When the directing award gets split with Best Pic as it did this year, the director who wins often makes a flashier/more visually spectacular movie. Moonlight was a very small indie film, certainly not as much wow factor as La La Land in terms of directing style.

That being said Jenkins got amazing performances out of every single actor, and made a low-budget film that looked fantastic, so I think he deserved to win Best Director also.
This makes sense but does that mean they're supposed to read the script as well as watch the movie?

they can, but usually not.

Film is a collabortaive art. We're used to thinking that the director is the "filmmaker," but in actuality, there are hundred of people responsible for any given movie.

There are seven jobs on a movie set that are usually the most important:

Director
Producer
Actor
Writer
Editor
Cinematographer
Composer

All of those things are separate art forms (except the producer. He/she can have creative input, but they're are usually in charge of the business of the making of the movie)

A writer writes, a cinematographer photographs, an editor creates a whole other art form by putting images together - montage. Music/sound and acting are, again, separate art forms. And it's the director who wrangles all these different arts into a single, cohesive entity.

The most enjoyable script you read won't necessarily make the best movie. The best-looking film won't necessarily tell the best story. Etc.

Gore Vidal wrote a famous essay that tried to disprove the idea of the director being the auteur of a film iirc.

Toni Erdmann

German film that was the favourite for best foreign language academy award and probably would have won without Trump's Muslim ban.

One the most original drama films I have seen. It is too long needing 20 to 30 minutes cut but it's exceptionally well acted (Sandra Hüller merited an Oscar nomination), surprising and often hilarious. All I knew going in to the film was that it was a highly regarded German comedy/drama and I'm glad I didn't read a more detailed description or watch a trailer. The film often veers in deeply surprising directions including one totally unexpected and brilliant set piece that I'm glad I knew nothing about in advance.

An old American man watched this film & wanted to star in the American remake. There was no American remake, but the old man's name is Jack Nicholson, and now there is an American remake. Pretty nice to have the ability to get a film made, but when you're Jack Nicholson & you haven't made a movie since 2010 I guess you get whatever role you want, even if that role does not yet exist.

Nicholson is absolutely perfect for the male lead. I'm sad they're remaking the film - why do so when the original was so good? If they get a good director & screenwriter Nicholson will have an excellent chance to win an oscar - it is everything the academy would go for.

I'm keen to check out more of writer/director Maren Ade's work. She is exceptionally talented.

Where do you live? If it was released in America a couple of months ago, might not be showing any more outside of big cities. I think you'd like it. I think you'd also like A Bigger Splash it's nowhere near as good a film but Ralph Fiennes is amazing and I think you'd enjoy his character(outrageous he didn't at minimum get an oscar nomination but the acting awards always come from 'great' films).

Yeah, I want to see that, too...I live in Vegas...I'll catch them when they get on Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon.

Erdmann is showing in Vegas at Regal Village Square Stadium 18. A Bigger Splash was released is officially a 2015 film - imagine it's already on someone online site or other.

Tired of Alien-anything

Despite being a massive sci-fi person, have probably read 100? sci-fi books and just as many collections of short stories...even the first two Alien movies were just okay for me. I'm not sure why, if you were to describe them on paper they'd be right up my alley. Maybe the horror element isn't right for me. But then I like the Dead Space games a lot so idk

Moonlight

Very good movie, I enjoyed it, but it seemed a bit overrated. I didn't think it was a great year for movies...this was another one where it's hard to pick at in most ways, the acting was really good and it was well put-together, but there was something empty about it.

Manchester by the Sea

Better than Moonlight, and the acting was fantastic. It really took until the next day before I felt the full weight of the movie and it all clicked.

Hacksaw Ridge

Feel like I've seen it before after so, so many WW2 movies, but it worked. I still have Band of Brothers as the GOAT for WW2 personally but this fits respectably in with the crew. I was NOT big on Andrew Garfield as a lot of other people seem to be, not saying he was bad though (he wasn't). Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington are both solid though not overly used. And I pretty much forgot the other characters.

Arrival

Worked okay, I read the short story also. The approach on the aliens was well done and definitely more thought than your typical fare.

Keanu

gtfo this was ass as expected

Nocturnal Animals next up

I really liked Manchester By The Sea. Didn't love it though. Not a huge fan of the ending, nor a couple scenes/some of the writing, but it's def a good film and worth seeing. Casey Affleck is damn good.

I've seen Promethius about half a dozen times now, and each time I enjoy it more. I think expectations were just so high for that film, especially considering the trailers, that the film was never going to reach those heights.

Overall it's a pretty decent movie that explores some interesting themes - even if those themes are somewhat sidelined by having to dispatch the bloated cast.

Fassbender obviously carries the whole thing though, and I'm not sure I'd be any more interested in Alien: Covenant than I was AVP if he wasn't in it.

what do you enjoy more about prometheus:
- scientists that act beyond ******ation (lets takey off our helmets/oh, looky, a vagina monster with no intent to harm us humans)?
- the recovering from a caesarean section that makes john matrix look like a total sissy?

i like some aspects of prometheus, but lets not lie to ourselves here: that is one piece of crap!

The only reason I'm excited for Alien is because it's Ridley Scott doing it...even though he kinda goofed with Prometheus.

You either like the movie or you don't.

If you like it, you'll overlook the plot holes such as why an alien can grow from 6" to 9' in a day with no food.

I'm not sure what the world's problem with Prometheus was. I marked a return to Art Noveau space ships. What more can we ask of a movie?

Re-watched Do the Right Thing, showing on HBO this month. Still holds up, great movie. Danny Aiello is fantastic in it, probably his best performance ever. Turturro and Spike Lee are excellent also. Works as both a humorous slice-of-life of a day in a neighborhood, and as a searing social commentary.

Interesting that Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture that year. Goes to show, the winner is often not the film that ends up with a significant place in film history.

Yup.

Prometheus was also just a very good looking movie, from the opening cinematography which was brilliant btw, to the world building, space ships, everything. Covenant looks to capture the same IMO.

Hunt For the Wilderpeople, Taika Waititi, 2016

Terrific, oddball, shaggy-dog of a movie by the guy who made What We Do in the Shadows.

Trouble-making, young teen Ricky gets a last-ditch foster family in the wilderness of New Zealand...Sam Neil is his new "Uncle" and he also gets a lovely, supportive, funny "auntie." But Ricky has grown up in the city and doesn't know what to make of all this hyper-rural living. Ricky and Sam Neil go off into the wilderness and are soon the most sought-after "criminals" in NZ.

The fat kid who plays Ricky is fantastically funny. He names his new dog "Tupac" and he calms himself down by reciting profane haikus.

Seriouslym this is one of the best films I've seen in a year. If you liked What We Do In the Shadows, you'll like this, as well...even though they are completely different, they share the same kind of bizarre, funny tone.
