I liked this one a lot.

50/50 was so much better than I anticipated...I usually hate Rogen, but everyone kept saying how he actually wasn't annoying in this movie. I didn't believe it, but you guys were right.

It was actually funny too...some great lines

Drive was the perfect level of stylish in that I wasn't turned off by the style, but I wasn't particularly impressed enough by it to make up for the rest of the story's weaker/average points.

Pretty neat, but I imagine I'll forget about it by next year.

I know it's not new, but I recently saw Into the Wild, and I thought it was outstanding. I don't recommend a lot of movies, but this is one that I think a lot of poker players would like. Highly recommend it.

Since we're talking about some tv shows here, the British Peep Show is excellent and available on Netflix Instant. It's ****ing hilarious.

Michael Clayton is one of my favourite of all time, can't really put my finger on why, I just love it.

Rambo

I enjoyed it, but there was quite a bit of movie in this violence.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

Burden of Dreams - great documentary on the craziness that was Fitzcarraldo (and Herzog and Kinski, of course!). Only Herzog would actually try to haul a boat over a mountain just for a movie.

Death in the Garden - early Bunuel movie. It had some touches of surrealism and black humor, but it was mostly an action/adventure movie (weird from Bunuel, I know). Was pretty good. I wasn't blown away by it, but I liked it. 7.5/10

The Blue Angel - amazing movie. The great Emil Jannings plays a professor who falls in love with a burlesque dancer (the amazing Marlene Dietrich). Wonderful movie. 9/10

Re-watched the first three Return of the Living dead movies. The first one is so funny and clever. Very underrated. The 2nd was basically a copy of the first, but still very funny. Very dark ending. The 3rd one had a more serious tone. Had a lot of references to greek mythology. It was interesting, and probably a much better and smarter script than it gets credit for.

Re-watched Fulci's Zombi. It has a lot of great scenes (the eyeball scene in particular .

Yi-Yi - Edward Yang's 3 hour family drama. Very good. Heart wrenching at times. Well acted. 8/10

Man of Aran - very interesting early "documentary" from Flaherty. Has some amazing shots for a 1934 movie.

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean - the first 2/3rds of the movie are amazing and hilarious. I loved this movie so much. Then the wheels kind of came off in the last 30 minutes or so. 8/10

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
- Completely blown away by how much I liked this movie. Great crime caper starring Jeff Bridges and Clint Eastwood. Directed by Michael Cimeno. 8.5/10

Bob Le Flambeur - Melville's heist caper about a degenerate gambler and his plans to rob a casino. Great movie. Did not expect it to turn out the way it did. 8.5/10

The Grey - I am so disappointments at the ending, or the final hour in general. Starts off excellent and goes down hill taking on more than it can chew. 6/10

Superheroes - Real life people donning costumes and fighting crime at night. All I can say is uhhh yeah... Kick-Ass is a documentary? 7/10

Dance Party USA - Am I allowed to review something I saw 15 minutes of and turned off? Rented this because I loved Cold Weather and didn't hate Quiet City, so let's just say Dance Party really feels like a first time feature. That's not a compliment. 2/10?

The Descendants

A man must deal with his two daughters once his wife suffers an incapacitating boating injury.

Very well acted drama about families and relationships. A plot synopsis might make you think about those afternoon made for tv movies where brave women battle the cruel twists of fate. It's a lot less heavy handed then that and despite the big emotional moments that come up it never descends into soap-opera melodrama.
