Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2
mkay I watched the director's cut of Alien last week. Today I watched Blade Runner - The Final Cut, and then went to see Prometheus, which I enjoyed, though it had some structural problems and issues. Would recommend it, and see it on the biggest screen you can (I'd suggest 2D, I'd imagine the 3D would lose too much luminence in the darker sections to be better).
After many, many years of thinking Blade Runner one of the greats, I've changed my mind. Blade Runner is hugely, hugely influential and a classic, but Alien is better. It is so thoroughly cinema, so well acted and scripted, so well realised in its imagery, framing, pacing and detail, that I have to say it's probably now in my Top Ten. I think it even beats The Fly as my favourite horror movie ever.
That is all.

I get the impression they thought they were dealing with a topic so STRONG and IMPORTANT that they didn't have to steer clear of any cliches or worry about talking down to the audience. It is abysmally pedantic, and yes, the Magic Negro is in full effect.
Listening to Ed Furlong's Lincoln speech voiceover at the end (with slow motion images of the sea, the waves crashing and receding, crashing and receding...) makes me want to eat some guy's face off or pull out my own intestines and wave them around at a cop or just plain icepick someone to death and send him all over the place in the mail.
Other than that, I loved it.

For me, both of these films get better and better with time.
I cannot even imagine Blade Runner slipping in my estimation.

also, much like some other well known "anti-racism" movies like Crash or The Blindside, it's actually remarkably racist. Every scene in the movie exists only to glorify Edward Norton.
edit: I'm talking about American History X, ldo

I think Alien is purely perfect structurally, and a masterpiece of genre. But Blade Runner, with all its flaws, is still about something much more interesting and meaningful.
Both, imo, are simply superb.

I prefer Aliens, and don't get the Blade Runner love. So, yeah.

i mean both are good, solid movies and i can see why someone would think they are great, i am just surprised that there do not seem to be that many detractors.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2
I think my love for certain films has to do with my age and when I first saw them. Alien and Blade Runner are two of the first films I can remember thinking as more than entertainment. As filmic art.
Those films and I are of the same era. that's one of the reasons I have such love for them.

Anyone else see Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life? It's a very inventive biopic on famed French singer/artist Serge Gainsbourg. It was written and directed by Joann Sfar, based on his graphic novel.
It's quite amusing and fun...with surreal moments and lots of great songs.
It also has Laetitia Casta playing Brigitte Bardot. Yowza.

If you wait long enough to see Blade Runner, it just seems like an obvious ripoff of every SciFi movie to come out since then.

I liked Alien. I fell asleep watching Blade Runner, and I'm a huge Harrison Ford fan.
I WAS really tired, though.

Impressive that the movie was able to look into the future and ripoff ideas from non-existent movies.
There are a couple of movies that come to mind that everyone loves that I think are just ok, The Usual Suspects and Goodfellas. Flame away.
