Next, try The Limey, Solaris, and Kafka.

Thank god Avengers is no longer in the #1 spot... that movie sucked dark continent bung hole.

I suppose it was the best HW could have done depicting a CHILDREN'S STORY, but I am not a child.

unfortunately the new #1 is not much better.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

I was thinking this morning about what makes a film great, and for me it always comes down to memorable moments and lines, and balance in the script.

Trying to think of an example, I finally landed on Marge Gunderson at the end of Fargo, and the speech she makes. The film is a "dark comedy," and there's really no place for speeches or anything heavy. Yet, somehow, everyone involved manages to pull this off perfectly.

Just my two cents:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmoYpJIUWhY

Thin Ice (2011) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1512240/

4/5

In Thin Ice, Greg Kinnear plays a dickish insurance agent who attempts to steal a valuable antique violin from a cooky old man he insures played by Alan Arkin. Obviously, **** hits the fan, someone gets murdered, and Kinnear is forced to partner with an unstable former criminal turned locksmith played by Billy Crudup.

Thin Ice does a great job of blending comedy with thrills as the stakes and laughs escalate throughout the movie. The movie is fast paced and even the bit roles are filled with actors/actresses who people are sure to recognize. I had a lot of "Of that woman or that guy is in this too" moments while watching the movie.

I'd recommend giving this a watch. I think a lot of people dismissed this as a Fargo knock off and didn't give it a second look. There are many similar elements, especially considering this movie is set in rural Wisconsin (lots of snow) and some of the characters are a bit cartoonish. But, Thin Ice is an entertaining crime movie.

You've seen the get rich quick scheme now unravels movie a hundred times. Thin Ice is another entertaining entry into that mix.

About to watch Shame. I feel like Rushmore about to watch The Grey. So much hype from my fellow Loungers that it is probably best I disconnect the rage switch in case it is less than amazing.

I got the gist of it.

The machinations of the plot are completely baffling. I don't get why so much happens off screen, or wtf was happening in general. Or why the performances are so stilted (clearly intentional, no idea why). Far too stripped bare for me, I guess. Donkey acted circles around everyone.

I like the director's cut better. The donkey goes to Mexico to perform in a certain kind of "show."

Also, it's clear he's a replicant.

Does he confirm it on the commentary? And does the donkey agree that interpretation is what is best for the movie?
