Probably write my review on Dunkirk tomorrow but I am shocked to be siding with Clovis more than with the critics.

I was really expecting to love it too. Was super excited to see it, especially on 70mm. Was super bummed to hate it.

Saw a classic, of sorts: Cinema Paradiso. Created in 1998 and winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

I feel inclined to write a long form review of this piece. It's a pure and simple drama that hits the correct pacing, all the correct notes, and unlike so many movies we are used to seeing.... well, see it yourself, it's a neat little package.

Definitely worth the award in nearly any year for that category (or standard Best Picture, to be honest).

Eh, maybe a true filmy can do this better justice than I.

Year needs to be changed, but yeah almost every true cinephile appreciates this. If you're just discovering it, I would also highly recommend seeking out My Life as a Dog.

So here's how I felt about Dunkirk, it's maybe my scrappiest review in a while, but it kind of reflects how the movie made me feel.

Dunkirk 2017

Not entirely sure of my feelings on this one because there's things in it I didn't like - the character underdevelopment made it tricky to distinguish between similar looking bedraggled soldiers for example, but it was, at heart, pure cinema - getting by on the most minimal of dialogue and cross-cutting different vignettes to make a tapestry of a story. The music and editing made it very tense and nerve-wracking for me, and I think that's what Nolan was going for. I even liked the ending that bordered on cliche (well, bordered is a bit weak, but it was hovering close).

I liked it and was engaged, but some of the stories left me empty, and I feel the emotional impact was much served by the music instead of any characterisation.

Worth seeing at the cinema.

4/5

Paterson

90 Metacritic score? HOW THE ****???? Nothing happened. There was no plot. No conflict. Aggressively boring. Would rather watch Manchester by the Sea two and a half more times than watch Paterson again.

I had plans to see The Big Sick on Monday but couldn't get my wife to commit to it. I suspect this week is my last chance to see it in theaters, so it might be a while.

There has been some decent counterpoints to our main criticism, i.e. that it's a film about a situation, not about individuals. But I can't pretend like I care about the outcome of something when I don't.

I rewatched all three last year and came away thinking:

1 is the GOAT sci-fi movie
2 is completely pointless, should've cut all the BS and extended 1 or 3 by 20 minutes
3 was better than I remembered, solid 7/10 ish

went to see dunkirk with 3 friends, they all hated it, i thought it was sorta ok, but the music made it almost unwatchable

Paterson was pretty good. Poetry happened.

Saw Dunkirk tonight...I really don't get the hype, very empty movie.

Probably my least favorite of his.

Yep the original Matrix is amazing.

The sequels are abortions I've disavowed from existence. Perfect example of trying to manufacture a franchise out of a single stand alone movie that was never intended to be a franchise.

That's the story of most movie sequels though, which is why most sequels are so bad.
