to let them yap a little, otherwise they wind up being the ones training you.

It's certainly not something that would regularly happen.. She's just a softy and couldn't leave him on the first day..

Orange guy wrecked the complimentary cardboard cat carrier on my way home. He is a little terror. Carries around toys in his mouth so I figure he's a good mouser though. Calico is uber lap cat.

Anyway, re: getting along. I read to not get 2 females so I didn't. The first couple days he would walk up to her trying to headbutt her and she would just hiss at him. "lol girls" I thought. But the last several weeks he just all out attacks her and she has to seek high ground like an ironing board. At first it was mildly amusing but now going on 5 weeks it's like wtf. I know it's best to keep them in opposite rooms during the introduction phase but my apartment isn't really conducive to that. Anything else I can do or do some cats just not get along?

It's no crime to give one back. Better than having them traumatize each other. And there's always another cat to take, too, if you feel guilty returning one.

I don't mean to sound heartless, but sometimes cats can develop really strong dislikes of each other and stress each other out a lot even if there's no fighting. If it were me, I'd just accept that and then take the next step. You'll never run out of cats to save, so you don't have to choose above all others one that is screwing up the deal for another pet.

I agree and try another cat. My brothers little tyke cant be around dogs it will rip them to shreds. Just the personailty of cats. After 2-3 weeks they should be getting along. Like the top one the best
