I remember thinking it looked completely ameteurish. Apart from that I didn't find the story particularly compelling either. All in all, I was left kind of dumbfounded by its reputation.
When I played basketball in middle school, our coach would constantly talk about Hoosiers. He obsessed about it, but as 11 and 12 year-olds, we had never seen the movie.
After regular season had ended, we got together to watch it before our first playoff game. He gave his speech in the locker room and then put in the tape.
As we watched the movie, we realized that every drill we had ever run, our coach stole from the montage in the movie. Every speech he had ever gave us, was stolen straight from Gene Hackman.
Needless to say, none of us ever gave him any credit for being a good coach again and he kind of felt like a tool when he realized how much he lifted straight from the film.
Not that impressive of a movie, btw.
