Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

The 80s Total Recall is a fun movie, but please don't mistake it for a good one.

but what makes this film interesting is the incredible production design. It's like a cross between Blade Runner's futuristic city-scapes and Minority report's usable and logical tools of the future. It was also great to see the first use in popular science fiction of a gravity train. Really cool.

The movies is pretty much a big chase film, and they do that very well. first there's a foot chase between Farrell and Beckinsale that takes place of the futuristic, elevated slums of Australia, then a magnetic car chase, and then an incredible set-piece that takes place in giant, multi-level elevators that move both vertically and horizontally.

Good fun.
This is extremely close to what I said to my friends about it after we saw it last night. I think that my description of the setting was "It's like they gave Total Recall the Minority Report world with the Blade Runner feel."

This is an excellent example of how to do a remake. Enough nods to the original to make people smile, enough newness to make it its own film, and good enough performances to make it respectable. Two weeks! A robot getting its arms ripped off on an elevator.

The 3/4 overhead shot of Walter White walking through his droid army near the end really reminded me of Return of the Jedi.

Way better than I expected. I don't think they need to remake Blade Runner, but would like to see them redo the rest of Dick's library.

Saw: the white ribbon - pretty great 7.5/10

TDKR - Really enjoyed it, love Tom Hardy. I think Bane makes a great villain.
Hated the twist and the cheese though...that didn't make any sense to me. Still 8/10

God Bless Ozzy Osbourne - great doc about ozzy. Covers the Sabbath and Solo years. Loved it. 8.5/10

Started 13 assasins yesterday but asleep.

Tomorrow finally Prometheus arrives in Germany.
Going to see it as double feature with Alien.

Never seen Alien on the big screen. Will be fun.

Thing I remember about Alien on big screen is when he gets in the dark chamber with the eggs, I looked around the theatre and the people sitting in the dark watching it kind of mirrored the scene.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

VOD'd a found footage horror film called V/H/S and dug the hell out of it. It's about a group of guys hired to break into a house and steal a video tape. They find a dead guy in a room full of of TVs displaying white noise. The house is small, dark and loaded with tapes. The group of men take turns going through the content of some of the tapes and what they witness is quite scary.

It takes some getting used to because the entire film is "found footage" so there is a lot of shaky cam, more so than Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project. A friend hates shaky cam so he didn't like the movie as much.

Here is the trailer, if you like what you see in the first 1:30, switch it off.

Snow on Tha Bluff

B+

From Wiki:
Quote:
The story of Atlanta robbery boy and crack dealer, Curtis Snow, who stole a camera from some college kids in a dope deal and made a documentary about his life.
I recently caught this movie on Netflix Watch Instantly and I really enjoyed it. Snow on Tha Bluff is the best found footage movie I've seen. The movie masquerades as being "real" and through clever marketing the lines between reality and film have been blurred.

Snow on Tha Bluff offers a unique take on the life of a criminal and despite the despicable nature of the protagonist, the film manages to hit many emotional beats. The lead is a bit of an Omar from the Wire knock-off, but, considering the subject matter and the films narrative, that is forgiven.

The presentation is ingenious and it's about time a "found footage" movie was grounded more in reality.

It's currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly.
