Re: Poll: Chicago vs. New York-style Pizza
lou malnati's deep dish is probably better food than the best NY slice. not going to get into the debate over what is and what isn't pizza
I love NY style though. I love real Italian style even more though. best pizza I ever had was at a place called "Dar Poeta" in Rome.

Lived in Chicago area almost all my life. The years I was out of state sucked because the food (pizza, beef, dogs) was always so much worse.

Def this, Giordano's is also always good if you don't mind the chain aspect of it (although I guess lous is also a chain).
Being a biased Chicagoan i definitely prefer Chicago style, I honestly think 80% of thin crust pizzas out there taste like cardboard. NYC is by far the best of any thin crust I have had, though.

I like the city of Chicago, but this is NYC in a landslide in my opinion.

Re: Poll: Chicago vs. New York-style Pizza
it's also a hard question to answer because, I imagine all of us have managed to find some 'authentic' NYC pizza, even if we haven't been to NYC, but ask any chicagoan who loves deep dish and they will literally only tell you one or two places (basically with Lou Malnati's always being one of them). as I said, NYC pizza is awesome, so if your chicago experiences are with some famous trash like Gino's East then you won't be voting unbiasedly. level of difficultly on chicago deep dish is much higher than on NYC style, so there's only a few places that really nail it
lou's (which is a chain) and burt's place (in suburb of chicago) are my favorites

My Chicago experience was Gino's East. Major error from the sound of it

Re: Poll: Chicago vs. New York-style Pizza
I am a bonafide pizzaholic but as a Chicagoan I have to go Chicago! Chicago deepdish is a true treat but something I don't want all of the time. It's more of a special occassion kind of thing for me. I prefer the thin crust pizza in Chicago which I consider the best in the world. But New York style? Those big floppy, greasy wedges? No thanks! Thats my least favorite kind of any pizza ever. I'd take Dominos or Pizza Hut over that crap and we all know any local type pizzaria is better than that chain crap.
But after having lived in the midwest, both coasts, and the south as well as traveling the world multiple times a typical local Chicago thincrust is the best pizza in the world.

NYC, I don't like the crust as much in Chicago. That being said overall Chicago has excellent food but NYC has the best restaurants in the states.

Re: Poll: Chicago vs. New York-style Pizza

Re: Poll: Chicago vs. New York-style Pizza
I also like both and give the edge to NYC, but I definitely prefer a thicker crust than the crunchy, cardboard-y stuff one can often find, especially if it's so crunchy that it hurts my mouth to eat. I also subscribe to the "less is more" camp, and find pizzas with fresh ingredients and herbs so that one can taste the quality of each component the most satisfying.
But isn't the NY vs Chicago argument sort of like asking if we prefer chocolate cake or chocolate ice cream? Both have many similar ingredients and satisfy the same appetite, but they're so different fundamentally that they really should belong to two separate categories of food. Picking one style of pizza over the other doesn't really say a whole lot either about the pizza or the person.

Re: Poll: Chicago vs. New York-style Pizza
NY pizza, those huge slices that you fold in half is just wrong.
True Chicago deep dish can be good, but it almost isn't pizza.
I'll take thin crust with just enough bulk to hold an impressive amount of toppings, please:

Used to fly into Chicago a couple of times a year for meetings. The pizza made even Cubs fans bearable.
