And they're both blind! It's a great love story, how they met in Africa at a school for the blind. This is a great song of theirs, La Realite, produced by the great Manu Chao:

The first half of this video was a staple of all of the NRBQ shows that I saw in the 80's and early 90's.
Aaaaah, The Q. Steely Dan for enlightened rednecks. If no-talent purveyors of aural feces like Carrie Underwood and Kenny Chesney had been listening to NRBQ instead of The Eagles and the Jimmy Buffett...well, they'd still be no-talent purveyors of aural feces, but at least the world would be a shade more interesting.

This is a clip from the show Night Music, in which pianist Terry Adams seriously gets his Sun Ra on...

Incidentally, Night Music was a Lorne Michaels-produced show that used to run on weekends, and featured lesser known, newer, and cult musical artist, and frequently had them playing together.

Sonic Youth
Jeff Healey with Dr. John
Miles
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Kronos Quartet
Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Maria McKee
Pixies
MJQ
John Cale, Shawn Colvin, and Richard Thompson (doing Cale's arrangement of "Heartbreak Hotel")
Richard Thompson and Jo-El Sonnier
The Night Music house band with Maria McKee, Van Dyke Parks, and Stevie Ray Vaughn doing Little Feat's Sailing Shoes

Lotsa stuff on YouTube. Also, not from Night Music, but too funky not to be heard. Note to Lillith Fair devotees: this is what a real woman sounds like.

Mavis Staples

Rants, because I've been gone for awhile

Sarah McClachlan? Please. Makes me want to strangle a puppy, on GP. Please, someone shove a rag in that drippy ****'s mouth..

The difference between Kings of Leon and the Jonas Brothers is one of taste, not degree. Buy the hype if you wish.

Dear Lord, Switchfoot and the Fray still walk the Earth, and the Creed is coming back. Please, show us your love and mercy by smiting these and similar bands into the dust, as you really don't want your good name being associated with that smug and shallow horse****.

That said, the Thrice tracks which were posted were surprisingly good.

Actually, LOTS of good stuff mentioned in this thread. Today I have listened to My Morning Jacket Evil Urges, Guns 'n' Roses Appetite for Destruction (just read the biography...AFD holds up far better than I thought it might...yeah, "Rocket Queen" is stupid, but it's gloriously so), and a single sampler disc I made from Eric Dolphy's Prestige box set.

Them Crooked Vultures: Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones, and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Really good! Like a newspaper headline I just saw,"Supergroup really is super."

They sound a little like Cream, seriously.

Re: Music: What are you listening to today?

Lots of different stuff (all a couple of years old):

Electronic:

Autechre - Doctrine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfcHBv9xkPE

You gotta pay attention to the song, sit comfortable, close your eyes, go with the flow. The Album Incunabula is the fkking nuts!!!

-----------------

Alternative rock:

Vast - Touched

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIAiLGpEPHI

The siren voices later in the song r sick. If none of your body parts are moving after 1:14 go visit a doctor.

------------------

German Hip Hop (this song is mostly in English tho):

Freundeskreis - Tabula Rasa

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XetexhUTCYI

Nice beat & flow

Re: Music: What are you listening to today?

I decided to buy the first Weezer album this week after "sampling" it a bit, and I'm hooked. Never really thought much of them since the only two songs I had ever heard were "Island in the Sun" and "Beverly Hills". I like how a lot of their songs are somewhat reminiscent of old 50's-60's rock, but with a lot of distortion. My favorites are "No One Else", "My Name is Jonas", and "In the Garage". Every song on the album is actually pretty good, "Only in Dreams" is the only song I routinely skip (*yawn*).

I love Weezer. I've been listening to their latest, Raditute. Rivers Cuomo is a pop culture genius, and I love how he stands up for non-conformists. He stays true to himself and does what he wants, and people respond to that.

Re: Music: What are you listening to today?

I just discovered Saxon Shore, and I am listening to all of their releases over and over. Here is a taste (listen all the way through, it's really good):

Of course, I have to keep injecting a Mogwai song every so often, or the withdrawals start. Here is my current favorite Mogwai song, complete with vocals from Roky Erikson (which somehow makes it an even sadder song, somehow, knowing his history):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OULPr3OOb4Q

It's off the Batcat EP, so you won't find it on any of their CD's.

One last one, from a CD I honestly didn't like at all when I first got it, but now cannot stop listening to. This is Black Spider off the Zidane film soundtrack Mogwai did. It's gorgeous, really grows on you:

I don't know how well you know her stuff, but there is something about Sanvean (I am Your Shadow) that makes me want to run out and kill myself just to see if it is as sad as I think it might be:

Re: Music: What are you listening to today?

Kiss Alive!

I came across this while loading some old CDs on my Iphone. I know, without a doubt, that I had not listened to this in over 20 years.

For those who were junior high age or younger in the mid 1970's this album was HUGE!. Many used this as the gateway to what was considered the more acceptable hard rock of the era.

Much of this album holds up quite well today, especially the first side and a few of the songs off of the second album. 100,000 Years would have been served well by cutting out much of the middle section.

If anything this record serves as a greatest hits compilation of their first 3 albums with most of the songs being superior versions than the originals.
