The thing with season one is that they didn't have red uniforms for some of the early episodes, so a lot of the disposable guys were wearing yellow instead --we've seen quite a lot of yellow-shirt guys get their ticket punched.

I predict that we'll see far more redshirt casualties in seasons 2-3.

The Squire of Gothos is my favorite episode thus far. It's a fun, speculative sci-fi episode and well-written to boot. The dude who plays The Squire just has so much fun throwing himself into the role. He's clearly the inspiration for Q in TNG.

The only real downside is that the "immature being with godlike powers" thing gets kinda played-out in season one.

OH, yeah, The Squire of Gothos is the metaphorical parent of Q indeed. And I do think the courtroom scene in SoG was a huge influence on the Star Trek:TNG pilot, Encounter at Farpoint, and how Q acted.

Is Trelane part of the Q continuum, do you think?

EDIT: Just googled, and apparently there's a non-canon ST fiction book called Q-Squared where Trelane is identified as part of the Q.

I think the franchise needs movies based on the deuteragonist... with the protagonists, star fleet, being relegated to a lower order of importance.

say a movie where the Klingon ideology is fully flushed out and made sympathetic... or the Q for instance.

A show/movie from the Klingon perspective in the TOS timeline would be cool. I think "Harvey Mudd: Space Pimp" would be a brilliant show, but that'll never happen.

Arena SEASON 1, EPISODE 18

Like most humans, I seem to have an instinctive revulsion to reptiles.

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena_(...iginal_Series)

An episode of 3 distinct parts, first part with the Trek guys on an outpost devastated by an attack, the a chase across space for an enemy craft, and then Kirk being thrown in a fight to the death with the iconic Gorn. This is a rather fine episode, keeping up the tension with its twists and turns, culminating in an exciting mano-e-lizardoo battle between Kirk and the Gorn. When I saw this as a kid I thought the Gorn looked spectacular, but, you know, you can see the zip on this one. But hell, you let your suspension of disbelief work overtime on this, because the episode is so much fun.

The Gorn was voiced very nicely by Ted Cassidy, btw. I also like the resolution, although, like a lot of the best Trek, the concept presented is an old scifi chestnut these days. Though when I was a kid and saw this, I didn't like the fact the Gorn seemed to be getting away with killing innocent people. Now I'm a cynical adult, I know that that's how life is, sometimes.

Which reminds me, check this fake trailer for the book "Night of the Living Trekkies". NSFW by the way (and very gory)

Not a bad read actually, entertaining pulp. Zombies erupt at a Star Trek Convention.

Tomorrow Is Yesterday SEASON 1, EPISODE 19

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomorrow_Is_Yesterday

When you hear Star Trek discussed in terms of "the one where...", this is "the one where they go back in time...no not that one, the other one..."

Not a fan of this one. You go no lead-in at all to explain the Enterprise in 1969, and the fact they used the contemporary time setting makes this episode feels very dated compared to the others. It's feels a little dull and lacks tension. The bits where they are trying to grill Kirk, and he doesn't give a ****, have no drama whatsoever. And the comedy reaction of the guard when he ends up on the Enterprise aren't funny. And where did he get that uniform, from the Man From Uncle wardrobe department?

Also, Spock pretty much works out time travel and then it's never mentioned much again. Are you kidding me?

Apparently intended to be the second part of a two-parter with "The Naked Time", but they changed the production order, which explains the odd end to that episode about time-warps.

It's not bad, but it's flat and feels like the sort of coasting episode you get 2 or 3 before the end of a really long season.

The reworked SF look terrific in this one, by the way.

So I've been falling behind in my Star Trek watching. In brevia:

The Arena
is ST at its campy best. There's just nothing like a William Shatner fight scene, especially with a guy in a rubber suit. Last episode with Ted Cassidy, which is too bad, because he did a bang-up job in the episodes he was in. Why doesn't the bamboo tube blow up in his hands? Because he's the goddamn captain, that's why.

Tomorrow is Yesterday is a DC Fontana episode (the first one, I think), which usually means good things. This was a solid sci-fi premise that just wasn't executed well, possibly because it was originally supposed to be a two-parter. It's watchable, but it just sorta drags, and there are like dozens of better Trek episodes that involve time travel.

Court Martial SEASON 1, EPISODE 20

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_M...iginal_Series)

I liked this one way more than I expected. I remember not liking this one when I was a kid, because, you know, they put Captain Kirk on trial. Kirk? That seemed stupid to me.

However, rewatching, it actually is quite an engaging drama, though it of course the premise is more straightforward 60s courtroom TV than Trek, it works pretty well. Its pacing is a little off too, as they have to cut/monologue near the end to make sure they finish in time, and still let Kirk save the ship single-handed. I do like the lawyer invoking everything from the Magna Carta through to the Martian Declaration of Independence (or whatever it was). And Kirk is a proper pimp when he kisses the opposing lawyer on the deck in front of the crew. I bet Uhura wanted him.

Yeah, I hadn't realised Ted Cassidy was so prominent in several episodes. First acting in What Are Little Girls Made Of, the voice of Balok, then the Gorn. Nice work, Ted!

And still had time to be a pop star...

Captain Kirk to command new Navy destroyer

Quote:
Captain James Kirk, the prospective commanding officer of USS Zumwalt, will lead the 610-foot vessel, the Navy's largest destroyer and first of three new Zumwalt-class ships "designed for littoral operations and land attack," the Navy said.

Kirk, a native of Bethesda, Md., was commissioned at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1990 and has served in a variety posts as a "surface warfare officer," according to his online bio. "Ashore, Captain Kirk has served as Executive Assistant to the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs and as an Action Officer on the Joint Staff."

Return of the Archons SEASON 1, EPISODE 21

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Return_of_the_Archons

More reusing the back-lot of other productions, and the wardrobe department too, as the crew investigate a weird society where there is stagnant progress and oddities in behaviour.

Okay, another old scifi chestnut of a computer running a society, and the society stagnating because of lack of creativity, but I did enjoy this one. I liked how even Spock acknowledged creativity is the seed of progress, but I wish there'd been something in there where Spock discusses how the essentially illogical creative act reconciles with his own logic-based society. There were some baggy parts for sure, but I liked the thrust of the whole episode. It felt (loosely) like a tract about maybe religious/politicial dogmatism and cultism, but unintentionally so.

Space Seed SEASON 1, EPISODE 22

Wiki Entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Seed

Well, we get to the only single episode of a TV show that has a sequel that's a movie. And that movie is the best of the Star Trek movies....

Solid episode, and I'm not entirely sure if it's a classic in its own right, or has been elevated by its association with Wrath of Khan... whatever, it's a damn fine episode, and Montalban is magnificent as the magnificent Khan. Very well written, and - like Conscience of the King - has some themes echoing the consideration of Nazism/eugenics in world history.

Hell, I'm calling it: Classic.
