Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I actually just acquired serenity. Not sure why it took so long since I loved firefly.

Could have predicted very easily that microbet would not like either of them.

lil too soap opera for my tastes tho I was only really half paying attention to the few episodes I "watched" I could be convinced to give it another shot.
I know what you mean about it being a bit too soap opera, the perils of making a long running tv show I guess, gotta stretch the story out.
I've only seen S1 so far, but was impressed enough to look forward to S2 +3.

I've been looking online and pirate movies are a suprisingly under-represented genre, hardly any newer films out there, except for the Jack Sparrow saga.
You're gonna have to go back a few years to find anything remotely good.

This list is about the best you're likely to find. http://www.stuff.tv/news/25-best-pirate-movies-ever

One stand out title on the list is The Island http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080934/ not sure if it's quite what you're looking for and may be a bit dated now but maybe worth a shot.

Christopher Nolan should make a pirate movie imo.

I'm reading the unabridged version right now (1462 pages) for like the 5th time and while I could never name my fav film and I've read way more books than I've watched movies, with books it's not even close TCOMC is BY FAR the best novel I've ever read and the book I would choose if I was only able to read one book again for the rest of my life.

I'm pretty tired so I hope that last paragraph wasn't a total cluster****.

so when I say the film adaptation is gonna be unfairly judged it's an understatement, it's almost drawing dead for me to think it's made well enough.

the book is just absolutely perfect.

nothing would give me more pleasure than if a really talented director was given an unlimited budget and told to make a 4+ hr sprawling epic that was as faithful to the book as possible and made in a very serious tone not the somewhat disney-ish pirates of the caribbean style.
I hear ya. I have read the book multiple times as well and love it, which is why I can overlook the movies flaws. I just adore the story.

God, the bolded would be the ****. Sadly, I doubt it'll ever happen.

Making a serious film about pirates is always going to be a really hard sell to a studio to get financed since pirates weren't exactly nice guys.

Not nice = not serious?

Also, TCOMC is not a pirate film.

Wings of Desire An angel questions his angelness.

I certainly understand the appeal but this just didn't work for me at all. I did like the banter between the two angels and the premise was good but I just couldn't get into it. The whole Falk thing was bizarre and I found the whole movie really too artsy. The first hour seemed like the same thing over and over. A couple of scenes seemed way too long (trapeze, two band scenes). The payoff was fine but that whole scene where they meet seemed to drag on forever. I dunno, it just didn't work for me.

Not sure what that means. But pirates were murderers, rapists, thieves etc. How on earth do you make a serious film about that that a studio would be willing to invest a decent chunk of change into. Filming at sea on pirate ships isn't exactly going to work on an indie budget

See the second part of my post.....

The Count of Monte Cristo

Looks like there is something brewing for The Count of Monte Cristo: http://imdb.com/rg/an_share/title/title/tt2788532/

I also liked the 2002 version, albeit somewhat cheesy.

Eraserhead on the big screen. Amazing. Lynch's background of studying painting and sculpture seriously and then making a few short films really serves him well. Studying other visual art forms like that should probably be something that filmmakers do if they want to be serious artists.

It does a great job of portraying a nervous young bachelor who doesn't really know how to handle adult life yet. It does a phenomenal job of portraying a horrifying "meet the in-laws" night, giving us everything we fear about that. Often it's slightly warped or gross, but still entirely recognizable as something most of us have feared or experienced.

I haven't had the pleasure of a newborn yet, but once the baby came in the movie I recognized much of what happens (what it's really getting at that is) from my Facebook feed. Honestly.

The Grandmaster http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1462900/
The story of Ip Man, the kung-fu expert who trained bruce Lee.
Really good movie, fantastic cinematography that was rightly nominated for an oscar.
Great fight choreography that really expresses the art of kung-fu.
Any martial arts fan should love this. 9/10.

Pandorum http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1188729/
Pretty average sci-fi horror, watchable but nothing special.

Legion http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038686/...nm_flmg_act_14
Apocalyptic horror about a fallen angel who has to save humanity, in a greasy
diner in the middle of nowhere.
Good, late night horror flick. Worth checking out if you like indie movies.

Give me a break. Serenity is a sci-fi. Pretty sure there's no pirates. Really lame trolling.

Nice, have you got a lot of movie posters framed? I'm a black and white guy.

Got these framed in my house.

And getting a small picture framed now as we speak:

Costs a pretty penny but worth it. Dunno what my next one will be...

Based on the ones you have De Niro and Pacino sitting across from each other in Heat would fit in nicely.

It has space pirates. A lot of sci fi in space uses analogies of space travel with sea travel. Serenity does this in spades.
