Clovis,

I know you like those movies, but, please, have some objectivity man. (To which Clovis replies, "Why should I").

I think a legitimate case can be made that the Before films are more about human nature than any Malick film. In fact, while I like Malick, I've often found his films sterile and more about nature as some kind of philosophical and romantized ideal than about humanity. He is a modern Wordsworth more interested in erasing humanities distinction. The anti-Herzog.

Your face is the anti-Herzog.

I always thought Herzog had a much more interesting face than Malick.

Beautifully shot with zero substance. Typical Malick, I guess.

I thought it was a little too long but it was really cool like I said, id def watch it again.

Dave Grohl recording a song with Paul McCartney.. Dave- "why can't it always be this easy?" Paul- "It is." lollll

Watched it tonight. It was great, I coulda used more of Trent Reznor talking about how using the new technology doesn't necessarily go against the old stuff.

Rock of Ages

Uh...

I thought this was supposed to be some kind of funny, ironic meta-musical of the 80s music scene.

But they played it straight. It was like watching a musical actually FROM the 80s. It makes Footloose look revolutionary and dangerous.

I have no idea what to make of it. It makes rock and roll look like a Disney ride. Mama Mia rocked harder.

Absolutely bizarre. I'm perplexed.

EDIT: Oh, wait...Adam Shankman directed it. That hack who made Hairspray, Cheaper By the Dozen 2, and the TV series Glee.

Now it makes sense. It's not supposed to be meta - like The Brady Bunch movies - it's just supposed to be...awful. Mission accomplished.

A Streetcar Named Desire Watched the 1951 version for the first time. This was oldest film I've seen Marlon Brando in, so was interesting to watch him as a young badass. The story is obviously amazing, but I was pretty shocked at how many racy things happen in this film for being made in 1951. It's also impressive that a movie can have so little scenery and still be incredibly entertaining the whole time.

Rashomon Always been one of my favorite of Kurosawa. Incredibly moving, and deals with issues way ahead of its time. Absolutely amazing throughout, never a dull moment with twists and turn that develop each character perfectly.

Django Unchained Loved the movie for the most part. Every scene was pretty amazing. I don't know how it's almost 3 hours long and there's not a wasted scene, but somehow there is. As it's still new I'll post my complaints in a spoiler, although I assume many of these complaints have already been made.
Spoiler:
Chrisoph Waltz getting the best support actor is a bit of a joke as he's clearly the leading actor in this movie. The vast majority of this film is Christoph with a few scenes for Django, and then an added half hour of Django going on a killing spree despite it making no sense.

When Schultz kills Candie and is in turn killed himself the movie pretty much dies with them. The best ending would have been for Django to grab the girl, go on a quick killing spree as he escapes and gets out, however I imagine people wwould have gone insane that Tarantino used slavery to make a great film about white people so this added bs with Django is required so Tarantino can claim the film is about Django. His entire escape is awful. No one can think of anything bad enough to do to Django (after all the sick stuff we've already seen...) so he is given to slavers. He then talks the slavers into giving him a gun... right.

On top of that, the main villain is already dead. The three people remaining for Django to kill are an old black slave who can't walk without a cane, a seemingly stupid woman who seems pretty nice except for the fact she was the villain's sister, and some guy who had about a minute of screen time. It's just not a very good ending imo, and doesn't do anything close to living up to the rest of the movie.

Hands on a Hard Body This is a documentary about an endurance contest where the contestants have to place their hand on a truck and the last one to remove their hand wins the truck. It takes place in a small city in Texas, in 1995 before these contests were made illegal. The contest itself lasts 77 hours, and is pretty interesting. The contest attracts some pretty interesting people (hicks) and listening to them is very funny. It's a good look at middle America and a fun film, although it can be slow at times as it's about people standing around a truck for 77 hours.

Streetcar is amazing, as is Rashomon. Good points on Django...you articulated what bothered me about it.

Strangely, Tom Cruise is actually pretty great in Rock of Ages.

But it's still an amazingly bad movie.

Amour - this movie is so still and quiet with a lot of long shots and a limited number of close-ups. You would think this wouldn't be engaging or effective and yet for me, it was. Everyone pretty much knows what's going to happen, yet can't look away because some part of you hopes that it won't. I don't know if I would call it sad exactly, but much more than bittersweet. Melancholy maybe?

One question:
Spoiler:
What do people make of the fact that he fired that second nurse? I wasn't quite sure what he was talking about when he said that he this nurse had abused his wife. Did I miss something? Or was it just a convenient excuse for him to get rid of the nurse?

Emmanuelle Riva was robbed for Best Actress Oscar. Jennifer Lawrence's performance looks like a child playing with toy blocks next to Riva's.

It's one of my alltime favorite movies, maybe #1. Def Malick's best.

If the movie was about my penis, the title would be:

Spoiler:
8 1/2

Duh.

Lol...I love movie titles based on my face! Or penis. Whichever.

Searching for Sugar Man *head explode* this is one of the craziest stories I've ever heard. Only minor gripe is in retrospect would've liked to hear more about Rodriguez than the dude searching for him. But yea, how is this something that actually happened? Imagine that unbeknownst to you, you were a mega celebrity on the other side of the world and that's what this is. 9/10
