For a Larry Clark film it's not as sleazy as I was expecting, from memory.
I liked KIDS a lot too, especially when I was a kid.

Whiplash

Holy ****, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack my heart was pounding so fast at the end. No film has ever done that to me before so pretty sure that makes it 1 of the best films of all time by default

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

It was fine. I know Gary Oldman is well regarded, but I think he's still underrated. Not that this was a super challenging role, but whatever the part, he seems to do it right imo.

6.6/10

Can anyone recommend anything along the lines of Se7en? Procedural detective type.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, not procedural, but pretty similarish (both made by David Fincher if you watch the American version)

The tv show True Detective.

I should be going to watch this tonight, will let you know if it has similar effects on me or whether you should maybe see your doctor.

Good recommendation, True Detective is fabulous. I would add Prisoner.

Don't forget Zodiac (also made by Fincher )
02-07-2015 , 08:39 AM
Thanks, watched and enjoyed Zodiac recently, loved TD. Not seen Prisoners but had that on the list for a while.

Not really a procedural but I recently watched The Onion Field and it was a helluva true story

Has anyone seen Two Days One Night? It's at my local artsy theater. French film with 90 metacritic

Two Days One Night is a good movie with another standout performance by Cotillard. Don't expect much plot wise, it's a performance piece. I enjoyed it but forgot it once I left the theater.

A movie this boring does not qualify for "spectacular failure" territory.
Jupiter Ascending

Stunningly terrible. It actually makes Attack of the Clones look like a good movie. At least AotC is coherent, although clumsily executed.

One critic wrote that it's hard to believe a movie with this much exposition is this confusing, but it does and it is.

It's equally befuddling how a movie over two hours long would have you scratching your head trying to understand what ANY character's motivation was, but that's also true. Characters change their minds about things that literally put BILLIONS of lives at stake, but we have no idea why they changed their mind or how this fits into their character arc, or why moments later the characters completely reverse their position AGAIN.

The Wachowskis have always had a tin ear for dialogue, but this makes it seem like The Matrix was written by Aaron Sorkin.

The romance is among cinema's worst. It ranks right up there with Attack of the Clones, though Jupiter Ascending might have stolen the top prize.

The ending is full of deus ex machina after deus ex machina. At one point, someone tells another character to basically "try harder" if he wants to rescue the heroine.

For the first ten or fifteen minutes, I thought okay, this isn't great, but it's pretty good. Except that was the high point, and the movie got worse with each passing minute, until I finally felt angry at just how bad I could see it would be by the time the credits rolled.

Do not see this. No matter how much you might enjoy a train wreck of a film, you will find nothing to enjoy in this one.

Spoiler:
That's not entirely true. Some of the action sequences are visually stunning.

I love this movie so much. Saw a screener and had to immediately rewatch the last 10 minutes once the credits rolled. Watched the whole thing again a few days later. 10/10

Birdman - 8/10

So good. Could have been great. But you can't hold something's failure to completely fulfill it's potential for greatness against it as a negative, right? That would be madness. Like somehow you'd hold something much less ambitious, say an actor in a blockbuster super hero movie, that hits the low bullseye of celebrity in higher esteem than the same actor giving up the spandex to put everything on the line to direct/star/write something on broadway so you can **** on it just because maybe it's taking up stage time in that theater from something else you'd probably **** on.

That sounds crazy.

The One I Love - 8/10

It happens to everybody. At first your relationship was crazy, you did wild things together, every story was new and interesting and every day provided an opportunity to be each other's muse. Years later you both find yourself comfortable enough around each other to occasionally be an *******, a prude, and not laugh politely when hearing that same misremembered college story for the thousandth time.

You misinterpret boredom with falling out of love.

Gotta get back that spark. That energy. You pretend to be that person from long ago and it feels fake. To everybody. And not only because you are faking it now, but because you were faking it then. At the beginning of a relationship everybody puts on the mask of their best self. It's you, but 20% better. Because you know all those compliments and beachy hair and tic tac toe games might lead to getting your hand in their pants. Or better yet, their hand down your pants.

But it was always a means to an end. Nobody can be their 20% better self all the time. And somewhere deep in our lizard brain we are programmed to be creeped out watching somebody put on an act to get a thing they want from us. Back when we were falling in love we just didn't know the game. Or we were blinded enough to not care.

That's why attempts to "rekindle that spark" are always wet sparklers. You are two people pretending to be other younger versions of those same people in order to put on the halloween costume like your relationship is fresh again. Febreeze can't cover up how much it reeks of bull****. You have a job you stress about constantly and she stresses over that lasagna belly earned by ****ting out two kids. Those idealized dolts who met playing ******* while Dave Matthews played loudly at a frat party and wow'ed each other on dates by ordering Merlot are dead. They were idiots who were mercifully put down.

Growth means that a sapling will someday become a mighty redwood. And a redwood who wants to pretend it has become a sapling again is a ****tard.

You can still put in the effort to be that 20% better person more often. But it's even better now, because you don't need to be that creep with an alterior motive. You've tapped it before and you will tap it again. Now you're free to be a cool/nice/interesting guy because you want to. Because she likes it. Because it's the right ****ing thing to do. Not because you are trying to trick her but because it makes the woman you love happy for a brief moment among all the other brief moments that make up her life.

And who knows. Maybe she'll cook you bacon again.

The Raid - 7/10

Have you ever been sitting around and suddenly remembered that hallway fight scene in Oldboy, not the Spike Lee abortion but the real one, with the hammer and ****, and think to yourself "wow, you know what'd be great would be a movie where the ENTIRE THING is like this scene?"

Have I got a movie for you.
02-08-2015 , 10:39 AM
I did enjoy Whiplash. It didn't have that same effect on me but it is worth a watch for sure. I guess its maybe because I'm not really in to that kind of music.

Not a fan of Miles Teller at all although it is pretty cool he actually played the drums for the movie.

JK Simmons was truly amazing!

The One I Love, the barcalounger review 8/10

I'm not particularly interested in seeing the movie, but that was an interesting little piece. Good job.

Thought Whiplash was great. Can't remember a film where I was so aware of how sweaty my palms were while watching it, lol. Simmons is awesome.

One thing:

Spoiler:
I don't really get why Fletcher lied about how Sean Casey died (he said he died in a car accident). If he knew it may have been his abusive methods that drove Casey to commit suicide, I guess he's only just trying to save face in front of his class by bringing it up, and to fake his success with students.

I guess there is a chance you don't enjoy the movie, but it really is a fun experience.

Loved whiplash but you gotta throw reality out the window when watching it

I loved The One I Love

Whiplash & The One I Love were both awesome.

Just got a copy of "The Voices" with Ryan Reynolds. Looks very interesting and I have heard good things. Probably going to watch this week.

I've been married for 16 years, we've been together for 20. Your write-up was enough marriage counseling for now.
