I enjoyed watching the movie, but puerile describes it perfectly. I didn't know what to make of the fireworks funeral scene -- self-referential puerile chic?

Of course, 'useless hipster' describes *me* perfectly, too. (I was wearing fitted, plaid, polyester, pearl-snapped cowboy shirts in 1970.)

To clarify I'm using hipster to convey the mindset that won't allow liking anything popular. Typically coupled with excessive praise or interest in things that are obscure

You are confusing hipster with having taste and a functioning brain.

Right. The hipster mindset comes from a false sense of superiority. Perfect example thank you

I rewatched Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors last night. I was struck by how young Martin Landau and Sam Waterston looked, and also how much better Angelica Huston looked compared to how she looks now. Mia Farrow was milfy hot too! Dialog is often stilted even in Allen's best movies, and this is very true here. I guess I liked it but not quite as much as I used to. Its ideas are profound but the execution is pretty clunky at times.

Jerry Orbach as Landau's black sheep shady brother was the highlight for me, talk about perfect casting. Also Allen's comic takedown of Alan Alda toward the last, Mussolini etc.

Solid.

All I was saying is that you got to relax a bit on how scientific accurate you are expecting alien/spaceship movies to be.

Stalker - A Russian movie from like 1979 by Tarkovsky (sp?)

Very arty. Long. Boring. Weird. I didn't hate it though. I'd rather see boring and weird than a lot of other movies.

There's like 75,000,000+ rabid Trump fans in the U.S. alone, almost everyone loves religion, and you know how the masses think about poker/gambling/probability. So drop the appeal to popularity.

Or maybe instead of just ****ting all over things that are widely liked we can

1) recognize what we're getting into. WTF was dude expecting from GotG2?
2) make an effort to understand the things we don't like and what others see in them.

Instead we've got a review expressing a minority viewpoint that is a complete rejection of the idea that there could be any redeeming value in the movie.

Me too. I never would have saw it except at my 10th birthday or so, had a party and we asked my dad to go get Scream (the Neve Campbell-Wes Craven horror) from the rental store as it had just come out.

There must have been a miscommunication with the heavily-accented Korean guy who ran the store because my dad came back with Screamers instead. I was upset at the time but we watched it anyways and I'll never forget that movie now. And I agree, I think it's actually a pretty sharp film for what it was.

Alien Covenant was ok. Looks spectacular. But every character besides David/Walter are cardboard cutouts who we do not care about.

And I cannot get past, just like in the last movie, how supposedly smart people land on an alien planet they know nothing about and traipse around contaminating the place with their piss and cigarettes, as well as touching and breathing in whatever they find. It's just ******ed.

I enjoyed the first one, so had an idea of what I should be getting from the sequel. And I didn't get it because it wasn't particularly funny or charming or enjoyable. As far as the puerility of the writing goes, I refer you to the Taserface "jokes". I mean seriously, how can anyone over the age of 13 find that as funny as the movie thought it was? The humour throughout was so stale.

A bonkers comic-book plot isn't necessarily a problem, but it's got to be backed up by more than lots of visual effects. What did GoG2 do that you haven't seen many times before?
05-22-2017 , 04:16 PM
That's a much more robust criticism, thank you. Now this is a movie designed to speak to as wide an audience as possible so it shouldn't be surprising that there are jokes or scenes that aren't for you.

What GotG2 did that I haven't seen before(in the genre): it successfully had several character arcs that were emotionally impactful in a movie that was otherwise very lighthearted. All of them landed well for me at least.

Seriously, I commented on that during the movie to the person I was with. They got off on an alien world nobody knew anything about with any suits or helmets or anything. Absolutely absurd.

Ugh. Zach Snyder and his Producer wife are both stepping away from the completion of Justice League because their 20-year-old daughter committed suicide in March. They tries to keep working but can't anymore.

I've said bad stuff about Snyder's movies in this thread, but I obviously wish him and his family peace and good thoughts.
05-23-2017 , 03:29 AM
Joss Whedon taking over. Now he's doing Avengers and Justice League. Feels like cheating.
05-23-2017 , 03:57 AM
To say he's doing Justice League is probably not too accurate at this point - the film is basically finished. I did read that they might be shooting some additional scenes.

It's a highly regarded art film.

man get out was superb.
the way it was filmed and the sound just incredible and the lead actor was fantastic.

but just so impressed with the visuals and the sound esp for a 1st time director.

I'm not a fan of horror but that transcended the genre.

Well, that's why I drove across Los Angeles to see it.

I've seen at least one other movie by Tarkovsky (Solaris).

Spoiler:
he wasn't strapped in at the chest, they showed him bending over and biting at the restraints earlier. Presumably he just bent forward and put the cotton into his ears with his restrained hands
