Winkler was completely overshadowed by Michael Keaton and it ironically turned Keaton into a movie star instead of him.

And of course, a further irony is that Henry Winkler's character in Happy Days was an extremely minor side character at the beginning of the show and he ended up being the star of the show.
I came very close to choosing Billy "Blaze" Blazjowski He was penciled in as a must have but for one reason or another I didn't take him.

Clearly a character that carried the entire movie by himself. Keaton was absolutely hilarious and the only thing that makes the movie worth watching again and again and again.

This might be a fun draft. I was thinking of doing characters all by one actor. When I considered Gary Oldman, half of his roles could have made a "steals the movie" list.

OK R*R, I watched The Great Escape. I put my review in the movie watching thread. You may lose a bit of respect for me after reading my review though

What'd you think of Drinking Buddies?

The terrifying plausibility of this role tempted me to pick another character I found terrifyingly plausible -- that of Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I was forced to resist the urge for other reasons, yet there is something to say for plausibilty.

Nobody can play a complete self-righteous ***** like Louise Fletcher.

Just watched Buckaroo Banzai, and it was a trip. As far as campy 80s scifi goes it's one of the better ones I've seen, mostly because of its self awareness. Pretty great cast, but iffy plot. Can't believe it escaped my attention all these years.

I was pretty close to pulling the trigger on Harvey. I was going to try for ten top characters who we never actually get to see -- Harvey, Sean Regan, Keyser Söze -- who else?

The Maltese Falcon? Not really a character, though. Rosemary's Baby? George Kaplan doesn't really exist, but he's central to North By Northwest. The ghosts who may or may not exist in The Innocents. Thinking of films like Rebecca in which the title character is dead. We only get to see the backs of two main characters of In the Mood for Love.

Rebecca is the classic example. Not only does she never appear, but they named the movie after her.

Very good thread, really good picks. But unfortunately I think possibly the greatest character of all time was overlooked, for sure the greatest one in a western. I suppose because it was made for the small screen and not the big one, but at 385 minutes where else is it going to work...?

Spoiler:

Yeah, Lonesome Dove was the best thing on TV in the 80s, if you ask me, and Robert Duvall's performance as retired Texas Ranger Augustus McCrae was the best thing in it. The miniseries won 14 Emmys and 4 Golden Globes, and the novel won the Pulitzer prize, so if you haven't had a chance to watch the movie or read the book you should. It's simply amazing.

Not a lot of it on YouTube unfortunately, here are some good ones though...

Not long after it was made Duvall was on Letterman and Dave congratulated him on the performance. Duvall said, "The English can keep King Lear and all that Shakespeare, as far as I'm concerned I'd take Augustus McCrae over all of it any day of the week!"

I mean we did specify movie characters...

otherwise the 1st round would have looked alot different imo.

ppl like tony soprano and al swrengen (or however u spell his name) would've been snatched up quickly.

not sure if made for tv movie characters were eligible or not.
