Detropia - Streaming on Netflix, this is a documentary about the decline and decay of Detroit. It is told through the voices of a Detroiters, with the focus on a few: one a blogger, one a President of the UAW, one a retired teacher turned blues club owner. It just seems completely insane how it all could have fallen apart like it did, even if it was just a one industry town. The documentary mentioned about how Detroit has negative population growth and they're tearing down a lot of the abandoned buildings in order to build some urban gardens because basically the city is now 1/4 empty. This isn't a documentary that lays out the reasons for the city's decline in a precise way. What it is a documentary chronicling the decline of Detroit as seen and discussed by the people who've lived through it. I recommend it.

Saw it in 3D. Very entertaining. Very predictable. Not very good. Very entertaining.

Michelle Williams is a better actor than everyone else combined.
Very predictable...not all that entertaining...and while your Michelle Williams comment is generally on point, her performance in this was pretty dainty and not all that good.

Dainty, but still better than everyone else by volumes.

How else would one play Glinda The Good Witch anyway?

I saw Wicked last year and that actress nailed it. She was hilariously tongue-in-cheek without being cheesy. I guess that was one of my biggest problems with the film; it was too hokey. And sure, it was probably supposed to be but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Also, I saw it in 2D and I thought the film looked terrible. The Croods is better than Oz in every way imaginable.

Har har, Rushmore told an obvious lie. But this? Well played. Well played.
I quite simply do not feel the subject matter warrants an entire film, at least not in the absence of some serious filmmaking brilliance.

So...I ain't, uh...playin'.

Carriers

A global pandemic has is killed the majority of the population and has lead to the collapse of society. Two brothers and their girl friends journey to their childhood holiday home to wait it out.

I'm a sucker for a good post apocalypse story but this isn't one it starts off well but even at under an hour and a half I was losing interest towards the end.
It plays out as a series of encounters and conversations that all seemed too familiar and the character development is predictable.

Incredible Burt Wonderstone worth a watch?

I watched Les Miserables last night. After the movie I watched Susan Boyle on BGT. It made the movie a little better.

Of course I'm trolling you.

But Margin Call is an excellent film.

Flight (2012): thought Denzel was pretty great, film on the whole was good but not great. Watched the movie with my dad (who was a commercial airline pilot his entire life) and he tore into the movie pretty harsh, which was hilarious.

Last of the Mohicans (1992): been years since I've seen it, glad I took the time to rewatch it. Mann is my favourite director. Hawkeye (DDL) is a fantastic hero, hard to not love the character. Also contains one of my favourite recurring theme songs.

Cube (1997): neat movie, watched it on the recommendation of the thread. Wish there were flashbacks or some sort of element of backstory. Feel like the Saw series drew from this bigtime. Didn't like the ending, there was no payoff for me.

Wait, are you telling me a movie like Flight isn't realistic? Shut the front door!

Flight... First 20 minutes are excruciatingly intense ...phew. Denzel great as usual

Last of Mohicans... Gets better the more you watch it.

I feel like most horror movies these days leave me disappointed but Sinister was creepy and suspenseful throughout. I didn't care for the ending but you can't ask for too much from horror films these days. Definitely worth a watch if the trailer interested you.

Both of these are so amazing.
Couldn't believe how good birdman was after the first viewing. 4 or 5 since and it still holds up as my favourite of all time. Everything about it is perfect.

And Papillon, this movie will make you be so grateful. Good to see McQueen in a role so brutal.

Why does it seem like horrors are so far behind other genres over the last decade or so?
04-03-2013 , 06:37 AM
Holy Motors now streaming on Netflix, and Margin Call is very good.

That synopsis sounds almost exactly like no country for old men.
04-03-2013 , 08:57 AM
In that someone finds money and suffers consequences, but then it also sounds a lot like Sam Raimi's adaptation of Scott Smith's A Simple Plan. It's a classic setup.

Besides, no movie can be too much like No Country for Old Men
04-03-2013 , 09:06 AM
Haha definitely agree no movie can be too much like ncfom. Just the shooting a deer finding the money then cat and mouse with backwater criminals is really similar. Im sure the movie will b edifferent but that synopsis is almost the exact same.
