Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I feel such a wussie when paranormal activities are discussed. I liked the first one except the stupid final shot, but had to shut off the second one about halfway through. Couldn't stand the sense of dread.

And I'm a horror film guy.

Even if you're not a sci-fi fan(I'm not), the original Star Wars are really fun to watch. Must see imo. Disliked Ep. 1 & 2 but enjoyed 3.

The original ending is much different and better and is about if you hunt around. There's actually three different versions, with one apparently unavailable version
Spoiler:
having the girl cut her own throat.

The two different versions were when the film was doing the festival circuit, and one version became available due to it being leaked online, but it's different from the mainstream release. I gotta say it was a great theatre viewing. His Area 51 was awful though.

The Martian

This is a great popcorn movie with some fantastic visuals and a plot that keeps a steady pace. For one man survival tales, this is much closer to Castaway than it is to All is Lost.

Matt Damon is great as an ordinary/extraordinary man just trying to solve one problem after the next to survive on Mars until they can come pick him up. In the meantime, back at home, NASA is trying to come up with a way to save him while saving face publicly, and his crew mates are left with a tough situation after being kept in the dark about Damon's survival. All 3 stories work, with the stuff on Earth being the weakest of the 3 but still pretty solid. It's funny, way more than I would've expected (the international waters thing was fantastic), doesn't get to sciency (is that a word), and keeps you on edge for the entirety of it's running time, which is a little over 2 hours but doesn't feel like it.

I got off work early, so I got to see a 3D matinee, and was the only one in the theater, which was awesome. Go check this out in the theater, cause I just don't think it will have the same effect on your TV.

Watched Guy Ritchie's Revolver last night. It was almost like Fight Club had sex with The Usual Suspects and Ritchie molested the baby while filming. I don't know whether or not I liked it. I had to go to Wiki and read the plot only to figure out that the US version is nothing like the UK version and it's missing scenes of vital importance.

I did think that Jason Statham was really great though.

Spoiler:
It was totally clear that Avi and Zach were the two guys from prison from the beginning so the big reveal didn't really do anything for me. It was so clear that it was almost like Ritchie wanted you to know all along.

Paranormal Activity part 8 paints within the lines of the PA formula. Creepy things happen at nighttime, loud sounds serve as scares and the people are dumb as nails.

I'd be more into this one if it didn't tread water for the first hour. The finale is cool but I was so far removed it was difficult to enjoy.

This won't be the last Paranormal Activity.

I'm starting to think Sideways might be a top 3 or 5 movie for me.

I think the scene with him and the woman on the porch, describing why he likes Pinot (he's describing himself), and her describing her love of wine in general, is probably the best scene in any movie. It was so touching, revealing, beautiful, and emotionally resonating of anything I've ever seen. And that's coming from someone who doesn't know anything about wine. This movie has it all, and is definitely in my top 5.

Agree about Sideways being a touching film. Im really into roadtrip movies as well and this one is on my top 3 of the genre for sure. That scene rbenuck4, is what stands out the most from the movie in my memory and made me admire and respect wine on a way I could not think of before.

Is probably the only movie I really really enjoy from Pyne from the ones Ive seen.

I don't remember it standing out as a great movie, but I'll be putting it on my rewatch list for another go at it.

Crimson peak was awful. Good visuals is all that can be said for the movie. Do not see

Sideays is a great, great film...and obviously Payne's best, although I enjoy Election quite a bit, too.

Thomas Haden Church's character really resonated with me, more than the Giamatti character, oddly enough. I mean, I'm a writer, and a mostly failed one, at that. But Haden Church reminded me so much of friends in LA who are cool, successful, and so completely emotionally ******ed that it's scary.

@BretEastonEllis: Dinner with a filmmaker/cinephile last night and we both agreed: 2015 is the worst year EVER for American film. An infection has arrived...
10-23-2015 , 05:32 PM
I hadn't thought about it, but he may be right...
10-23-2015 , 05:38 PM
I completely agree. The only movie I've seen this year that I have really enjoyed is Mad Max. Still want to go see Sicario as I've heard really positive reviews.

May go to an event tomorrow hosted by none other than John Waters. $150.00 includes after party with the master of filth.

Top 10 for me, for sure.

Watched The One I Love after turning it off a couple times previously in first 10 minutes. Forced myself to stick with it and really liked it. Didn't really know anything about it other than it got solid reviews. Really liked it.

Definitely in my top 10 for sure. Great acting across the board, with the wedding parking lot scene with Miles and his ex wife being the climax. When I found out Giamatti wasn't even nominated for academy award, i was shocked and a little angry. That was an all-time performance. Ever since then, I never watched, and couldn't care less about the oscars.

This.

I got Sixth Sense spoiled, watched it anyway, and found everything about the movie to be pedestrian. Same year I had Fight Club spoiled to me, watched it anyway, and still loved it. That's the difference between a movie that's good because of a twist and a truly good movie that happens to have a twist.

sideways is phenomenal.

Watched Goosebumps - great movie for the fam

I guess I need to see Sideways, damn. Can anyone compare Sideways to another movie? The high praise in this thread is making me want to watch it. I'm not really a big Alexander Payne fan. I enjoyed Election and thought About Schmidt was OK. I found The Descendants to be a big letdown after seeing all the praise it got during that award season. I haven't seen Nebraska. Thanks.

Im a creative writer but bad at interpreting the work of others. It took me multiple viewings to realize her talking about his prized '61 was a metaphor for him peaking. And she says you open a bottle any day and its different bc its complex. This is like her getting mad at him later then another day she lets him back in. Because they are complex like wine.

I didnt like election and hated schmidt but loved sideways from first viewing like 6 years ago. I sought out nebraska bc its payne but it was awful. Shrug. Ill still give all his movies a chance just bc of sideways.

If you watched it many years ago, give it another look. I think its a movie that would resonate more as you age.

Yes. I identify more with the bitter giamatti but church is my older brother and his crowd. The happy go lucky type that the neurotics resent.

A great scene i just noticed was how Miles' mom talks up jack and his resume just like jack talks up that of Miles. You can see Jack is somewhat irked by miles' mom constantly talking about his better days. Just like miles is when jack does it to him. So good.

Not sure. Just see it. It is surprisingly funny. Its Miles better than election or schmidt.
