Good discussion about the movie if you're interested, they discuss doping and several countries throughout. Sounds like Russia is #1, China is very high, USA is pretty close to the lowest. At one point they talk about how if you look at USA's medals in lifting they look like they are one of the worst major countries, but really they are probably the best at the actual lifts they just dope the least.

Plus, I think that a major distinction is that even if the US was caught in a major doping scandal, it wouldn't start killing people to hide it.

True 7 months ago, less so now.

I will say the subject matter is tough to watch.

I sort of thought it was heading in one direction, but it ended up being a very complex exploration of the situation as well as the aftermath, and the effects on everyone involved.

Extremely well done. I highly recommend.
Based on a very good book. Highly recommended.

The audiobook is read by a child for the main character, with other voices when adults are speaking. It's fantastic.

This is a documentary about Robert Ebert's life that also chronicles his death. This is a beautiful movie and the title is apt because this is about much more than Ebert and what he meant to the movies. It is a story of a life well lived and the harsh realities that come at the end.

I am biased because Ebert has always been an important person to me. Simply put, he gets it. In high school, I would often stay up late to watch At the Movies with Siskel because they had so much to say and so much of it made sense to me. Even the way they would disagree with each other would often give way to insight about the movie or maybe life in general.

I've always gravitated towards movies because they helped me understand myself and the world around me. When I was too young to separate the wheat from the chaff I let Ebert be my guide and I can't think of a better person for the job.

This is a difficult movie to watch at parts - it's tough saying goodbye to someone you care about, but this movie is a perfect farewell.
I found it on Netflix, and I agree with this review. Some was difficult to watch... and I'm sure you know what parts I'm talking about.

It's a very well-paced documentary. While they left some parts out, I think that, on reflection, those were good decisions. I'll certainly suggest it to film fans.

Logan Lucky got a really good review on a radio show I was just listening to. (Film Week - KPCC) (actually I didn't catch the whole thing, and didn't want spoilers anyway, but it started out glowing)

Icarus was outstanding. I doubt there is much state involvement in USA #1 doping, but my assumption is that doping is rampant in all sports worldwide.

Kenya, Ethiopia, Jamiaca, Turkey, Morrocco off the top of my head some of the worst. Countries with lax out of competition testing with big financial upsides

The Manchurian Candidate on TCM tonight! Starring the great Laurence Harvey and some Italian singer from Jersey. Decades ahead of its time.

I would say Communist countries and countries where Olympic medals is all they have going for them.

All this talk got me watching Icarus as well. What a surprising little treat that is. Straight up twisted from beginning to end.

Spoiler:
It was a little eye-opening to see how the russian doctor was reading 1984 like it was the Bible. Very nice arch of how they used that book in relation to all the changes.

i'm not a sucker for caper flicks and thought it was enjoyable, but much preferred baby driver for example. i instantly broke into tears streaming down my face laughing during one scene, but on the whole was expecting it to be much funnier.

IDK, I don't feel like he's tired at all. I think the bigger problem is the entire arc of the movies led to and then was wrapped up in Spectre. I'm curious to see how they continue but don't have the highest of hopes.

I saw it tonight- I agree I thought it would be funnier but at the same time I left the theater with nothing but positive thoughts. Very enjoyable movie with a bunch of great performances.

When I saw this post last night I decided to record it. It had been probably at least 35 years since I last saw it. Watched this afternoon and enjoyed it except ... except Laurence Harvey was horribly miscast. I could never get past his English accent or his stiff performance. Frank and Landsbury were exceptional though. A better casting choice for Harvey's character would have made this outstanding.

Guess I am in the minority. I thought Lucky Logan was horrendous. I didn't laugh once. It was painful.

I can't remember a bigger disconnect I've had with critics. The Rotten Tomatoes 93% is beyond comprehension.

Glad you liked it. I'm curious about what seemed left out to you? Was it not filming him when he got really sick or were there storylines during his life that they glossed over?

I also watched Icarus last night and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Just the expressions from the two women, during the investigation/discovery meeting, was priceless. Fogel is just explaining the breakdown of how it was done and they looked so defeated.

Thank you for the heads up. I may not post here in this forum often but I am following it and have seen MANY great films due to all of your suggestions.

Crazy Chick: check.

Batman: check.

Cat Woman: check.

"Food, drugs and Joan Didion": check.

"Tupac said there would be days like this": check.

Can you make a movie out of Instagram: no.

I have no idea what possessed me to go see this movie. Bad drugs? No, I can't blame everything I do on bad drugs. It's time I took responsibility for my own actions...

They didn't mention Richard Roeper, for example.

The way they presented the end-of-life was very well-done. Maybe others disagree.
