So now I'm listening to the great Porter Wagoner. His greatest song, Green Green Grass of Home:

His breakthrough hit, Carroll County Accident, one of the greatest story songs:

And a forgotten classic, The Cold Hard Facts of Life:

endless love

"glee" cover

a classic, melodramatic love song from when i was just a kid. saw the recent cover version on glee and enjoyed it a lot. the song might be somewhat cheesy, but there is also real passion in it.

I would have LOVED that if it didn't have the slight R+B flavor. It's a matter of taste, but I would always prefer they go for "pretty" rather than "soulful," and here you have backup dancers and moments reminiscent of the Mariah Carey finger-pointiness.

I know that I'm late to this bandwagon, but I'm really digging this:

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

All My Little Words

I Don't Want to Get Over You

Busby Berkeley Dreams

Zebra

The Book of Love

I've been playing NIN - Hurt, followed by the Johnny Cash cover of the same song a lot in the last few days. I can't decide which one I prefer. I think its the original, but it is close.

Hobby,
My sister's boyfriend does a really good cover of All My Little Words. I have listened to some of their other stuff, while it wasn't bad, it wasn't really something that I could get into.

Dubey,
Personally, I think it's Cash and it isn't really close. That being said, Nine Inch Nails, is my favorite band. While it's a good song, there are other on that album that I like better.

Today I listened to Rising Down by The Roots and really dug it.

Rising Down is amazing. I've loved all of the Roots' recent albums from Tipping Point on. I love their old stuff too, and I know this is contrary to popular opinion, but I actually prefer the new stuff. I think the music seems more focused with Black Thought manning the mic and delivering the lion's share of the lyrics.

My favourite is Game Theory though, I thought it was such a perfectly structured album. Each song flows into the next seamlessly, and just seems to 'fit'. And the song "atonement" contains one of the most perfect rap verses of all time, in my opinion, as well as one of the best samples you'll ever hear.

As far as Hurt goes, I'm not sure if I agree with you. To be fair, I haven't seen the music video accompanying Cash's version, but Reznor's vocals just seem more dark and harrowing to me.

A couple songs I'm really digging at the moment:

Julian Casablanca - 11th Dimension

The Clientele - I Wonder Who We Are

I was listening to some of their earlier stuff and it wasn't really doing anything for me. But then I got to Rising Down and that album just clicked for me.

For me, the songs just have completely different feels. Trent's version is much darker and it feels like he hasn't quite made it out the other end of his addiction. Where as Cash's version is a man looking back on his life and the decisions he's made. He's seen a number of his friends die and knows he doesn't have much time.

I just found an old Rusted Root CD from the mid 90's. If you can get by his voice there is some great stuff going on.

I don't know why people like Johnny Cash's Hurt so much. Johnny Cash has so many great old songs. Why listen to that? That's not him, that's Trent Reznor.

While importing my CDs into my ITunes in preparation for synching the collection to my new IPhone when my Verizon contract runs out on the 28th, I am listening to Andrea Bocelli.
What an awesome talent!
I also love my Mac! Switching from a PC to a Mac is the best thing I've done for myself since quitting a three-pack-a-day-camel- straights habit twenty-five years ago!

I'm listening to Warren Zevon's album Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School. My favorite songs are the title cut, Jungle Work, and Gorilla, You're a Desperado.

I think Gorilla is one of his very best songs. Very funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2O91T6ZeW0

"The gorilla at the LA Zoo snatched the glasses right off my face. Took the keys to my BMW, left me here to take his place.

I wish the ape a lot of success. I'm sorry my apartment's a mess. Most of all, I'm sorry I made you blue. I'm betting the gorilla will, too."

because of the emotional resonance, especially in conjunction with the video and his death. it is him, but also NIN. the interpretation is very different. it was a great song to start with and he makes it something amazing. who wrote a song should not affect your listening experience, just how it sounds.

not denying that his back catalogue is awesome and alot of people dont pay it enough attention.

Cash was very religious, and Hurt's lyrics are so nihilistic that it just doesn't sound like him to me. Cash's cover of Personal Jesus I can see, but the ideas in Hurt seemed antithetical to what he stood for.
