She's mellow at night, but gets pretty damn spun up when I get home from work. When she plays she plays hard, but after you take her toys away or end playtime she's pretty good except for the occasional pissed off bark at me if I'm grinding poker and not paying attention to her lol

Thanks, Blarg. She went downhill fast, and I had her put to sleep today. She was a great cat, very charismatic, very loving. I was lucky to get to share 16 years with her.

Damn that those things have to happen. My condolences kioshk.

damn Blarg you make me really jealous, I myself didnd't had any pet so far because my mom really doens't like the precense of animals, she's afraid of them.

It's a bummer when your family won't let you have pets. Those kids are missing out. A lot, IMO. It helps to learn as young as possible to be responsible and care for any life form, and the more and more varied there are, the better the lesson.

Thanks for the nice comments guys, we moved out here with 2 springer spaniels and they were poisoned within a year of being here and trying to do mouth to mouth with 2 dying dogs really put the buffer on the pet ownership scenario especially as it cost me close to $5k in legal bills after they were killed (long tr possible on that one) added to the same again shipping them over form the UK.

However, getting Poppy has been the best thing ever and even though she has hated us over the last couple of days since being spayed she is still great.

This sounds like a very sad but very interesting story. When you feel like spilling the beans, I'm sure we'll all want to pull up a chair.

I remember a neighbor's dog getting poisoned with strychnine back when I was a kid. Not pretty.

First off, condolences to those who lost pets recently. I know what that's like.

Just thought I'd post an update on my dog. Thanks to Blarg for the advice. This was Nutmeg when we got her...about nine or ten weeks old.



This is The Nut yesterday...about six months old and she weighs a little over thirty pounds.



She does pretty good with other dogs...she's been through puppy obedience school and now she's doing dog obedience school. She's not afraid of anything yet. They put the dogs through a big plastic tunnel, and some dogs won't go....even the two American bulldogs and the German Shepherd wouldn't go at first. Nutmeg did it no problem. She's very friendly to strangers, and loves to pee when she gets excited....but she's growing out of that. She hasn't torn up hardly anything in the house, except for my laptop power cord that cost me $60 to replace. Yeesh.

We took her camping for Memorial weekend. She had a blast. There were four other dogs that we let her roam around with. They made fast friends. She got to play in the river by our campsite (wish I had some pictures) and get her paws wet. She did venture out too far in the river once and had to swim a bit to get to safer ground. She wore herself out so much with running around that she didn't hardly do anything on the last day. At dinner one night, one of the other dogs (named Spencer) made off with most of my friend's steak when he put it on the ground. Naturally, my friends that own Spencer are vegetarians, so Spencer was tasting REAL MEAT for the first time I'll bet. No more veggie bacon for that dog. We did take Nutmeg's crate with us when we went camping, but it was pretty cold up there....so we let her sleep with us some. She'd bite my ears to wake me up.

We figure Nutmeg will get to be about 40-45 pounds fully grown. We were originally told that she is Australian Shepherd, but vets have told us she's got more Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog in her. Doesn't matter much to us though. Her crate training is working out awesome. She hasn't messed in the house in weeks. She's a good dog. We take her as many places as we can to get her used to people and other dogs. She likes Lowe's.....so much that last time we took her, she peed all over the floor inside. Her favorite toy is the basket we put the rest of her toys in....go figure. My wife and I are really looking forward to finishing dog obedience training and maybe putting her in agility classes.

Agility is a huge commitment but incredibly fun. And it's healthy too; you can't do much agility without running around a lot. It's a perfect solution for keeping smart and highly work-oriented herding dogs stimulated and exercised enough not to go nuts in the house. And it's an intense communication experience that really bonds dog and owner.

If you go to a lot of shows, the costs can mount up after a while. But if you mostly just train on your own, it's not too bad. It's really a hell of a lot of fun, overall.

Obedience is cool too, but not as exciting. Still, it's more difficult than one would think. One of the things they do is make the dog lie still for a while. That's pretty damn hard for most dogs to do. Another dog goes by, or an interesting smell, and they lurch up and queer the whole deal. Or take a pee. It's not hard in an onerous way, but it can be kind of intense, in that you really want everything to work out and sometimes the tiniest thing can ruin the whole trial. Really good for helping to build that bond between master and dog IMO, though. Any dog can love you, but learning to really communicate with you on other than a purely emotional level is harder.

Good luck on your progress. Sounds like things are working out really nicely for you and your dog.

Can't wait for work to end today.. Going to get my first puppy as an adult.. Grew up with a bunch of dogs, including a couple golden retrievers so it was a pretty easy choice when looking for my first dog.. We went and saw him yesterday, buying him today right after work

I have two stories about Lozen RIP Oct /08

1) She was barking like nuts on the corner of the deck at 11:00 PM. I went outside to tell her to be quiet. She was barking and looking at my neighbors deck. I said Ok I will go look before I got there a guy came from under the deck with a crowbar and ran. Turns out my neighbors were on holidays and guy was trying to break in. Neighbors very happy for Lozen

2) I was watching TV and had some candles on. I went up to the loft/office to check something on my computer. I had been there a bit when Lozen comes upstairs looks at me runs downstairs. She did this again and barked at me and ran back down barking. I say ok ill get your toy unstuck. Came downstairs and there is a fire in the corner flames 3 ft . Quickly put it out. A candle had split in half and started the Entertainment unit on fire.

Another story. These people moved in beside me and never walked there dog. Kept it in the garage in a crate at night and backyard by day. I asked if they minded if I could take him to the dog park with Lozen. They were happy to let me. After that he came with us every day. When Lozen died I asked if they would sell him. I knew with winter coming it would be tough for them. They would not and I liked his breed so much I got a mini Golden doodle 7 months old and named her Piper. Two months later the neighbors asked if I still wanted to buy him. I wasnt sure as he was bigger and two dogs seemed like alot. I asked what they would do if i did not take him? They told me than they would keep him. I took him instantly. Now I have two golden doodles Piper and Ziva.

We took Lozen's ashes and spread them on a mound overlooking her favorite pond
