Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3 Movies: Talk About What You've Seen Lately--Part 3

I really disliked Her
05-23-2018 , 04:13 PM
Her struck me as high-concept harmless fluff, I didn't mind it.
05-23-2018 , 04:34 PM
It always interests me when there are such divisive opinions on a movie between some of the thread’s heavy hitters (consistent posters who know way more about movies than I do)

Definitely adding Her to the must watch list

Count me in the Her is one of the best movies of the last decade camp.
05-23-2018 , 08:33 PM
Yep, Her was amazing.
05-23-2018 , 08:38 PM
Her was pretty good. I liked it when I saw it, but really have no desire to see it again. I think it's the 3rd best "fall in love with a robot or computer program girl" of the last several years.

Ex Machina was the only better sci fi film I've seen than Her recently. I thought that Blade Runner blatantly ripped off Her's storyline.

Top two?

(Blade Runner 2049 I guess could qualify, but it's not the main plot.)

Yeah, and maybe it's not so much that a character fell in love with a robot or computer program as I did, which is central to BR 2049. Her might be better than 2049 though imo. The other one I was thinking of was Ex Machina, which I think is really one of the top movies of the last decade or so.

Hmm, Ex Machina is one of those movies I've been meaning to watch for a few years. Guess I'll have to make a point of it.

Watched the original Insomnia. I think I prefer it to the Nolan remake. The opening sequence is particularly striking.

I saw Cloverfield, that movie about New York City getting destroyed by a monster. It came out in 2008.

I'm a sucker for good horror films, and I'd say this one hit all the right notes. It's strange to see a movie that tells you the ending at the start, but I still somehow held out hope.

Maybe I'm a simpleton that's easy to impress, but I totally enjoyed it.

Try watching it again. I had the same experience. I loved it when I saw it, but then I didn't care to watch it again. But then I finally watched it again.

Survivors Guide To prison https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4323370/

Infuriating, shocking and terrifying look at the appalling criminal justice system in
the USA and how easy it is for anyone, guilty or innocent, to be put behind bars
and spend time in one of the most brutal prison systems in the world.
For those of you who say, 'if you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear', you
need to watch and learn.

I want to see that new Paul Schrader movie First Reformed where Ethan Hawke plays the priest.

cloverfield was so awesome at the time. there's a cool/dumb little easter egg in the very last scene of the movie (the coney island stuff), where you can see a splash on the horizon.

What is the splash supposed to represent?
05-24-2018 , 08:46 PM
The found footage clip at the end is dated like a day or two before the events of the movie. Splash is supposed to signify the monsters arrival.

It might be a good idea to watch Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest, which has always informed Schrader's work, among other Bresson films. I really like Light Sleeper, another of Schrader's films influenced by Bresson, this time by Pickpocket.

I looked up Rotten Tomatoes and it looked like it wasn't well-liked. I also recall a huge thread here in the Lounge about it.

Are the sequels any good?

10 cloverfield lane is a brilliant movie. it's an original, unrelated script that has absolutely nothing to do with cloverfield, and was shoehorned into the universe at the last second to add nothing other than ticket sales.

the cloverfield paradox on netflix is by all accounts diabolical.

Solo was bad
05-25-2018 , 12:39 AM
I usually like the same movies you guys do, but not so much "Her". It would have been better as an old half-hour b/w Twilight Zone episode. In fact there was a robot-human storyline in that series, i think.

Thought Solo was good on the good/bad binary scale
05-25-2018 , 11:46 AM
Watched Solo, and thought it was pretty bad. Felt like it relied a bit too much on nostalgia...
