Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I thought the action scenes in Batman Begins basically made it unwatchable. Worst ever.

Guardians 2 is really entertaining just like the first one. It has if anything a much more interesting plot this time around and just as much of the humour. If you liked the first you will like it guaranteed.

For those who haven't seen it, it's officially labeled as Steven Spielberg vs. Alfred Hitchcock, but then Quentin Tarrantino pops in for a couple of verses followed by Stanley Kubrick, before the finale when Michael Bay swoops in. It's one of my all-time favorite ERBs.

David Lynch: The Art Life - A new documentary. It's him talking a lot and playing with his new daughter, plus old footage that is exciting to see (like behind the scenes on Eraserhead - not sure if that was previously released). It's biographical up through Eraserhead.

I wasn't blown away but it was fine. It's obviously a must-see if you're a fan, you know who you are. If you're a big fan of painting it is probably also a must-see.

I read "David Lynch: The Man From Another Place" last year (great, read it) so already knew a lot of this; if it's new to you it may be more interesting.

Short Films (David Lynch) - I'd seen all of these previously a number of times; they used to be streaming on Netflix. This was on the big screen and was definitely worthwhile to see detail you hadn't seen before.

Six Men Getting Sick - This was an early sculpture with projected images and sound on it, translated to the screen. Interesting enough, worth watching.

The Alphabet - I've always liked this one. It's like one of those Sesame Street alphabet cartoon shorts, but by Lynch.

The Grandmother - Longer, 20-something minutes. It's cool, never was my favorite. Has the Lynch creepiness and similar set design/creativity as the later Eraserhead (on a much smaller scale).

The Amputee (2 versions) - Funny little sketch starring the Log Lady long before she was that.

Premonitions Following an Evil Deed - This is like 45 seconds long and you should watch it now. In the '90s there was a project where they gave one of the first movie cameras ever to a bunch of directors and had them make a short film with it, given all the restrictions there would have been back in the day. (No cuts, 45 seconds or whatever, etc.) Lynch still manages to create a fascinating world that you want more of.

Don't think I wrote anything after seeing Eraserhead again a month or two ago (in a theater that played it originally at midnight on Saturdays in the '70s). At this point, for me it's pretty much Eraserhead > Citizen Kane (and all else).

So we have Mr. Glass... The Horde... Unbreakable... what's the girls name going to be?

Saw The Circle with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson good lord what an abortion.

I don't know what the production costs were but they may have well lit the 10's of millions on fire.

Sheesh..

If you want to see a truly whacked movie, go rent APT PUPIL. Needless to say, you will be engaged.

Now, I didn't like the last Nolan Batman movie very much...it had story issues...but I can't fault his visual style or action geography.
You watch the 2nd one? I hated the action scenes in the first one for all the reasons you mentioned, but felt the 2nd was a marked improvement.

Shaft Great song. Not so great movie. Weak plot, weak acting, etc. etc. But still enjoyable.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers Lots of fun but I'm still struggling with some of the logic. Yeah, yeah, not meant to be logical. But how do the pods just know what a particular human looks like?

I had to lol a little when they showed a gas station selling gas for .27 gal. Good times.

Watched a clip from the original The Blob on Youtube recently and couldn't stop loling at a "watermelon - 5 cents a lb" sign.

If I could find a place that sold watermelon at 5 cents a pound, I would move there and never leave, even if it did have a huge blob that ate everything and everyone.

With David Lynch : An Art Life coming out recently, my indie theatre was playing it as a double showing with Mullholland Drive. I just watched Mullholland drive which I'd never seen before. It was nearing the end and I was all "oh where's the big twists and confusion etc". Then it all came. busy, busy, busy

Mulholland Drive is one of my top 5 movies of all time. I think I read that it was originally developed as a TV pilot but when that fell through Lynch turned it into a film. Probably explains why the tone changes so abruptly (but it works).

I am not generally a fan of weird for weird's sake but for some reason Lynch is able to do weird in a way that causes a very true and emotional reaction in the audience. For ex. the Club Silencio scene is unquestionably bizarre but incredibly powerful at the same time.

The Club Silencio scene was interesting. Half way through the song when I realized it was a Spanish version of Crying by Roy Orbison I was gratified.

Any overlooked movies on NFLX or HBO that someone wants to recommend?

If you havent seen it and love crime movies, would definitely recommend Road to Perdition on HBO.

Great little low budget SciFi movie with Sharlto Copley in a supporting role call Europa Report.

The movie had the guts to end the way The Martian should have ended...

Watched Couple In A Hole last night.

A very dark and unusual film about a Scottish couple who've retreated to the wilderness in France following a traumatic event, with great performances, marred only by a slightly far-fetched final scene. Recommended.

I was cleaning out some stuff and came upon a trove of old DVDs and VHS tapes. There was a DVD of the anime Ghost in the Shell from the 90s. I hadn't watched it in 10-15 years, but I've watched it 3 or 4 times over the last week.

It's a masterpiece on many levels. What I find surprising is that it is not at all anachronistic in the way that many 20+ year-old futuristic sci fi often is. It's just as current today.

I'm really curious about the plot & theme changes that were made for the recent 'live' version. Did they change things to avoid politics (i.e. evolution)? Did they change things to dumb it down to reach a wider audience (i.e. evolution)?

I literally don't remember anything about the recent movie, and I saw it about a month ago. It's that memorable.

Amoeba asked if I caught the Cowboy Bebop references right after I saw it. I thought there were a handful, but for the life of me I couldn't remember what or when they were. I enjoyed 2017, but the original is just a frigging masterpiece. Maybe I should try to read the manga.

I thought Europa Report was decent, but was actually let down by the ending. I also think comparing this movie to The Martian is like comparing Seven to Hot Fuzz because they both are about cops. Completely different genres, even though they both happen in space. ****, Martian even won best comedy at the Golden Globes (that was kind of ridiculous, but still proves my point). Europa was probably not going to be nominated in the comedy category.

Comparing... wtf
ER was much better than TM.
The martian wasn't a comedy, that's for sure... but it was a joke.
It was merely a statement of how the real martian would have actually have ended... given all the hype about realism.

Lucky you, you get to rewatch in higher quality on Blu-Ray at some point.

Friday night (I think, recently anyway) Road to Perdition was on HBO. Then Saturday caught the premiere of Sully.

That Hanks guy can act some. Though you apparently can't take him in any kind of vehicle that goes up.

Seriously, I was really enthralled by Sully. Hell of an opening, and got better from there. I'm not usually that much of a drama person, but it wound me up so much I had to take a walk around the block afterward to wind back down.

It would make me sad if I found out that the three people rushed onto the flight at the last minute didn't happen in real life, and was just Hollywood feeling they had to make an already exciting story "more exciting".

But as shown, a really, really good film.
