Oh yeah, I forgot about the weird time travel coda. I thought it was there to establish a plot device that they were thinking about introducing to make the Enterprise a time machine as well as a space machine, but dropped. It does prefigure the time travel premise in Star Trek 4, though.

It may not make sense to accept some science in the ST universe and question others, but...

While I do accept things like Warp Drive, or even the Heisenberg Compensator on the transporters... How slingshotting around the sun can both send you back in time several hundred years and send you forward several hundred years (based on the direction you travel???) always annoyed me. It's the 1 thing that really irked me about ST4. Maybe it belongs in the OOT thread "things that shouldn't piss you off, but do"

The Enemy Within SEASON 1, EPISODE 05

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ene...iginal_Series)

Wow, this first season is really hitting them out of the park. An absolutely terrific episode, with an excellent central premise, and a script that is really first-class (by Richard Matheson - I should have guessed). Especially, I think, for the character of Mr Spock. The whole Kirk being split between the primal, violent side and the cerebral side is just fantastic. The bad Kirk wears too much mascara, gets all rapey with Yoeman Rand, and bites chunks out of the scenery with relish.

Oh and the scoring in this episode is spectacular.

I have to say it again, this is the best episode so far.

Also: STILL NO DEAD RED SHIRTS SO FAR!

To put it in my list of order of how much I liked it:

Top.-
The Enemy Within (S1E05)
The Naked Time (S1E04)
Charlie X (S1E02)
Where No Man Has Gone Before (S1E03)
The Man Trap (S1E01)

I almost jumped at a TOS on bluray set of amazon($54 shipped)... I waited a day and all of a sudden it was back up to $100+.

Re: Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives

I don't think The Enemy Within was better than The Naked Time or Charlie X, but still, it's a classic episode and a great example of using sci-fi to tell stories about human nature. This sci-fi version of Jekyll and Hyde is a clever premise that Will Shatner's acting chops are, frankly, not really able to pull off.

The scene where (the evil) Kirk sexually assaults Yeoman Rand, and the later scene where Rand reluctantly confronts Kirk must have really been pushing the envelope for TV in the 1960s. I don't know if I've seen other shows from the period address these kinds of themes.

This episode also gives us the most adorable space creature ever:

Misc: Why do they beam the space doggy onto the ship? Is that standard practice for the Enterprise? It just seems like a bad idea to beam aboard alien life forms. Have none of them seen Alien?

Re: Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives

I have a suggestion for this thread. We watch one episode of star trek a week for the next like ten years or whatever? From TOS to Enterprise. I'm on board if a few others are.

Well at that rate it's actually 13.5 years. Would be willing to watch 2 episodes a week.

Although we'd get many dropouts through DS9 and Voyager. I view Voyager as a throw away mostly, and DS9 and Enterprise as the highlights of the series. I've completely disregarded TOS and would love to see where it stands.

Re: Star Trek Thread: To Boldly Split Infinitives

Can we skip all the Wesley episodes from ST:TNG season one to save time? Here is my review of them:

They all ****ing suck. The only good part is where Wesley gets sentenced to death for walking on the grass. And that turned out to just be a tease. But Will Wheaton is a cool guy, though. It's not his fault his character sucked.

No man. Actually watching every miserable episode of TNG would help us get a reasonable ranking of the series. Like after watching a TNG episode and a DS9 episode alternating for both series you would be hard-pressed to rand TNG>DS9

Is that what you're doing? I've read the whole thread and didn't realize that. But we should have like a schedule or something.

I actually think a better format might be first episode of each series, then the second, then the third, etc.

Perusing TNG season 2, Up The Long Ladder, Peak Performance, A Matter of Honor, and Time Squared are all not bad iirc

Watched this today. For quite a while I was expecting to see Kirk in a
mirror universe aboard a parallel Enterprise run by ruthless barbarians.

Got it mixed up with "Mirror Mirror" from season two.

Disregarding TOS is unforgivable for a Star Trek fan. Also, don't sleep on Voyager completely. The last few episodes and ending are solid. Watching through all of TOS and TNG sounds like a doable plan.

Mudd's Women SEASON 1, EPISODE 06

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudd's_Women

Yeah, this is the first goofy episode of the season, and not particularly entertaining, subtle or even that interesting. Harry Mudd is great as a character, but the plot, contrived drama and ham-fisted approach to the message it's pushing mean it's not great. Having said that, it's still fun to watch, but it's definitely a minor episode.

I had to laugh how, even without the makeup, the brunette still looked pretty damn good, so the director got her to pull an ugly face to get around that.
