1. There are so many movies with ''classic/cult/important/masterpiece'' attached to them that I didnt watch, so those are the ones with priority, obv.
2.Movies are comming out constantly, (with ratio of bad to good in favor of bad), it's impossible to see them all so I had to set boundary somewhere.Seting it at 7, I figured that I will certainly miss some great movies, but a lot of bad ones(which is the point).

However, I often see praises of ''below 7-movies'' here and I am wondering am I missing more of the good ones than I thought I was missing.

So, I would like to make a list of ''below 7 on imdb-movies that shouldn't be missed'' based on suggestions from this thread. 1-2 suggestions would be very cool from you ppl.

Correct me if I am wrong: Vixticator: Sweetgrass?; Dominic: The American? That would be my guess for suggestions of you two. For others, I dont know.
there are so many things wrong with this, but the first reason is simple

sure IMDB is a really handy site for lots of reasons, and the grading system does give an indication, but you shouldnt decide these things solely on that basis

but i guess it depends on what you want.

if you want to watch all "important" films (and i kinda guess thats what youre going for here), it can be usefull

soo, euhm, ignore anything ive said haha

Can anybody recommend some more heist movies to me, I love it!
The plots always twist and twist.
Have seen the code ( thick as thieves) and ofcourse oceans, italian job.
More films in these genre are verry well appreciated!

sightless: cool, on the list.

Showshone: I was trying to be very clear with my reasons. Proces of picking goes like this:
1. I see recommendations here.
2. I look at the imdb grade. If it is above 7 then step 3
3. I look at the genre, storyline, etc; If I am interested, I put it on ''to be watched'' list
4.According to my mood, I pick from that list.

When I said ''important'' , I meant important for better understanding of devolopment of movies through history. I have a little knowledge about that so I will rather watch Yoyimbo or Le Samurai than some horror movie with 6.5 on imdb. I am aware that I am missing some good ones, thats why I made that post.

I also checked a few movies at random, in particular The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting by Raoul Ruiz. Since it scores around 7.5, I'd say those who vote for it are pretty much in the know. Only receives 281 votes as compared to Dumb and Dumber, which is rated by over 92,000. Ruiz's film, btw, outscores the Farelly Brother's opus.

I watched "The Kids are All Right" yesterday. I'd say it was good, not great. Certainly not Best Picture material although the acting was good (Annette Bening's performance in particular was fantastic). Maybe a 6.5 out of 10 for me.

For those who have seen it, there is a rather momentous turn of events near the middle of the film that I found to be completely unbelievable and out of character for the wife played by Julianne Moore. Anyone else feel this was a little over-the-top considering the characters involved?

I also felt that Paul, Mark Ruffalo's character, was treated badly by the script, especially at the end where he was just sort of tossed off and forgotten about.

At any rate it was an enjoyable small film, some good laughs and good performances. However I highly doubt it would be getting the same level of critical praise without the lesbian moms angle.

another excellent movie recommendation site is metacritic.com. Basically combines the major print reviews into a "meta-score", also provides links directly to the print reviews which I find very handy. The site also has a good link to the year-end critic's prize-winners, the different Top 10 lists, award nominees and winners, etc. Nice site for a movie fan. (also does the same for music, TV, video games, etc.)

That only has 217 votes, although I dunno if more would push it up or down. Either way sure. I'm sure there are a quite a few movies I think are great that are slightly below 7. For instance, Femme Fatale, Obsession, and Body Double. De Palma got him some haters.

(Of those the first I listed is best)

I love much of De Palma's work, and Criterion will soon release Blow Out, one of my favorites from him.

Speaking of body doubles, one of my colleagues had a student who body doubled for Julia Roberts.

When is the release date? I love that movie. I keep checking netflix to see if I can rent it and somehow they don't have it in stock. How can they not have Blow Out? Crazy. I didn't know know Criterion was working on a release, great news.

It uses a Taste Compatibility Index to tailor recommendations based on your rankings of films, which is neat. That could land you in a similar situation as the current one I guess, but I've found a lot of good stuff. Protip, if you've seen mostly American films, in searching for arthouse/international stuff it ca be useful to look past the users with the highest TCI for you and instead look at users who seem to watch a lot of world cinema.
I find that Netflix works really well in recommending films for me. Which it should I suppose, given that I've rated over 1000 films. They even had that one-million dollar contest awhile back for who could come up with the best software for predicting user ratings, maybe that helped.

+1 for blow out. {Period pieces from that era seem to get better with age

While by no means a great movie, and but based on your other choices I think you'd enjoy Spike Lee's "Inside Man". I think it's a better movie that some of the reviews it received.

Love that whole De Palma Hitchcock-like period: Blow Out, Body Double and Dressed to Kill are all excellent IMO.

Bad ones that I miss will be in much larger number. At least thats my reasoning. But in attempt to not miss at least some of the great ones, I made that post of mine. Give me a few beside The American to put on my list. Some I love are also polarizing-like Una Pura Formalita (A Pure Formality) (that movie stoped me from just lurking) Shame on you Roger Eberet. Not for not liking it, of course, but for, it seems like, not even trying to understand it or sleeping through it.

Ah I promised my self not to mention it again but couldnt resist. This would be the last time so here's a little review.
My love for this movie is like a burden which I want to drop of my back by sharing it with someone.
Most amazing thing about the movie is changing of a genre in second watch.I have never expirienced something like that before. In first watch, its a chrime/thriller and in second watch it's a beautifull character study/drama. We completely change point of view in second watch-put areselfs in different shoes/character. Whole movie is set in a police station.
It's incredibly original, gripping, visually beautifull (watered-down colours) with beautifull camera work and music score (ennio morricone). Acting is superb. In my top 10.
First time watching, I was puzzled with story. Second time... you will have to expirience it yourself. It stayes for a long time. Ty Giuseppe Tornatore for writing and directing this.

Since very few ppl have watched it, I uploaded it on youtube. If anybody wants a link send me a pm.

If you pm me, dont be discouraged with opening scene (in the woods) which is very dark so it seems that the quality of the upload is worse than it actually is. After 3 or so minutes in the police station, it's very watchable.

Of my back you go
