RBK! It's great to hear from you!

The Jungle Book https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3040964/

I had my young nephew over so we sat down to watch this
and I swear I enjoyed it more than he did.
This is by far the best version of the Jungle Book story I have seen.
It's an absolute blast.
Star-studded cast that includes Bill Murray, Idris Alba and Christopher Walken,
who sings 'I wanna be like you-o-o' as only Christopher Walken can.

If you have kids, get this movie.

The late Bob Hoskins was terrific in The Long Good Friday.

3-way tie with Godfather Pt.2 and Public Enemy for Most Wrenching Final Shot of a gangster movie, but for acting moment, it’s Hoskins all the way. Just phenomenal.

Also, sets and costumes are top notch. Film does a great job of immersing you in the world of Wakanda with relatively little overt exposition.
I'm not much into superhero movies, in fact, I'd never even heard of Black Panther until this movie came out, so it took me six weeks or so to finally getting around to seeing it. And frankly, the only reason I did so was because I heard it has made over a billion dollars to date, so I thought I should see what all the excitement was about. And boy, am I glad I did. I agree with everything written by The Dark Knight & Cranberry Tea. Suffice it to say that I thought the film was fantastic, and I especially liked the fact that the villain wasn't the usual evil mad genius or god-like superhuman wanting to destroy the world. I also thought it was cute that a line of dialogue in the movie made no sense until you watched the second of the two end credit scenes at the very end of the credits.

Well done, Marvel.

I really enjoyed Meru. Here's my post on it:

Also thanks Croshow for this post:

(The Sound of Silence is the documentary which made me ask him what other ones he enjoyed btw)

Meru:

Enthralling. I have pretty much no interest in the subject, I struggled to make it through Everest and quite frankly I just don't "get" mountain climbing, but I was hooked for the entire film. The landscapes are beautiful, and the movie really benefited from the the climber who is also very artistic/good with a camera. Several days after watching it I was thinking about the movie and have some really conflicted views on the people it focuses on. They seem so reckless and despite many examples given during the film about how dangerous the climbs are, they still throw themselves into the danger despite having families. At the same time I had to respect their determination and overall sense of yolo, plus they are just genuinely nice guys and I was rooting for them. The film is also absolutely gorgeous Best documentary I've seen in awhile.

Listen to Me Marlon:

Also a fantastic documentary. Compared to the other documentaries focusing on one person that I watched, this was the most interesting. Probably due to my knowing nothing about the man except for his best movies. He's a very complex character and also has so much stuff detailing his life. Between the movies, and the thousands of hours of tapes he made during his life the movie really captures every aspect Marlon Brando. Incredibly interesting.

1$... 1$ is what I paid for the cinema in Peru (2$ on the weekends and this is not in Lima) Obviously, the image left to be desired...

Ready Player One was a fun ride and just the perfect CGI movie for my mediocre Spanish

I could not get into Ready Player One at all. It as totally predictable, the plot and writing was awful and only tried to bank on 80s nostalgia; however I'm not at all nostalgic for the 80s plus it seems like I've been bombarded with it lately.

Felt like the bad guy of the film wrote the movie yet we're all rooting against him for whatever reason. The movie exploits the worst parts of nostalgia and glorifies all the negative aspects.

Huh, he's not godlike but he's wanting to "destroy the world" for sure. He's the same as Hydra in Winter soldier. Black Hitler, basically.

This line from Black Panther gets no mention in the press at all:

W'Kabi: You let the refugees in, you let in all their problems.
It's as if that line were never spoken.

RBK glad to see you back in here. Funny how I had posted after your accident saying how I always seemed to agree with you about movies, and then you come and post the above and I JUST posted that I loved Meru in the netflix thread. The very end made me surpisingly emotional for some reason...couldn’t really put my finger on why, but I think it could have been that I really FELT how arduous of a journey it was, and it so well documented, that I felt the emotion coming off them at the end.

Glad again to have you back here. Can’t imagine what you are going through but I’m just so glad you’re alive.

Edit: I saw above someone quoted thecroshow- does he still post? He was one of the good regs in here iirc (i do not consider myself a good one fwiw)....

The Disaster Artist was funny but nothing that great. Franco did a really good Wiseau though.

Mind Game (2004, anime, in re-release now) - I'd actually thought this was new, so some of my criticism can now be downplayed. It's a "mind****" movie (it's basically telling you this) using lots of different animation styles, but it still has a somewhat linear and understandable story for most of it that makes it watchable.

Misogyny and creepiness is unforgivably bad, including "hot" sexual assault and your typical loser nerd "hero" who has no redeeming qualities at all and is a massive creep, but whom you're meant to root for to "get the girl". (He does tell a story that she finds humorous at one point, but that's it.) However, as stated earlier, this isn't quite as bad as I thought since it was "a different time".

Same deal for the "mind ****" aspects - they're somewhat familiar to us at this point, but in 2004 it's different. The theater still gasped and laughed at the appropriate "mind ****" moments like they were supposed to (I of course did not).

Worth watching for Phat Mack, doesn't seem like many of the rest of you care much for animation. My thumb is down.

i won't depress everyone and ruin the thread by describing what ive gone thru, and continue to go thru, but it has been an excellent weight loss program.

Ah, good. I didn't like that the line wasn't immediately refuted and will watch the credit scene when it gets to cable.
