U2: live version of Ultra Violet (Light My Way)

Incredible to hear a song from Achtung Baby, the album where Bono really started to display problems singing, sung now when his voice and technique are better than ever.

Funny moment near the end of the song when he almost falls off the stage.

Original version for comparison. Many have commented that they love the darker, gravelly tone to his voice from Achtung Baby, but that doesn't really speak to the point that he was losing his voice and struggling for the high notes that only two albums ago had come with ease. It's like Rod Stewart, who I think is a fantastic performer, but his voice has gone so far to hell he can't hit a note above middle C without using falsetto.

I'm listening to a jangly Bay Area group called the Orange Peels. Really nice harmonies. This song in particular is thrilling: Something in You

How is it I've never heard of The Marmalade! So I listened to your song today and it made me really sad

The world is
a bad place
a bad place
a terrible place to live
Oh but I don't want to die...

That line always reminds me of the line in Old Man River. "I get weary, and sick of trying. I'm tired of living, but scared of dying."

There's sadness in this song, but also joy. Looking back, trying to change. The music reinforces the message of the lyrics beautifully.

I think this song makes me sad because, like you, I really identify with it. It seems the older I get the more I look back on my past and feel connected to my childhood and my old home. I was thinking just the other day that I might want to move back home before I die. Is that weird or what? And then I open this thread and see your post. WEIRD.

Since we're discussing it, thought I'd just post the entire lyrics. I used to think this song was called "Oh my sorrow" until I read your post and then listened to it.

The changing of sunlight to moonlight
Reflections of my life
Oh how they fill my eyes
Verse 2 (Repeat)
The greetings of people in trouble
Reflections of my life
Oh how they fill my eyes

Chorus
Oh my sorrows
Sad tomorrows
Take me back to my own home

Chorus (Repeat)
Oh my crying (Oh my crying)
Feel I'm dying, dying
Take me back
to my own home

Verse 3 (Repeat Verse 1)
I'm changing, arranging,
I'm changing,
I'm changing everything
Everything around me

Verse 4 (Repeat Verse 1)
The world is
a bad place
A bad place
A terrible place to live
Oh but I don't wanna die ...

this is a pretty common practice in certain cultures. my paternal grandparents were able to do this a few years before they passed away, after they'd been displaced from their ancestral homes for more than four decades. i'm sure it meant a great deal to them during their final years.

I haven't posted in this thread because I spend almost all my time listening to new music, for a variety of reasons (I get bored quickly, I like going to lots of smaller shows, etc.) but every year around this time I find myself wanting to listen to Sufjan Stevens' Illinois. I'm not sure what it is about winter (I know it is fall, but I think it is the fact that it snowed here a couple times last week is what made me think of it). It looks like you can stream one of the songs from the wiki page.

Anyway, its a phenomenal album from start to finish and I can't imagine this trend will end for me anytime soon. The album is already 4 years old.

The first half of this video was a staple of all of the NRBQ shows that I saw in the 80's and early 90's.
