Raid Redemption

This film has been mentioned in the Movies thread but it was so impressive I think it needs it's own thread.

I haven't been this impressed by a modern martial arts movie since Ong Bak. It's Indonesian so subtitles are necessary.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1899353/

Calling it a martial arts movie doesn't do it justice either since it features some gunfights alongside numerous knife fights and unarmed fighting.

The choreography was just incredible. I've seen tons of martial arts films. Classic Shaw Bros. films , wuxia films of all kinds , the more modern Jackie Chan , Sammo Hung and Jet Li classics and I was completely blown away by this film.

The martial art featured in the film is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencak_Silat and it's fairly brutal and uses varieties of weapons.

If I was paid enough cash I'd fight a Judo master knowing I'd probably get my shirt ripped and get thrown to the floor pretty hard but no amount of cash would get me to fight someone proficient in this art. I'd probably get several bones broken before hitting the floor and then they'd break my neck for good measure.

If more Westerners watched foreign martial arts films I think they'd realize just how bad some of the Hollywood action films really are. The over editing in them and shifting of camera angles is just so horrendous you can barely see anything. The 1st Bourne movie gave me a headache just watching it and I'm sure a lot of Western audiences would consider that a good action movie.

If you're into action and martial arts movies this is a must see.

True, but I found that to be a tad too long.

My favorite was the one where he secured a whole floor by himself and rescued the other guy.

Re: Raid Redemption

The director is planning on turning this movie into a trilogy and a hollywood re-make is already being written. (I imagine it will star Jason Stathom, and will suck)

The sequel is called Berandal

Here's the trailer:

Mine too because it involved more weapon fighting than the 2v1 scene.

Even the gunplay scenes were great though too and that 2 or 3 story fall onto the concrete railing of the stairwell was just brutal.

It really is pathetic that Hollywood feels the need to remake these great foreign films. As far as I'm concerned if you can't enjoy a great movie in it's original language with subtitles , you're a waste of space.

I can understand a 13 yr old kid not wanting to read subtitles , I didn't at the time but for adults it's a shame.

I'm not sure if it's most Americans are incapable of appreciating these films with subtitles or if Hollywood is convinced they do. Either way , whatever Hollywood comes up with will pale in comparison to the original.

It probably boils down to money of course. They believe they can make more by releasing new versions than somehow showcasing them in their original language in the US and Canada.
