He did finally come by and I got a look at him. The swelling is down but there's a thumbprint-sized chunk missing out of that arm. I still want to intervene with antibiotics or something, but if I were to manage to trap him he becomes property of the Humane Society and I have to apply to adopt him (if they deem him adoptable, which I doubt).

Other cat is also a foundling. This one came looking for a home around the same time and found one. She started to turn up at 9:00, leave at 5:00, then stayed later and later until we kept her in overnight when the weather turned cold. Eventually we put a collar on her with a note asking who she belonged to and no one wrote back (or removed the collar), and she was ours.
She's incredibly loving, a pretty good hunter, and kind of a punk.
