Re: Prometheus: The Spoiler-Ridden thread to discuss the Big Ideas
SO jesus was an alien, and because we killed him the aliens are going to wipe us out.
But before they do something happens (what?) that kills off all of them except for one. Apparently human beings killing Jesus-Alien made that black stuff toxic, while if we had made love to him the black stuff would... do something awesome? We saw the dead bodies of the aliens that were killed by... whatever. But not the remains of what killed them. So they breathed the black crap and died?
Now that black crap is chilling in it's weird vases for 2k years but still works. Well made crap that is... Damn. I notice there were no warning labels on them.
So this one that did not die instead of going to earth to kill all the humans (which sounds like fun) decides to go into hyper sleep for a few thousand years instead, not home to his girlfriend, house illegetimate child and spacedog, no just to hypersleep, and when he wakes up he decides to kill all the humans after his little nap.
What was David's motivation? Severely lacking.
The combination of Human and Black crap turned into the worlds biggest ****ing face hugger ever. It also couldn't be killed by the decontamination unit? Damn that thing is tough.
Face hugger +Engineer=perfect killing machine cool. I take it this has been seen before by the Engineers?
Just lots of random BS ensconcing itself in mystical BS
Re: Prometheus: The Spoiler-Ridden thread to discuss the Big Ideas
Finally got a chance to see it: Okay but completely forgettable.
I wish I found it interesting enough to dig in to all of the the finer points like people ITT, but the writing was super-shallow and the plot sucked too bad to over analyze anything. The characters were boring too. I hope Theron's character was an android because that would at least give some excuse for her lifeless character, but it seems a little odd considering her thing for Stringer Bell.
The whole story felt rushed and thrown together, and the handful of attempted dramabombs just fell flat or seemed hokey - 2000 years, really? Old guy on board? The movie looked okay (sounded okay, etc) and the rest seemed to work, but someone should have tossed that script or at least sent it back for a couple more heavy revisions. It felt more like a Red Planet sequel than something that belonged in the Alien franchise with Ridley Scott's name on it.
Caveat: I'm not an especially huge fan of his movies, though I generally like them more than not.
Re: Prometheus: The Spoiler-Ridden thread to discuss the Big Ideas
Is it pretty much a sure thing that this is the first installment of a trilogy? The whole movie just seemed to me like the first episode of a miniseries. I liked it but I'm pretty easy to please with stuff like this, assuming that there are sequels coming that delve more into the story and answer some questions.
The one plot hole that bothers me the most has been asked a bunch of times here and elsewhere. Why would the engineers leave a map to a military installment and not the home planet? Maybe it was a warning by a group of "good" engineers? Maybe at one point it was the home planet but they had to evacuate? I just hope the writers have a story behind this and it wasn't just a major blunder.
I can easily suspend disbelief and ignore nitty stuff (questioning why the geologist became a zombie contortionist) if the major plot is intriguing and fun.
Right now I'm leaning towards the idea of two groups of engineers: benevolent creaters and evil destroyers. That would help explain the difference between the ship in the opening sequence and the one on the alien planet. Although I guess one could just be a warship and the other a scientific vessel.
Anyway, I enjoyed it as entertainment and will definitely see the sequels if they come.
Re: Prometheus: The Spoiler-Ridden thread to discuss the Big Ideas
I've been reading the Reddit discussion thread and have gotten more and more irritated by how many dumb script decisions were made, but it is a testament to the quality of the film that I'd still go see it again.
One thing I am uber frustrated that was not used to directly connect Prometheus to Alien is having the Space Jockey/Engineer end up being the same Jockey they find at the beginning of Alien.

Like the WTF moment of the zombie scientist appearing at the ship.
i really enjoyed watching Prometheus, but the more I think about it the more I get actively pissed off. They put so much attention into the visuals and clearly didn't care about fixing the gaping plot holes and logical inconsistencies. What could have been just amazing was instead visually stunning and intellectually frustrating.

Dom, thought you would appreciate this quote from the Reddit discussion thread:

Shaw's faith is so strong that despite her God being defined as He who created humans on Earth, her answer to "well, it seems that aliens have created us, not God, and it seems that they're from another solar system at that..." is simply "But who created them??" It's not "Well, I guess there must be another God," or "I guess that since everything said about my God I have proven false, I should do some deep thinking about this issue...". It's just "**** you, my straw man fallacy spans solar systems."
