Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

I saw Martyrs last night and didn't like it, I liked that it just wasn't fuked up people doing fuked up things for no reason but I guess the gore/pain genre is not my thing, which is surprising because it should be right up my alley.

I have Pretty Little Things next up on Netflix so hopefully that will be much better.

how in the world did Fright Night (2011 version) get the good reviews that it did? watched it with several friends and I knew it was a comedy-horror yet it was so unbelievably unfunny that they didn't believe me. in addition to being unfunny, it was also unwatchable. never again.

Its not a comedy, i don't know why its described as 1, when it makes minimal effort to create laughs. There are scenes which are they to make you chuckle, but it isn't meant to be a comedy

I thought it was pretty good, nothing amazing, but a solid film

Saw the movie Pi a few days ago (hadn't heard of it til then). Definitely held my interest! One of my new fav movies. Anyone who at all considers themself a math nerd should watch it. You don't have to be a math geek to enjoy it though (my friend who told me about it doesn't care much for math).

Albert Nobbs is one of those, you know, costume period pieces set in Britain that is fairly dull. It's an interesting subject for a movie just completely inert. With a much more challenging script this could've been very good. 5/10

Wake Wood
has a solid concept for a horror movie,. These parents lose their child and some sorta satanic cult claims they can bring her back for 3 days yada yada. It was going for a bit of The Omen meets The Wicker Man type thing but doesn't succeed yet isn't totally garbage either. 5/10

This seems like the perfect example of a film that slightly piques your interest after watching the trailer, but you just never end up seeing.

Did you see House of the Devil?
Saw The House of the Devil tonight and loved it! Timeless film, it could have been made 30 years ago for all I know. Creepy build-up, fantastic payoff.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

I felt that both House of the devil and Innkeepers had a lot of atmosphere and good build-up, but that they are also sort of anticlimactic and lacking something. But maybe I just need to watch them again sometime, they are in any case quite decent.

Wold also like to give thread a heads up that Joakim Trier's Oslo, August 31st starts showing in US today. It's one of the best films of 2011 in my opinion.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

So in anticipation of making my students watch The Piano, Vidoedrome and Memento, I scree all three in the last couple of days.

I am now taking Videodrome off the list. I don't want phone calls from my department chair asking why I made a student cry. I forgot just how completely perverse it is.

Re: Movies: What have you seen lately - part 2

I'm embarrassed to ask this but aside from the theaters and Red Box how do you rent a movie that's not a commercial title?

I was DL movies but the site I was using closed down. I don't have a gaming system or anyway to stream into my TV. What are my options when I'm looking for a film like Martha Marcy May Marlene? Thanks in advance.

Blockbuster's DVD service actually has a number of old, harder to find films, but if you're only looking for something like Martha Marcy May Marlene, then...just Netflix?

Just watched the Gatsby trailer. Holy AIDS.
