I forgot to mention this is the last episode with Dr. Pulaski. Pretty ridiculous send-off for a main character.

True, I hadn't considered this, although it's plausible that the contracts were sorted between S2 and 3 considering the audience feedback.

Still, it is kinda of surprising she never popped up in any trek spin-offs - it's not like the producers ever miss an opportunity to shoe-horn much lesser characters into a storyline (DS9 season 1 has just started on CBS in the UK, and there are many examples there - Vash and Q episode being a particularly bad example).

3 seasons on LA Law after STNG. Not much in her resume after that.

Had nothing to do with contracts or audience feedback. Diana Muldaur absolutely hated working on the show and swore that not only wouldn't she return, but that she would never work in SciFi again.

The clips of old episodes were memories Riker was having while in a coma. To your point about it being a bad episode, weren't some of the clips things that didn't even involve Riker and there's no way he could've know it even happened? It's been awhile since I've seen that one so correct me if I'm wrong.

Lot's of tv shows do clip shows at some point. Usually a sign they've started running out of ideas IMO. Most of the time it's NOT in the second season though.

Close, but I'd have to go with Skin of Evil. Coincidentally, it is running right this minute on BBC. I had forgotten how absolutely horrible this episode really was.

Up till now, I would have put Spock's Brain as the WOAT ST episode, but I think the clip show has surpassed it.

Shades of Gray is by far the lowest rated episode of all the Trek series on IMDB - it got a 3.3. The next worst episode of all the series got a 5.0.

They're coming out with a new Star Trek TV series in 2017 that will premiere on CBS and then go to their streaming CBS All Access channel.

http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...s-january-2017

The quote from the press release that got me hyped was:

Quote:
The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
And apparently it will not be related to the reboot Star Trek movie series with Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, etc. Though they haven't said if it will be in the original timeline or the reboot movie timeline.

If I am reading this right it looks like every episode after the premier will only be available on cbs streaming service? Not on national TV?

It troubles me that the writer of the two reboot scripts will be the executive producer of the series...

Yeah that is a bit worrying but with so much high quality TV being produced now I'm optimistic that they will come up with something that plays up the series strengths as a TV series, rather than the shallow action movies that the JJ Abrams films have been. I'm sure they want this show to be the next Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. and will treat it as such.

I predict massive failure for cbs' streaming service and in turn this show, unfortunately. People will only subscribe to so many services. People with netflix, hbo go, amazon prime, etc. will not buy into this.

Kinda hyped, but I cut my cable ages ago and I'm not buying a new service just for one show.

Cautiously pessimistic, mainly because of the channel (CBS WTF). But obviously as a fan I hope it's good and takes off.

Also, anybody watch the The Animated Series? I'm working my way through it now. I know some lists of best ST episodes across all variants include some animated ones, so curious if you guys have partaken.

I did. I covered it in here, right after I covered the original series.

I remember the animated episode where Spock relives his childhood on Vulcan and the one with the tribbles as being a lot of fun to watch. The writers were able to do things with animation that the effects budget of TOS didn't allow them to do.

Yup. Not coincidentally that's when Roddenberry was no longer involved.

Was Roddenberry just out of touch with modern star trek times?

He just had an insane set of rules for the writers to follow on TNG. Like, there couldn't be conflict among the crew. HOW CAN YOU HAVE A DRAMATIC TV SHOW WITH NO CONFLICT AMONG MAIN CHARACTERS????
