Was thinking of watching it, but the bad reviews on Netflix made me push it aside.

It was an amazing beginning. I might have been less disappointed if it hadn't started out so well.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

Watched Samuel Beckett's Endgame, which is essentially a play that features four characters, but two spend most of the play in covered trash cans. The two main characters, Hamm and Clov, are played by Michael Gambon and David Thewlis, and it's a treat to see Thewlis' work. It's a wonderful production of a stage play that suffers a bit from the usual inherent staginess, but the director does a good job, I think, overall. It's also one of Beckett's greatest works and well worth seeing. The disc is part of the Beckett on Film series, in which some very well known actors and directors do all of Beckett's plays.

I watched A Serious Man. I thought it was mean-spirited and snide, and not at all funny. Probably anti-semitic, too.

Shake Hands With The Devil

Having read the excellent book, I was really looking forward to this.

The book was written by General Romeo Dallaire, who was the commander of UNAMIR (United Nations Assistance Mission For Rwanda) from January to July of 1994. As we all know by now, the UN didn't take the entire thing remotely seriously, or care to, and it was a catastrophe of incredible proportions.

The book is Dallaire's very frank account of what happened there, and how he was pretty much hung out to dry along with the entire region, essentially. It is fascinating and filled with interesting facts. I strongly suggest it.

The film, on the other hand, simply documents Dallaire's return to Rwanda ten years later (this, after breakdowns, suicide attempts, and alcoholism).

While it is quite something to see this poor soul's torment, it hasn't got the bang of the book. There are sections of the book where you simply cannot believe what you are reading. It is incomprehensible in places.

The film is worth seeing, but do not expect the impact of the book.

The Lovely Bones - Indulgent nonsense. The worst movie I've seen in years maybe. 2 hours and 15 minutes too long, imo. 1/10

I thought that 3 or 4 separate (shorter) good movies could have been made out of this self indulgent mess. but as it is...it's just not good

Yeah, a 1/10 might be harsh because everything about it isn't worthless. It's often captivating visually, which is why I kept watching (that and somebody else was watching it with me lol). The story doesn't come together well and the characters are flat. I don't know why Tucci got a supporting actor nomination..? He wasn't awful but cmon. Mark Wahlberg should get a lifetime achievement Razzie if he hasn't already. Weisz and Sarandon were barely used at all. There was some kind of weird underdeveloped romance between the dead girl and some random guy she talked to once.

Spoiler:

It wasn't so-bad-it's-good either.

yeah that movie is in bad need of a re-edit. it had so many individual scenes that were interesting, but the way it was put together just made in incomprehensible.

Before Sunset (2004)

PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN BOTH FILMS!

I wrote this for another site about our favorite films of all time. This is mine.

Great art becomes part of one's life. It effects us in ways we cannot describe. We carry it will us, like an emotional touchstone. In some cases we measure our lives against it. For me, no painting, sculpture, novel, or film can measure up to Before Sunset, in this sense. Celine and Jesse's relationship has become part of my life in the same way as my own, and those of my closest friends.

I feel bad for those who did not view this film, and it's prequel Before Sunset, when they first came out. I dont think it can ever become part of you, like it has for me, if you did not see the original as a 20-something, wait 10 years for the sequel, and see it as a 30-something. Your life must parallel Celine and Jesse's.

This is the only film I love unconditionally. I cannot see flaws in it. Perhaps they are there, but they are forever invisible to me.

The film opens with its ending, a structure which I only began to appreciate on multiple viewings.

It opens with Jesse on the last stop of a book tour. He has written a novel about he and Celine's first encounter. During the question and answer period a reporter asks him why his books ends on an ambiguous note. He replies that it is a litmus test which will tell the reader whether they are a cynic or a romantic. This is same test we are put to while watching the film. In fact, this may be one of the greatest such tests ever put on film.

As he is answering questions, he is stopped suddenly when Celine appears. He stammers, unable to keep his train of thought; unable to conceal his fear and joy at seeing her.

They spend the next hour walking around Paris, in real time. At first they are both coy but she wastes little time getting to the question we all need to ask; "Did you show up Vienna?". He answers no. We feel both saddened but a little relived. We cant decide which is better; them having not met again, or them having met and having a doomed relationship.

Celine pretends she is not a romantic. She covers herself with cynicism. She pretends to have forgotten that night. When she says she cant remember it, you can see Jesse deflate. How can she not remember it? It meant so much to us.

They take a boat ride on the Seine and Jesse tells my favorite apocryphal story of all time about how the Germans were ready to blow up the major landmarks in Paris. They had the Notre Dame Cathedral wired, leaving behind a soldier to push the button, but he couldn't do it. It was simply too beautiful.

Slowly their mutual walls begin to fall. They stop lying and expose themselves. She wants to touch him so badly but cant do it.

She finally gets up the courage to hug him, covering her desire with a friendly gesture.

"I wanna see if you stay together or if you dissolve into molecules."

The films ends with my favorite final scene and line of all time.

"Baby, you are going to miss that plane"

" I know"

We are not told if they get back together, but of course they do. They must, for I am a romantic, and this relationship means too much to me for it not to succeed.

Some people have seen these films and suggest that Jesse is too pompous or Celine is too neurotic. These are some of the very qualities that make me love them both. They are real. They are not perfect. They are human. Too love someone is too love the good and the bad. Sure Jesse is pompous but he is also intelligent, loving, charming and a romantic. Celine may be neurotic but she is also tender, funny, and filled with passion.

The idea of a third film scares some but I want to meet up again with Celine and Jesse in the same way I want to see an old lover or friend. Their absence lessens me.

Really nice review, Clovis. It only reinforces my disbelief and utter confusion that the Before Sunrise/Sunset series didn't earn me more point in the Movie Sheep. According to the Lounge -- it's the best series of all time!

Seriously though, the final shot/line is also one of my favorites of all time. It always makes me smile and even gives me little goosebumps. I agree about Jesse and Celine feeling like people from my real life. I feel like I could meet them for a drink and spend hours catching up/reminiscing about our lives.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

I don't have anywhere near that kind of love for Before Sunrise/Sunset. The characters annoyed me a bit too much iirc. I preferred the first one by quite a bit. But I did see them both around the same time.

Where the Wild Things Are - Doesn't seem like there is enough material for a feature film here as there is a significant lull after about half an hour. I have never read the source material, also. The very beginning up until the point where the kid sails to the island is the best stuff. 6/10
