Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

So we all agree that Nolan is the best filmmaker in the business right now?

Let's also not forget interstellar had the worst sound mix of any film ever made.
04-27-2017 , 09:42 PM
Not really, as "worst sound mix" kind of implies the sound mixer guy is at fault. But actually Nolan TOLD HIM TO DO THAT!!!!! It was a conscious choice! So the sound mix is perfect, Nolan is just an incompetent hack.

wat

Criticisms of Interstellar are valid.

But...

Memento
The Prestige
Inception
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight

These are all at least good and imo great films...

On matters of taste there can be no argument.

I liked Memento but all the others my criticisms apply. Actually they apply to Memento as well but it was so clever and fast paced that I didn't notice. But man all the others are just so leaden and heavy and ponderous. But mostly just lacking in emotion. And for an action movie director Nolan is just terrible at filming action set pieces. Some of his sequences are just incomprehensible.

I enjoyed Momento, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Insomnia.

The rest of Nolans works I am fairly meh about, especially The Prestige.

The problem with Interstellar is that it tried to be both an emotional drama and 2001. If I ignore the emotional drama portions of Interstellar, I can at least enjoy it as an adult version of A Wrinkle in Time.

The Dark Knight is fascist garbage that, in all seriousness, led the hearts and minds of Americans closer to Donald Trump.

Batman in that film is doing Bush War on Terror stuff like torture and Patriot Act spying, and we're sort of meant to think that what he's doing is bad. But he is always still portrayed heroically, and at the end we're treated to a monologue about how even though he's doing these evil things, he's what we need. He's the man who will do bad things, will do what needs to be done. And he's a hero (or "not a hero", same thing) - a Dark Knight.

How many people (including young impressionable internet nerd trash) voted for Donald Trump, perhaps reluctantly, because even though he's a bad man, he's damn well gonna do "what needs to be done"?

Is The Dark Knight responsible for Trump? No.

Does it move the needle?

Yep.

I know the thread has moved on, but I like The Village, including the ending. 6th Sense was obviously good. Everything else sucked including Unbreakable.

I saw Dead Pool tonight on cable. I guess it was better than most super hero movies, but that's not saying much. Just barely enough of the jokes worked to make it watchable. The pegging "scene" was barely noticeable. That's was the reason I didn't let my 14 year old watch it - would have been fine. My now 15 year old watched it with me tonight and we just both half looked away from the sex scenes and pretending they weren't happening.

The Dark Knight didn't move the needle.

Nolan is alright. Memento is a good movie. I think I like Batman Begins the best of the new Batman movies, but still, just a superhero movie. Insomnia was ok.

Thats a pretty tenuous link connecting one small part of a superhero movie to an election that occurs 8 years later.

The 2 boat scene actually resonated with me the most and what i would give as a counterexample of the claims of facism. Ordinary citizens making a difference by trusting in the humanity of their fellow citizens.

The central conceit of The Dark Knight is that Batman is a dark and flawed hero but because he is the main character, obviously he is going to be written as sympathetic. Might as well criticize any movie with a flawed hero like Mad Max or James Bond.

The point is not that there's a direct line from Dark Knight to Trump, the point is that The Dark Knight is one of many works of art that affect how people think about the world in a way that leads them to support bad people and bad policies. I could have said "lovable misogynist sitcom dads move the needle towards Trump" in the same way.

As to your final paragraph, yea; people adore characters who are pieces of **** such as James Bond and Batman. Bout time that changes.

Dead Pool is my least favorite Dirty Harry movie.

I'm pro-Nolan and anti rabid Nolan-fanboys.

Nolan is absolutely great. His style clearly works better with some types of movies than others. His action movie stuff is clearly worse than his other stuff.
04-28-2017 , 02:43 AM
Baltimore, the larger point is that we don't need all your gratuitous politarding here in the movie thread.
04-28-2017 , 02:59 AM
I like other Nolan films. I didn't even mind the flawed Inception. Interstellar was his first film I genuinely hated.
04-28-2017 , 03:09 AM
I liked Interstellar for the same reason I liked The Fountain. I like movies that try to tackle questions beyond its reach and fail spectacularly. I think there is value in reaching beyond the capabilities of the director and a 2 hour runtime.
04-28-2017 , 08:31 AM
Interstellar blows, liked all other Nolan films and really like Inception.

Dunkirk should be interesting because it is something written by only himself and not his brother, so we can judge it more of a pure Christopher Nolan film. I would one day like to see Nolan direct a script written by somebody else though so we can actually judge him as a director instead of an everything.

I think is fair. He is a good technical director but terrible screenwriter.
04-28-2017 , 12:22 PM
How do you define good technical director though? A lot of his action scenes are incomprehensible.

The action scenes in his Batman movies were the worst I have ever seen.

Baltimore, I find your political comments regarding Batman interesting, but you have to realize Nolan didn't make Batman that way...that IS Batman....ever since the beginning. He's a hero AND a fascist...

And I like Nolan...his movies are never boring.

Memento and The Prestige are truly great films.

Inception, the Batman movies, and Insomnia are damn entertaining.

Interstellar was interesting to me...he bought off more than he could chew...so what?

Bolded same for me. Never felt like I haven't got my money's worth from a Nolan film.
