edit: OK not sure what you mean cuz you say 2007/2009 but then cite taxi driver n annie hall.
I meant I'm using the AFI list from like 2007 or 2009 with the top 100 of all time. if you are going to tell me to ignore that, then please provide a better list that i can use. figured that was a good place to start. I have seen a good few of them but still there are so many I haven't watched.

so far I've watched Taxi Driver, Annie Hall, and Sunset Boulevard. Dunno what is next. But I'm excited because all 3 of those were top top notch

Cybil Sheperd was absolutely stunning in Taxi Driver. I'd only known her from Moonlighting but man what a face she had back then.

I thought it was pretty great when I saw it in theaters, but I tried watching it again and suddenly understood all of the complaints

AFI is good, but might want to try this list:

For me, this is the definitive list

I really enjoyed It Follows. Liked the score a lot. It had some really well done scenes and a few scenes I could have done without.

That said, I still have no idea what to make of the ending or the fact that
Spoiler:
the "It" definitely wanted to have sex with its victims. Weird sex commentary I don't know about?

Whiplash - 8/10

Also, which version of We Are What We Are is being recommended?

my favorite movie list is this one: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/film-noir/

the imdb top 250 is also solid, just ignore the bollywood infestation

I have only seen the North American remake and quite enjoyed it.

Nice, hadn't seen this.

Holdem, here is a good writeup, response, and alternative list to the AFI one: http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago...ent?oid=896619

The China Syndrome A young pretty newscaster (Jane Fonda) and her brash cameraman (Michael Douglas) filming a fluff piece at a nuclear reactor just happen to be there when an "accident" occurs. They watch the supervisor (Jack Lemmon) and his crew (Wilfred Brimley) get control of the problem during some tense moments. As the company that owns the reactor plays the incident down, Jane and Michael pursue the story while Jack is convinced there are much bigger problems at the reactor.

This movie really had a lot of potential. Great cast and the base story was pretty good. But it got pretty silly at times in the name of artistic license and the final scene was downright nonsensical. I still enjoyed it but if you watch it be ready to roll your eyes a few times.

Sunset Blvd. is great, but I don't think it has aged well, especially as it relates to how it treats "older" women. When watching the film, you get the impression that Norma Desmond is some elderly recluse in her 70s, but in actually, the character is only 50! Moreover, the actress who plays her, Gloria Swanson, is herself only 50 or 51.

Now fast forward to present times and contrast that caricature of a 50-year-old woman to actresses of today such as Diane Lane, Marisa Tomei, Sandra Bullock, Mariska Hargitay, Jodi Foster, Julianne Moore, and others.

The first few times I watched Sunset Blvd., I had no idea that Norma Desmond was only supposed to be 50. Watching it today with that realization, diminishes the movie somewhat for me.

Norma Desmond is hawt.

wtf at saying Sunset Blvd hasn't aged well, couldn't be more wrong.

Way to take half a sentence out of a three paragraph post.

Also, excellent rebuttal. You must have been captain of your debate team.

if anything, sunset blvd probably more relevant today than back in the 50s

more reflective of our cultural milieu, and of actresses desperate to prevent themselves becoming a norma/has been

Saw The Drop based on recs in this thread (Thanks RBK) and have decided Tom Hardy is our generations best actor (sorry DiCaprio). The dude is just so damned compelling, and his role in that movie really highlights how well he can do without the use of high drama lines/characters/plot. Given that, I'm on board with the new Mad Max film for everything about this trailer, but first and foremost, Tom ****ing Hardy

There's nothing at all inherently wrong with that.

...why?
03-31-2015 , 10:01 PM
Jeez, everyone knows it goes Wings of Desire, The Big L, THEN Ivan the Terrible Part 2.
03-31-2015 , 10:06 PM
Pretty obvious that if you include any film on a partial list with a Cassavetes film, the Cassavetes always comes first.
03-31-2015 , 10:08 PM
serious films
03-31-2015 , 10:48 PM
I'm going to rank that partial list!

Wings of Desire (should be higher)
Dekalog (should be higher)
Faces
Big Lebowski
Death in Venice
Mean Streets
